  • Casting a large belt buckle using aluminum-bronze. The buckle turned out great and look good on the end of my belt. ;-) I'm pretty sure there are more of these in my future.

    I forged a belt buckle with a similar style a few months ago. I wear it everyday. When I first became interested in casting the goal was to make buckles for all my Grand kid with their name on them. I am now seeing this as a possibility. Thanks for sharing your experience with us....

    NO - DON’T TAKE THE BELT OFF!!!!!
    Phew, I was worried there.
    Well, I reckon a cowboy’s gotta do whatta cowboy’s gotta do, and if that means casting in the drag with no vent, I sure rightly reckon it’s darn tootin swell with me.
    And now I’ve offended most of the US with my appalling cowboy impression, well done sir! An excellent demonstration. I was surprised by the lack of a vent, but you pulled it off (not just the belt).
    I have only one criticism… that buckle deserves something else on the front… I’m thinking two leaves sort of forming a V. I’m not sure why that comes to mind ; )

    Nice job on that! That finish came out really good 👍🏻 what kind of oil did you use to make the burnt sand useable again. I feel like I go through mine really fast. Keep up the good work

    • @swdweeb
      @swdweeb  6 лет назад +1

      I was feeling the same thing, going through the petrobond too fast. Now I only use the new stuff to line the pattern and fill the bulk of my box with the old burned out stuff. I use 10w-30 non-detergent motor oil to bind it back together. I know I've also heard that I need to use isopropyl alcohol as some sort of catalyst, but I don't. I just mix the oil and sand in a bucket using a paddle I made to stick in my drill press. ruclips.net/video/WTDsOJpAVhI/видео.html So far so good. The old stuff still packs hard enough to hold together in the casting box and the new stuff gives me the strength and smoothness I need for facing the pattern.
      Good luck on the challenge with those two foreigners. Someone needs to show then how its done. :-D

    it is surprising just how little metal is in the buckle. I think you could have gotten away with smaller runners and gates. wonderful work, and nice polish.

    • @swdweeb
      @swdweeb  6 лет назад +1

      Clearly I hadn't done any sort of volumetric analysis prior to the pour as I was shocked when it quit taking metal. ;-)

    • @WaltSorensen

      Doing a volumetric analysis before the pour... wouldn't that be moving into new territory for you ;-) (putting aside your math based background)

    • @danharold3087
      @danharold3087 6 лет назад

      It’s easy to get the plumbing too small when casting thin pieces. The large gating ensures the Metal is still hot enough to fill the mold cavity. Better to err on the large side.

    • @WaltSorensen
      @WaltSorensen 6 лет назад

      True, you definitely don't want to be too small. oh the competing interests in casting how small is too small, how big is too big?

    Congrats! That came out great despite the posts being a little too close together for your belt. Hopefully they don't get in the way too much when you thread the end with the holes through there.
    Welcome to the homemade bronze belt buckle club! I like making belt buckles. Yours is nice and thin too, that is good - mine is a bit heavy and will pull my belt out of my pants if I try to walk around with it unbuckled for some reason. :)

    • @swdweeb
      @swdweeb  6 лет назад +1

      I suppose that falls in the "always be prepared" camp :-D
      Unfortunately this one will likely see the inside of the furnace again. I've already printed up a new pattern that has the posts far enough apart that I should be able to build a proper "keeper" (www.bealscowboybuckles.com/buckle-lingo/) . I also need a better "post" I'm thinking a stainless pan-head screw.

    I've been trying to figure out the hardware- this helps! How did you attach the pin to make the post? Tig?

    • @swdweeb
      @swdweeb  Год назад +1

      It was a royal pain, I cast it as part of the buckle. I just used a nail and poked it into the sand. I can't tell you how many times I pocked it in wrong and had it slanting the wrong direction. TIG would have been far easier

      What, you've never played the first comment game? It's a community building exercise, just like leaving spoilers in the video of upcoming projects. Lots of ways people work in ways to build communities and boost comments i.e. engagement one of those things the RUclips's algorithm loves.
      Oh I see, you used your wife's award as a template, the ones I've seen given at some shows are dinner plates probably 6 inches across ( my grandfather just got trophies as the belt buckle awards were not a thing back then)
