With regard to LR reliability, I have owned five, four discoveries and one Freelander. Apart from routine maintenance the only bill I have had was for £270 for an AC leak on a 5 year discovery. I can not complain.

@@graememckay9972 They made the engine and transmission more reliable but at the same time overcomplicated all the other bits and pieces and made those bits and pieces less reliable and harder to fix than the Disco 3, such as the failing and poorly designed oil level sensors.

As a previous owner of a 2014 Disco 4 SDV6 from new, I was really unconvinced when this new model was released. But it’s really grown on me and your assessment is absolutely spot on. It now genuinely out rivals the large German luxury SUV’s and offers Range Rover level quality & refinement. For the same price as the base European rivals, basically everything is included even on the SE model. And it has proper off road capability that the others simply don’t offer. So a far better proposition in my view. If off roading isn’t a priority then the new Volvo XC90 is also a cooler and financially smart alternative to the German rivals.

i like the offset license plate and i wish more brands would dare to do something different, even if it is just a small thing like the plates position - nowadays cars kinda look the same mostly anyway so it is good to have these unicorns on the road. i think the look of the discovery has drastically changed to the better. it looks stunning in my opinion and you could easily transform it into a gangster car if you so desire: dark grey or black paint, black wheels and you are officially a mafioso :D

Very enjoyable review as usual. I just can’t take to the design of the car though. I like it inside although it strikes me as being very dark but all the rounded edges loses my desire for it and the dramatic curve in the ‘c pillar’ is way too much for me. I’ve owned Range Rovers for over 30 years and have had Discovery’s outside my front door for over 20 years (of many different configurations) but think that when I change my current Discovery, I’ll probably invest in a Defender, I prefer the look of it personally.

greatly I'd say. Disco numbers have tumbled since the (2020) Defender line was released. In fact I've heard since some of the parts are shared between the two, Defender's get priority as they are simply in higher demand.
(I have a '22 Discovery 5 and happy not to have the "cargo space challenged" Defender 110 with that annoying swing-gate which I considered ;))
good to hear that JLR recently announced the Disco will continue in some form, there is a market for it.

Had ours since 2020 - we absolutely love it. We tour with our caravan and it might just be the perfect towing car. With 3 kids and a dog, we never feel short on space, even on a 3 week caravan trip. Personally I find it a joy to drive, even towing a near 8 meter caravan. I also like the look of it, we have the HSE luxury with black pack, and 22" black matt alloys and I think t looks the biz, I admit the vanilla low spec models do look a bit dull.

As a Disco 5 owner, this is a fair review. It’s a bit ugly at the back but apart from that it’s comfy, capable and straight-line quick. Corners not so much, it’s much better driven wafty. Oh and completely reliable in two-plus years of ownership.

I had a mark 1 disco, with 3 doors. I thoroughly enjoyed it and it proved to be a excellent family wagon, when the kids were little. We had great fun camping and towing things.
It wasn't too bad for reliability either and fairly cheap to fix. Rust was the biggest issue in the end.
These newer ones are not going to make good cheap runners though, in a few years. Too complex.

I have had a succession of large 4x4s as my wife is disabled and have to carry a disabled buggy , dog cage and lots of luggage as we always holiday in the UK. I don't need 7 seats. I started with two Isuzu Troupers ( Superb quality and one light bulb change) , Merc ML (badly designed and not good quality) Audi Q7 (old model , great car but eat tyres) then a Disco4 which was faultless , not an issue at all and good for the tyres. New Discovery had come out so did I buy one? No, I drove it and felt the driving experience in my 4 year old Disco 4 with 60k on the clock was better . The new car looked like a jelly mould that was top heavy and the boot was not as good as the Disco4. It had shrunk. So I went back to the new model Q7 with the uprated engine. As a drivers car and quality simply superb and no issues at all. The tyre issue had been sorted on the new car. I am due to change and really liked the look of the Defender as this looked like a proper replacement for the Disco4 to find its boot is far too small for me. Oh I also had tested the Range Rover and RR Sport and the boots were too small. So I may have to go to a Volvo XC90 to have something different or hope the LWB version of the Defender may have sorted my boot size issue. So sorry your review may love the latest Disco but its not for me for practical reasons and its looks.

Love the interior on these, but don't like the heaviness of the styling from the D pillar back. Interesting that you mention not to look at this as a Discovery, as I think that's why they have sold less of these than its predecessor. People don't see it as a Disco anymore. I think that slot is now taken by the Discovery Sport which is also a seven seater albeit an occasional one.

My first disco was 1994, another in 1998, 2003 and 2006, loved them until 2006 model. You are right it was a far nicer car to drive, more refined, but it was just to far from a rough tough car I need. I moved down to defenders then, bought two new in 2010 and another two in 2016, my last of them as well, great cars even if the hand brake dug into your leg. But unfortunately Land Rover has moved right away from what I require, you see old Land Rover were for every day bush work, you and Land Rover talk about real off road ability, but you are talking about driving off road as a one off for a bit of fun. When you live and work in rough country, your car does far more dirt road with corrugated miles than bituminised tarmac, Land Rover no longer builds anything for that. I have now bought an Isuzu d-max and mix, not as good as my old rovers, but at least basic with no electronic wizardry for the dust to infiltrate and go hay wire, plastic bits to fall off underneath. As to Land Rover reliability I always found most people who talked about it never owned a new Land Rover, they had bought a 10 year old one with 250,000 kms on it and had no end of trouble with it, then when they bought their new Toyota it was much more reliable. Sad for not been able to buy Land Rover cars now, I loved them, don’t blame Land Rover really, we who actually need a bush car are a niche market I know, the 4wd poser market if far larger and more lucrative, I just wish with defender they could have stayed true to the brand and kept at least one rough tough truck for us to buy.

Frankly relieved by the comments and the video having just traded in my 2016 100k disco 4 landmark plus £38k for a 2021 Disco 5 R Dynamique with just 10k (yep!) on the clock. I really don't like the exterior styling, the 4 still is the best shape in my view and I found the offset rear plate hateful but, I can't see them from the luxury driving position and when you need or want 7 adult seats, I've not seen anything come near it.

The mk 3 and 4 have an ageless , iconic design that the mk 5 doesn’t. Not helped by the discovery sport , which came out first , has exactly the same design, just shrunk in the wash ! Very smart though and rubs shoulders with the Range Rover, indeed . Tempted ?! 😂👍

The new landrovers/Rangerovers are stylish cars, but the elephant in the room is reliability. This company needs to follow in the footsteps of Lexus and build into their vehicles reliability and good customer service. With the high cost of these vehicles, surely customers deserve the aforementioned.

Im upgrading my Discovery sport to a Disco 5 turbo diesel, used of course. Never had major issues with my discovery sport since I got it new, only thing was a turbo assembly replacement after 100k km. With this one it has more bells and whistles to go wrong and it will be a average milage used. But I plan to get a certified used from LR lot and extend the warranty. I get worried about reliability but Im confident it wont be extremely expensive to maintain like a Range Rover. I do take these cars offroad for camping with the family and sometimes tow rental trailers in Canada, so this car fits the bill.

Looks very nice, but if I were buying one I would go for the Petrol version, either the Si6 or P250. Those SDV6 engines like to snap cracks randomly, just like in the Disco 4's. Also you can buy a conversion kit to centre the rear number plate, deffo a must buy !

  • @martinrandall5836

I work for a JLR dealership. I have to fill out the warranty paperwork and return the parts on a daily basis, and I don’t mean bits and pieces, but 4, 5, 6, roller cages a day.
Nice cars to drive when they work but I wouldn’t buy one. I don’t drive off road and many Land Rover owners don’t. I own and daily drive a Lexus RX450h. Nice comfy car to drive, outdated tech but it works, ugly to look at but it is totally reliable, driving in town traffic I get great mpg because it’s a hybrid but motorway miles it’s not so good, which is the case for most “self charging hybrids”.
If I wanted a big comfy off roader it would not be a Range Rover but, a Toyota Land Cruiser, a bland, reliable, capable vehicle.
And you can now gat a LWB 7 seat RX450h, not that I need one.
It comes down to do you want a reliable car that you can get in and drive, or a badge that 80% of owners are on first name terms with the warranty manager, hi ya.

Another great review. True the D5 isn't to everyone's taste, I've spoken to a few people who own one & they're all impressed with it as a vehicle. One guy tows a lot & says its streets ahead of the D4 he had (given the D4's track record on towing, that's some claim). I'd avoid the 2.0 diesel though. Personally I think the vehicle is just too big for a 2litre diesel engine. My mate has one & it's just dumped it's engine oil all over the road at 3 1/2 yrs old with 40k on the clock. The dealership is confident JLR will help as there's a known issue with the 2litre Ingenium engine.

  • @jagman84
    @jagman84 3 года назад +1

As a Brit Expat now living in the US, I can say we had the D1 and D2. And that it was called the Discovery 2 (I had one before trading it in on a L322 RR). The reason LR went for LR3 and LR4 name was to distance them from the Disco name because of piss poor reliability. I mostly refer to my LR4 as a D4. You are correct that it's called plain Discovery here too (I thought it was called the D5).

Id love a disco or RR, they are beautiful and with a great ride height, and so comfortable too but although I can afford the monthly payments, I couldn't budget for a lot of extra regular garage trips - let alone do my job if the cars in the garage either.
