Ellen gave what was probably a top 5 acting performance in the history of cinema in requiem for a dream, and julia roberts won the oscar that year. that bothers me so damn much

I agree, but the graphic violent sexual content [with Jennifer Connelly] ruined the film for me.

What a sweet and wonderful person to talk to. She's been through a LOT in her career as an actress, and despite her hard work and efforts, she never let it get to her head, and she never used the bad experiences as a crutch in her life. She's a very strong person, yet never lost that sweet disposition about her. That is why I love Ellen Burstyn for who she is. I would totally love to meet her in person someday.

Ellen as Sara Goldfarb is by far the best acting I have ever seen. It is a fucking CRIME that she didn't get the Oscar.

Her acting in any movie I saw her made such a huge impact on me..... Requiem for a dream, Exorcist, Alice doesn't live here anymore, Interstellar, Pieces of a woman....... No matter she plays supporting or a lead role, she steals the show.

Brava Ellen! When she mentions "Resurrection" she is so true. She is a great actress overall but she is one of the best of all time in that movie and she have won Oscar.

I became a fan the first time that I saw Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore. (Sure, she preceded that with Exorcist, but Exorcist was mostly effects and some story.)
I took several married women friends to see Alice as I felt they needed to see a good movie about a woman who changed her life...pretty much without the help of a man. And I have seen that movie 5, maybe 6 times. But Resurrection...I cried through most of that movie, so powerful. And after that I started digging up all the work I could find featuring Ms Burstyn. She appeared on Perry Mason and a few other old B&W tv shows, though my favorite tv appearance was her role as Elliott Stabler's mother on Law&Order.
Definitely a terrific actress and in interviews she comes across as so....down to earth and also gracious.

@@howardkerr8174 I don’t think her work in The Exorcist should be dismissed at all. Yes it was a horror movie with a lot of effects but her performance is one of the reasons it is not “just” a horror movie with effects. As for the film itself, I wouldn’t call it a film with just “some” story. It has as much if not more going on in the story than many non-horror films, and there’s a lot more going on in the film, in terms of story and character, than meets the eye initially.

Cool thing back when Ellen Burstyn was nominated for "Requiem for a Dream" was that "The Exorcist" was back in theaters, so she could say that a movie she had a Oscar nomination for 27 years before was back in theaters, wide release and she was in a new movie that she was also nominated for.

It's true she was in 'Same Time, Next Year' on Broadway the year she won for 'Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore' (1975), but the truth is, I've always thought, that she was pissed for having not won the year before for 'The Exorcist' and she just couldn't take it losing two years in a row so she had her 'Alice' director Martin Scorsese pick up the award for her. She has, more than once, mentioned she thought Gena Rowlands in 'A Woman Under the Influence' was "an Oscar performance," which it most certainly is. She was pretty sure she wasn't gonna win. I'm glad she did.
