Your hotbox worked fine plenty of times, and I wouldn't have suspected it right away either. I think you did just fine diagnosing and eliminating the problem. Thanks for another great video, that engine sounds great, nice job!
Thanks man, I appreciate that! I’ve never seen a tach dead short like that before. Although it’s probably 6 years old, I never would have thought to check that first. Love and learn! Have a great week 🤙
Absolutely! Can’t believe the tach developed a dead shirt like that. Oh well, I’ll get a replacement sooner or later. His painter did a great job on the tins.
Well I appreciate that greatly. Glad you’re enjoying the videos. I do have to edit out some language here and there as I forget and let them slide. Sometimes one skips though but I do my best to keep it clean.
I’ve been right there with you, who would have guessed it to be the tach, Your right sometimes you have to walk away, but it came around great, sounds awesome, love 1776s great size, run great even with a single 34, thanks for showing the stubbles, because that’s real life, 😂my life.
Yes sir, that’s how life goes! Something so simple causes so much headache. Luckily it’s up and going without any engine issues and he’ll have a great power plant for his bug.
It’s definitely an interesting one. He said it’s from the 80’s or 90’s and the company is now out of business. Engine turned out great, no leaks and runs very well. He should love this combo.
I’ve seen the tach signal wire short out before but never the tach itself. Definitely an odd problem, that’s why I left it in the video. Real life struggles, things don’t always go the way you hope for.
this is a great video. I appreciate you showing the whole process, that is so great for us still learning. Would've never guess a short in the start box was causing all the problems.
Sounds great Gary, always look forward to your videos. The walk away thing is just what you have to do sometimes, its like a brain reset from going around in a loop over and over
Thank you sir. Sometimes walking away is the best thing to do. Definitely a brain reset and helps you think and see clearly. Worth while in this situation.
@@VWJawbreaker Yes I have been in that position myself before. I wanted it done that day and I just couldn't make it happen. I end up sleeping on it and the next day I had some clear thinking and tried some new ideas and figured it out.

Hi Gary, well after some issues the engine sounds great, as you said often it`s ok walking away and clear the brains for sorting out what happened here, well you did find the solution to the failure,well-done-as👍🏻💪🏻 I say to myself think three times and then three times more before you go further. that`s always my solution to finding out what course the problem is. I`m happy on your behalf that you did get the engine running as it should be🙏🏻🤗. congratulations my friend. Looking forward to seeing the engine assembled in the engine bay and driving on the road. see you at the next vid🇺🇸.🇳🇴🇳🇱Greetings, Hubertus
Hi Hubertus! It is best to talk away but it’s difficult to when you’re determined to find the solution. Luckily everything worked out and the engine is good to go. We’ll try to get an install video down the road and showcase his sweet custom bug.
Thank you sir! His painter did a great job on the tins. Engine sounds good and seems to be good to go. I really tried not to throw things, I didn’t want to ruin that fancy paint job 😂 Hope you’re in the mend my friend.
Single ports have a reputation for being torquey which is perfect for a street driver. Interesting muffler; looks like a Monza style with 4 huge megaphones 🤣 You are right; best valve covers are stock OEM ones.
I can always expect a few hiccups, I get quite used to them. That one was real good spotting though. One Good one, was that I put the polarity of the speedo dash light wrong and couldn't figure why I was blowing fuzes when the lights were on. Finally found it when the speedo drive cable started melting. Was acting as an earth. 😂 cost one new drive cable.
WoW thats a good looking paint job, what is he putting it in ? You should take a video of the car after and go for a ride. What exhaust is that? A quad megaphone? I wonder if it would fit in a 70 bus.

Good job, then we don't know why this engine had this trouble, with so little miles ??? How do you think it has horses power ,in 1776cc ??? See you later. Kris
I get it to idle close to the rpm that I want, read one snail then match the other side. If the idle is then too high or too low, I make an adjustment on once carb and repeat the process.
Im a newbie at VW and I have a question. Will the engine go in with those outboard carbs or do you have to take them off? I have the same setup and by measuring the rear compartment it isnt wide enough to drop the body down over them.
I feel your pain man. Great call on taking a break and coming back fresh. Your persistence paid off nicely!
Thanks buddy. Luckily it all worked out well and he now has a great engine.
Nice job hanging in there and finding a solution.
It was tough but everything worked out in the end.
Great job patience and persistence
Yes sir, definitely difficult to walk away when you’re trying to resolve an issue but it all works out in the end.
tough break... Good on you for replacing the module... Honesty is rare these days
It happens to the best of us. Honestly is the best policy… no need to try to cover things up, make it right and move on.

The exhaust is something from the 80’s or 90’s, I don’t remember what he said.
Was that a Pertronix dizzy with igniter #3 Module ? I’ve been chasing a intermittent problem for a week. Ran perfect last year 😂😂
No, it’s the Pertronix 1 I believe.
How come you never get the emails I send you?
Like the exaust. Did the case need a line bore? Nice to run a broken in good cam and no worries about break in, sound nice.
I had a local shop double check the case and crank. Both did not need machining as checked out perfect.

I gave my opinion on why the other engine had issues, in that video.
This engine being a single port should be peppy and have decent power.
What airflows do you adjust your snails to ?
