- So you’re starting a nonprofit and you’re the nonprofit’s founder. You’re wondering: can I serve on the board and be a staff person? How does that even work? I answered that question in this video today. I get this question A LOT so I wanted to break it all down.
But as with all my videos, I go a little deeper so you can understand the why behind everything so it makes more sense. Make sure you watch the entire video so you can fully understand.
Here’s the video breakdown:

I am on a board for NP that has been around for 17 years. Despite that time, we operate like a new start-up. Our Executive Director is one of (until recently) 5 board members, She also does the fundraising. The Board President helps her run the NP. I have been the secretary, but recently quit. We have 2 other board members who are not expected to do anything, despite the push to have a "working board". Everything I learn about NPs tells me that we do everything wrong. SMH.
Thank you for the content.. I want to start nonprofit but i don't know anyone who's interested in the same as me

I love your information on NFP I would love to have a consultation with you.

Hey Tiffany, quick question about board members and applying for the 1023, do you need to list the board members and their addresses on the form? I heard this somewhere. And also can you amend it later if you add members? I know you’ll have to disclose in the articles of incorporation/bylaws how many members etc. but I’m a little hung up on this. I’m looking to buy your board members masterclass and tips for recruiting board members because (as you said in this video) I want to set the expectations right from the beginning. 🙏🙏 hope this comment finds you doing well!! ❤❤
Hey there, I’m doing well, I hope you are too. Yes, the forms require addresses. You don’t need to amend after the first submission to the IRS- you can update board members with your state if they ask for that info.
@@BossonaBudget ok great thank you! 🙏🙏🙏💜
Thank you for your clear concise information. I am very new to all this and am wondering, can a Board Member be the Secretary and the Treasurer? And, are these roles considered staff or just Officers?
They are officers of the board and are considered board members. I hope that helps.
@@BossonaBudget Thank you, Yes it does answer the second question. I think a better way for me to ask the first question is, can one board member be both the Secretary and the Treasurer?
Thanks in advance.
@@dbrown5443 A typical board team has: Chairperson, Vice chairperson, Secretary, and treasurer. All are on the board of directors. Thanks!
I have a cousin who has a background in PR and she’s also the director for a nonprofit. I was considering asking her to serve on my board. Can you have a relative on your board?
Yes, relatives are allowed, but you should disclose any conflicts of interest when she's serving. Also check any state laws or rules on this as well - states have their own laws concerning nonprofit governance.
Here's a video that gives some insight on family and friends on the board: ruclips.net/video/p9sE2KRm1h8/видео.html
So is the staff are president and vice president?
Hi, I’m not sure I understand your question.
Can't a CEO be a member?
Yes, nonprofit use different models but it's best practice to have the CEO as a non voting member.
