Your channel is super helpful to me! I learn best when hearing someone explain something instead of reading the explanation. You explain things in an easy to understand way and that's very nice :)
Beppi Berger We can understand Swedish people. Although they have some words that are different. Danish is very similar to norwegian (since our language is based of theirs) but they mumble a lot. So it's hard to understand, but possible! I hope I answered your question! :)
Your lessons are great to give me something to learn while I am on Winter holidays from university. Looking forward to your lessons. Many thanks from Oz!
Snakkes or sees are interesting because technically I think the "s" at the end makes them passive forms of those verbs. For instance, "Vi maler huset" (We’re painting the house) versus "Huset males" (The house is being painted). In English writing it's often called the passive voice, instead of the active voice. And you can also make jokes by saying things like "Mistakes were made," instead of admitting "I made a mistake." In the case of "vi sees" or "vi snakkes" though, the passive form gives the verb reciprocity, so "vi sees" would mean "we'll see each other." I like these phrases since we definitely use "see you later" or "talk to you later" a lot in English. Just my 2 cents on them! Thanks as always for awesome videos, Karin! I've learned so much!
Hei, Karin thanx for all your good work! Very user-friendly and professional! I'm planing to move to Norway this year so the language lessons are spot-on for me! I can't wait to see your beautiful country and to learn the language fluently! New year - new challenge :)
I also have video lessons on RUclips,I teach English in Spanish and I must say that this video is awesome! I like your style. Your lesson is quite clear and easy to comprehend.
I've been learning norwegian for almost 40 days now with Duolingo. It's really helpful to hear a real person pronounce the language (on Duolingo it sounds very much computer generated). It's a good listening training, at the very least. So... tusen takk og ha det! :)
I'm Canadian, don't know much Norwegian but I have used the "goodbye" phrases when playing on Call Of Duty with friends I met through another game from Norway
OMG thank you so much i love you. Your videos are going to help me a lot. I decided to study in Norway (if i can bc its my dream) and im trying to learn Norwegian thank you!!!
Thank you for posting this video. I am very interested I learning your language. It is very hard to get anything in the US about learning Norwegian. Keep it up and thank you!
This is really helpful. Coming into Norway for a week and I don't want to just go around acting like English should be spoken! I wont get very far, but I will be trying!
Interesting… In Czech we use quite similar phases - we say "Have yourself fine!" as goodbye and also not "Vi snakkes", but something, what I can translate as "Vi høres" :)
Tusen Takk! I am planning a trip to Oslo in april next year. The flight does not cost much, but I have learned that Norway is even more expensive country to live in than Finland, where I come from. Hallo, norwegians. I am coming to your country and fund your economy by being a consumer, in this case, a tourist, for 5 days. ;-)
This is so weird that I'm watching this. I randomly watched video a of yours, liked the way you talk (the ae, phi, and a0 video). Watched another video, couldn't understand a few things in (the sounds skj, kj, rs) so I found Norwegian language interesting - because it was a glaring blindspot that I couldn't hear two sounds as different (wrong and right way of saying skjole) Now I've subscribed to your channel, and I've no clue why I'm watching these videos :) Maybe because you seem like a fun person (I like how your videos sound/feel if that makes sense :)) and norwegian also seems strange and interesting, so, yeah. Again, so weird :)
I'm on your side Dheeraj Bhaskar ;) My bf also learns Norwegian, maybe I should recommend him these youtoube videos. He has been learning it with a book so far.
Very well organized and delightful presentation. I would like to learn more Norwegian, as that is my heritage, but I don't think I can put up with a tongue piercing in order to get the accent perfect. Still, it is tempting, given the fine lesson here.
Many thanks (4 years later 😆) I'm off to Oslo next month and want to show willing 😉 I will try to find the courage to use the basics New sub for you 😉😎
Hallo.Jeg føler meg bra å se denne videoen fordi jeg er norsk også. This may not all be correct but those of you who dont relly understand Norwegian it means" Hello.I feel good to watch this video because I am Norwegian too.

Hei, I'm planning on visiting Norway soon. I'd like to learn a few Norwegian phrases to say just to be friendly with people. Besides the basic Hello, Goodbye... do you recommend a few other "break the ice" phrases? How do you say "cheers", "excuse me", "please", "thank you", and most importantly "Do you speak any English"? Thank you for the great videos! p.s. What's "Brunost" and why is it a popular saying?
T Sizzle Hey! :) Thanks for your suggestion! Have you seen any of the sentences videos? Might be something usefull there! :) And also, check out the "How are you" video :) brunost i brown cheese, which is from goat! I personally dont like it. But many do! norway is known for it! :D
Hi Karin, I'm currently in Norway! What a beautiful country, I think I'm in love! I just hike Priekestolen this morning and now staying at a hostel between Odda and Ullensvang. Tomorrow heading Bergen! I wish I had much more time... I really would love to go to Lofoten Islands. Sigh. -Tony.

If any of you have any questions about the Norwegian language, just fire away! :)
is it hard to understand danish or swedish people ? i know you cant understand people from iceland, can you understand finish people `?
Beppi Berger
We can understand Swedish people. Although they have some words that are different.
Danish is very similar to norwegian (since our language is based of theirs) but they mumble a lot. So it's hard to understand, but possible!
I hope I answered your question! :)
Beppi Berger Finnish for Norwegians is just as foreign as Chinese! :)
Beppi Berger
And by the way! We understand Icelandic people, because they are actually Norwegian vikings! (If you go far enough back in time)
Beppi Berger That's true! (We understand them, but only slightly)
Your lessons are great to give me something to learn while I am on Winter holidays from university. Looking forward to your lessons. Many thanks from Oz!

Love the explanations. Especially Mårna. Hear it all the time and it is nice to know that there is acutally no direct translation. :-)
I've spoken norwegian for 20 years, and I'm currently learning japanese, but still watched the whole video for some reason.
I'm in love with this launge

Very informative, Takk skal du ha!
I’m trying to teach myself Norwegian so that i can better attach myself to my grandmothers life and what she spoke growing up
Great video. I am half noreweign and French.
Omg same
I discovered Ylvis videos on youtube last weekend and suddenly I find myself willing to understand norwegian... what a weird subconscious I have...
Based on these examples, I think we got more of our greetings from Teutonic and Nordic languages than we did from the romance languages.
Interesting… In Czech we use quite similar phases - we say "Have yourself fine!" as goodbye and also not "Vi snakkes", but something, what I can translate as "Vi høres" :)
most of these are the exact phrases we use in Danish :o wow
Scandinavia is just (advanced) version of (us) Balkans, hahaha.
Norway needs to grow some balls and enforce Nynorsk as the written standard and of course speech would shortly start to follow.
modestmm guy, learn some history...
I'm learning Danish, so I shouldn't be watching that 'cause then I use the "music and rythmic" of Norwegian in Danish, so it sounds really weird O.o
Interesting, thanks for create and share

Me and my family wants to move to Norway so I have to learn this language.
hei pa deg .( how do you do ) Takk for sist . Ha Det fint. Har du Det bra ? ja .Jeg har Det bra.Adjo. . Hello . thank you very much for teaching.the sound very awesome. You very professional teacher.for me I just listing,so I can snakkes .
good list for greetings, thanks
My goodness, every video I've seen of a Norwegian woman, they're all drop-dead gorgeous!
Hei . Tusen takk.
gut. tak dut. just what i was looking for
Adjø sounds almost like spanish "Adios"
Adjø was more used in the old times where people was very polite with eachother. :)
Adjø is a French loanword from the word Adieu.
Nice information
Asalamalaykumm Karin , I must say you are a natural language teacher and the movement of you lips are a witness to and testify to it . Ok Karin, vi snakkes senere!
Marna maybe translates to "see you tomorrow" ??
If I don't wrong in Flemish we say "Morgen" to say hello. The Norwegian accent is a little closer to Dutch/Flemish accent.
I hope in Norway when you say "Hello" in Norwegian, they answer "Hello" too in Norwegian,I hope they are polite too
They do, trust me i live there
Sometimes they say hello and hive a smile
yes they will say hello back to you if you make your self clear that you speak english
Tusen hjertelig Karin! 👍

What car is the Norwegian car? Happy Kwanzaa! Bye to you and kristin
halo is also German hello
its Hallo
Yes but it's written "Allô" and it's only used when we pick up the phone and we ask who is talking :)
Errr! also the rest of the world! haha!
No im german and thats not how u say it its hallo
Scandinavians came from what is now germany. Angelo saxens they were called. That's why theres so many words and phrases that overlap.
In Switzerland we say for good morning "Guete Morge" and in Germany "Guten Morgen"
Is Halla very common? I've gotten in the habit of using that as my go to, but I don't have a lot of Norwegian people to talk to as a frame of reference. It's hard to find uses of it online (google translate, etc) so I'm wondering if it's not a very common way of saying hello.
It's very common! :) (for people under 45-ish, I would say!).
0:38 there is a song in this name!. Now i know what does it mean! 😃
I’ve been using Mondly to learn and you are far easier to understand some of the voices on the app. Thanks
I like the norway language songs awesome...
You say, good luck (or good luck with that) a lot, is that like a common phrase in norwegian? what would the norwegian phrase be if there's one? :)
Good luck = Lykke til
Good luck with that = Lykke til med det
Source: I'm norwegian
Dont know what skam is but i guess ill go check it out
Mange takk! :) Jeg håper beholde min norsk, jeg har ikke studert din språk i 3 år! :o
hi dear how are you? your video clip is good & helpful.
Hei!Tusen takk!❤️❤️
Hei Karen,
You seem uncertain as to the origin of "Mårna”. Perhaps I can help. You correctly noted
"Mårn" (in some dialects "Morn") is a contraction (forkortelse) of the salutation "Morgen" or "God morgen". "Mårna" is a contraction of the valediction (avskjedshilsen) "God morgen da".
Hilsen Isbjørn
+Robert A Gunderson åh! Kult :D tusen takk! :D
wow amazing language.
I would learn nor. just because of you
Heisann! Teacher Karin did you add one more "e" at the list "Vi sees"? if there's special rule please correct me:))) thank you for reading
ho HANK Hey! :) yes I did. This is optional though. You can say "Ses" and "sees", i think Ive just grown up with the two ee's! :)
thank you for taking time to explain!
so flink. jeg lærer norsk, takk for hjelpen i uttale.flaatt
Do all scandinavians undestand each other at some degree? i mean sweden people with norwegian and danish etc? i can guess is like my native language spanish compared with portuguese that is pretty undestandable and maybe italian that its a little harder to undestand each other but without a doubt you can communicate.
Actually we don't. Icelandic and finnish is totally different from Norwegian, Swedish and Danish.
Norwegians, Swedish people and danish people usually understand each other quite well except some hard Dialects. I am Norwegian and I have worked as a flight attendant so I have been quite a lot around all the different scandinavian languages. si jaja, soy noruega pero llevo desde los 7 años viviendo en canarias asi que es como mi segundo idioma :) !! Que guay, brasil !! Yo entiendo bastante bien el portugues pero pff para hablarlo no sirvo jaja
Karin : Tusen takk ! That has clarified a lot what my (older) neighbor says "bye" in so many ways that I have never been to catch. And one quick question for you: I have read somewhere that it is more common to say "ha det" to answer someone telling first "ha det bra", but that the opposite is not very "Norsk" (= you do not hear someone telling "ha det bra" to answer one who told "ha det").
Is that correct ? Can you comment please ?
THANK YOU FOR YOUR VIDEOS !
this is great, though I find its good to watch your favorite shows in Norwegian,
It has been really useful for me the usage of the IPA characters in learning english; unfortunately I haven't found any resource (neither a dictionary) that includes IPA characters for norwegian. Could someone please help me to find any dictionary or webpage with IPA characters for norwegian?
Hola Andres, se de una pagina que creo que te vendra bien pero veo que comentaste esto hace 4 meses asi que puede que ya lo tengas :) de todas formas aqui esta : norwegian.typeit.org/ Lykke til :)
