You make that look easy! It's always a joy to watch your videos; thanks for all of the hard work making them.
Thank you Peter.
Great work as always. Stoked that you got to see some of your dream things.. not all of us will get that chance, congrats on the trip..
Thanks.
I was screaming at the top of my lungs don't forget the prong😂 can't believe you didn't hear me. Awesome buckle Perry and another nice casting under your belt😂 I think you do this stuff deliberately to make your videos more entertaining 😂
Here I was thinking that the noise was the mosquito flying around my room. It was you?
Man I wish I had heard you. I guess now I've got metal for my opener :-D
Ray, Sigh - I was yelling too, loudly and long, but as my wife says "they can't hear you" - pity, as if they could a lot of YTers ears would be very blue 😊… Martin
As it is most of us simply have to deal with tear-stained keyboards ;-)
Perry, Yes, crying into ones keyboard at the incorrect horrid science abusing bumf we are watching and how it gets millions of views - Sigh it just is not fair... Martin
turned out great you need a sign "Dont't Forget The Tang!" glad you had a good trip be talking soon
Brilliant idea!.. I'm gonna do that I've been looking for a project that I can do to explain some other stuff with and that'll be a sign I make. Thanks for the idea.
Nice job! It is quite the spiffy buckle.
Thanks
Those darn prongs... it looks great though! Sounds like an amazing trip by the way.
It was a great trip. Pretty go go go , but good
Sweet buckle! Your not the only one that forgets to do things 🤦🏻♂️ oops. Still turned out great 👍🏻
Thanks bud
Great video I am always glad to hear you are still ticking.
Ha!! you know as I started to film I could almost feel them. I expected they were pretty loud. I tried to move the mic over to my shoulder but I guess that didn't help
nice one Perry! lovely finish on it too.
Thanks mate
I'm yelling at the screen "the prong, you forgot the prong!" I wonder how many other people were too.
Clearly not enough 😆. Thanks for trying though
Perry, Forgot the prong - AGAIN! - Really - I thought it was only old fogies like me who did silly stuff like that! Big problem now is that Aluminium bronze does not silver solder, so you can not put a prong on - well maybe - if you mix standard silver solder flux 50:50 with caustic soda flakes it will work as a flux on aluminium bronze - sometimes - worth a try!... Martin
PS, Was there really a "United sates" before the end of the civil war?
The way things are now, I'm not sure there's a United anything anymore. I stopped watching the news and am starting to feel much better. A bit of protecting myself from those with an agenda I don't agree with and ostrich-therapy I suppose.
Yes, the closing words to the preamble of our constitution read "establish this Constitution for the United States of America."
@@swdweeb, Yep I know the feeling - we have an election this coming weekend and Oh Dear what a bloody shambles. I should stop watching and listening too and maybe I would feel better its like a slow motion train wreck! But I am in the middle of the bloody train!
But which side (north/south) claimed to be the "US"? Or did both?... Martin
@@olfoundryman8418 The north, also know as "the Union troops" kept the United States name. The south adopted the "Confederate States of America or CSA.
It’s a beautiful buckle!!! It is a shame about the prong.. But I’m sure the next one will turn out perfectly..
You need to figure out if this stuff can be brazed ;-)
swdweeb I’m 95% sure it can be soldered or mig welded.. We have an aluminum bronze Mig wire at the shop we use for repairing steel parts that are our of tolerance in the case that the customer can’t afford to machine new and I do know we can weld ok bronze with it.. I also believe we can use a bracing rod with a flux..
I bought an OLD reproduction buckle from an auction and want a copy to wear without ruining the original in my collection. I have made a silicone mold and a hard wax copy, but I plan to sand cast as you did here. Instead of lost wax casting, I'll use the wax to create the sand casting mold. I'm planning to make the plain oval buckle as was shown to you... with a small loop and knob to attach to the belt all underneath the oval buckle, if that makes sense. I have lots of experience with casting as I am a jeweler, but this will be my biggest ( metal volume) casting project to date. I really enjoyed your video and you showed the process very well. I feel alot more confident moving forward having seen this done now. I will be subscribing and checking out some more vids for sure! Great job, and I'd love to see the finished product you got with this buckle! Did you add the "knob" after or recast the buckle? Thanks for the great vid!

Thanks so much. I'm ashamed to say that I never went back to that buckle and fixed it. I really should do more belt buckles. Seemed like that was all I was casting for a while then for some reason just stopped.
I'll keep an eye on your instagram page for your casting. Unless of course you put a video up. Keep me posted, I'd love to see it.
@@swdweeb that is sad to hear! It was a beautiful casting! Sometimes you gotta get out of your "box"... me casting a belt buckle is stepping out of my "box". Its good for ya! I appreciate the support and will hopefully be adding more videos. I do lots of cool stuff I'm sure people would love to see... I just rarely think to film any of it Haha! Thanks for the reply and keep up the good work!
Prong or no prong, still a cool pour. And a cool buckle. P.S. brass soldiers up pretty easy, just sweat you a prong on.
Only problem i this is bronze, not brass. I don;t know if it I could braze something on or not. It's likely going to revisit the crucible ;-)
@@swdweeb there are brazing rods for aluminum bronze and other bronzes. Give it a try with some general purpose bronze rods (home depot or lowes should carry them for around $6 but there goes your YT profits lol).
Perry, that looks good! I never meant it to be a challenge, just a suggestion. As I watched, I kept yelling at you that you were forgetting the prong! How about using the prong as one of the vent tube?
Yeah, I've got to come up with something that will cause me to remember. They're tto much work to leave something like that out.
Nice job on the belt buckle. I see you made it for a collection so it didn't need a prong to hook in a belt.
Yeah well, it'll probably be my bottle opener ;-) I need metal for that
@@swdweeb Hmmm, it might be a bottle opener already. Is that crossbar strong enough?
@@andrewmartin4258 Better be, I'm planning on making the same size bar for my opener. It's only got to work once... unless I forget to turn the camera on ;-)
Braise a tang on - much easier than trying to cast it and feather it in when you do the final linishing
Nice one
Argh, so close! Came out great other than the prong...
Kinda like "other than that Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?" ;-)
I was wondering if you forgot the prong. Oops, it came out great anyway
Came out and is going right back in :-)
Came out great. Braize on the piece.
Too late, it's already back in the crucible ;-)
what are your mold or models made of? thanks. also I found it strange I watched this video on mothers day yesterday lol
Most of my molds are 3-D printed. They're plastic with body filler and paint. Then I sand them as smooth as I can
That surge trap seems to be doing wonders. Who needs prongs when you have a surge trap, anyway?
I hadn't thought of it that way. You're exactly right :-D Wait till you see the one I'm using on my bottle opener, it's huge.
Unfamiliar with buckles with prongs so I have no idea what it looks like in the pattern BUT would it be possible to create a hole/cavity/divot in the back of the pattern to remind you something had to be fitted there?
What did you use to smooth out the lines in the print?
I’ve actually done that. It didn’t help. I still forgot it. I need to put a lock on my furnace lid with a note that says “did you put the prong in?” Even still I fear I’ll find a way to forget it. ;-)
It must be difficult to restrain oneself when the metal in the cauldron is ready and waiting
Love your vids man!
Love your comments! :-D
@@swdweeb I've been thinking about getting a 3d printer. any thoughts on vid's to learn how to do the 3d modeling and slicing and such?
@@jameshauge852 Well, it depends on the modelling software that you use. Most peole seem to use Fusion3D. There are tons of videos out there on how to do various things. I used Designspark mechanical. They have getting started stuff built in to the software that was how I got started. I personally found Fusion to hard to learn. I gave up after about 10 minutes. But as I said, most people seem to be using it so understand that my not using it is all on my being impatient.
Regarding slicing, I know of two tools. Prusa Slic3r and Cura. I prefer Cura about 198 times more than slic3r. I've run multiple side by side tests and Cura always gives me a better print. That may just be my printer but...
So, I model in Designspark, save the file as an stl and drag that stl into Cura to get the gcode file.
@@swdweeb i have 0 knowledge and 0 experience, so i don't use any modelling software yet :D
I'll check fusion3d... your advise sounds great! Thank you!
How do you make your mold? Is it 3d printed?
Yes, I modeled it using DesignSpark Mechanical and then 3d printed it
@@swdweeb thank you. Great videos!
Is it time for us to start a tally on how many times you forget the prong? Or is it time for you to learn TIG welding so you can weld a prong on ;-)
looks great otherwise.
I think its time fopr me to stop showing them ;-/
Ask - How high can you count?. ..😊 Maybe we should organise his wife to stand behind him with a rolling pin at the ready should he look like forgetting - women have such better memories... Martin
Heh..
@@olfoundryman8418 I get a little lost counting after 20 without an abacus. ;-)
@@swdweeb please don't be like that, it's more fun when you bring us along on the whole journey, missed prongs and all. But do let us know if we are razzing you too hard, it's no fun if we are not laughing with you.
You forgot the prong and the C.
Yeah I know. You mean I got the U wrong, it should have been a C. Maybe for your birthday ;-)
Cool
thanks
very nice! what a time to visit Israel...
It was, the temperature was actually pretty mild the whole time we were there. Things were still green as well ;-) Even the fireworks in the south weren't an issue.
Never get into CSA belt buckles. There was no standard so each state designed there own. Even within the States they varied between units. My son is into Civil War reenactments and it will drive you mad trying to buy them.
I actually read that. I also read that because a lot of them were so poorly made in the south that they're really easy to counterfeit.
