I also realised that the "welling and swelling" could be interpreted as growth, either from her past or her current growth in her self confidence, which truly just adds on to the whole message of rising above all

So this is why Lewis Hamilton always says 'Still I rise' & has it all over his race gear/helmets. Great breakdown & what a poem. Cool slogan for life in general when you're down.

This poem is so amazing that it makes your heart flutter and a smile comes to your face as if she's telling you how to feel and how to accept the thing you cannot control but just rise from it. So you can be a better person.

In 21:47, I would also say that 'dream' may be a reference to Martin Luther King Jr's dream about how he wanted racism to end, and all people to be treated equally.

Brilliant as always. For me, the increase in pace generated by the change in rhyme scheme mirrors the acceleration of the rate of ascension of black society and its continued inexorable progress

Personally, I interpreted the lines that referred to wealth as allusions to colonisation. For instance, 'oil wells' may reference the oil stolen from Western countries from enslaved places and her 'walk' does not refer to wealth per se, but the confidence stolen from the oppressed by the rich, white, western man when they waltzed into peaceful nations, ready to steal oil. By reclaiming that confidence, in her walk, she is also reclaiming the natural minerals that have been extorted from poorer countries by the western man for centuries and that is why is surprises them.

Hi! Thank you so much for the video! Its been very helpful with my revision:) I personally believe that with the use of the phrases 'oil wells in my living room' and 'gold mines in my backyard' I believe this has much to do with the idea of self-worth. The idea that the oppressor doesn't want her to have any self-worth perhaps because shes black and It was stereotypical at the time that they were poor due to systematic racism and such. She's almost mocking the fact that society believes that self-worth is derived from money so shes comparing her own self-empowerment to that of someone with oil wells in their living room.

These paper 2 anthologies are a life saver. I'm so worried for my exam. Apparently Night is likely to come up in paper 2, so if you could get that up it would be incredible. Also, I'm extremely worried about paper 2 anthology being one of the long ones and I will probably feel extremely overwhelmed looking at it, do you have any tips. Last question (I promise), in paper 1 is the comparison question likely to come up and do you have any tips. Thank you so much, you really are a life saver as I'm homeschooling myself and find these videos so helpful!

      Hi Jane Doe,
I hope to finish Paper 2 texts within the next two weeks, so keep an eye on my channel for new uploads!
For Paper 1, yes, the comparison question (question 5) will most definitely come up in the exam. I plan to do a help video regarding this much later in the academic year, but my advice is to ensure you start each paragraph with a comparative statement about the two texts. The paragraph should then consist of evidence from both texts, continually comparing them.
I hope this helps for now. Keep an eye out for a video next year for this one.

How I interpreted the similes to wealth is that it is an irony. at her time, wealthy black people weren't a thing, so saying she has all of this wealth like "gold mines" challenges the oppressors' ideas of her and says that she too can be and is worthy of wealth.
