- Black Sabbath, live at the Hammersmith Odeon in London 1978. Audio remastered by me. I make no legal claim to any of this content. Strictly for archival purposes.
I could not find a usable version of War Pigs so I have substituted 2 bonus tracks in it's place.
I love that Tony is always smiling, instead of pretending to be mean like any other guitar player.
Long live the metal's godfather
Watch the Killing Yourself to Live video from Cal Jam 1974. The face Tony makes when he nails that harmonic during his solo. Perfectly sums up how I feel about Sabbath.

@judgelazar, pretty amazing gig, love how you can see the band not only at their prime, but also the joy of playing
I,d be smiling like that !!! if I,d done that much Coke lol
For Geezer too!!!
They snorted half a Colombian village before the show!
Bill Ward looks like a battle-hardened axe-wielding viking on those drums
Nice
is*, not looks like
That's because he is
He looks like Tommy Clufetos. A bit chunkier.
@@CrouchingWeinerHiddenErection Doyle if he played drums.
Let’s all appreciate Bill Ward’s drumming 😍
You know it!
No Bill ward No Black Sabbath.
He's a monster
Symptom of the Drum Fill
He's one of the best
The world first thrashmetal song. Downpicking and high vocals. Love it.
Just good melodicrock

I was there 17 years old 60 now but still remember it like yesterday went deaf afterwards for two hours / those where the days
Thats so cool!
What a experienceee
Saw Sabbath twice in 2013 and 2016.Two killer shows.
Thats awesome seeing them in there prime.
My father attended this tour in Birmingham - he introduced me to Sabbath by listening to the first album sat in the dark
70's Cocaine + Black Sabbath= Most amazing tunes, ever bestowed on Mankind!!
80s ...too young sorta'..... late 90s ... fuckin' dynamic.....creeper 'cain.....
You are correct sir
Dude you said it all haha
@@sheawoods1530 I was glad someone out there saw it the same way I do.
Probably one of the cokeheads next to me trying to talk above the band. Didja feel a few sharp elbows in your ribs ... that was me.
Geezer Butler had more stage presence than most guitarists at the time.
It's because he didn't have to try he is himself and humble and a storm of a human
Bill Ward ....Greatest rock drummer ever
Tied with Bonham
You are so right MAN!
Yup 👍
@@lilnerf9269 damn right
The first record I ever bought was Sabotage, I was 11, I am now 57, and I still think it’s one of the greatest albums EVER!
It’s my personal favorite of theirs
I've listened to Sabbath for 28-years but only recently started listening to Sabotage and I think it is my favorite of theirs.
Amazing album. One of my top 5 favourites along with Appetite, Sticky Fingers, Beggars Banquet and Badmotorfinger
Amazing! It's also the first album I didn't care about you buying. Remind me never to become the old guy who talks about how old he is all the time
Most underrated, but the heaviest from Sabbath - this was the first track on a Sabbath comp tape my dad did for me as a kid in 98
That was fucking epic. All, and I mean ALL metal bands need to bow down to Black Sabbath. It all started here.
Ozzy has a unique voice tone that rarely comes by.
I get the ozzy voice comment yet to record but I will be ;) bold statement but I'm much different love his work ...after cancer took my father in 2013 ...
Ozzy was a huge inspiration...always has been!
said it before but Acid Mammoth sounds similar. doesn't sound like Ozzy here though
One of a kind voice. You know it's Ozzy immediately when u hear it.
@@josephkony3993 a shit ton of non Sabbath doom metal bands sound like Ozzy lol. Because they’re trying to sound like him.
He was singing in concert tuning (440) on this show, and he nailed it! It's very very hard for a man to sing that high without sounding like Andy Gibb. Outstanding!
Gezzer is a madman!!!!!
How he pounds his fist and whoosh the bass frets.....time to kick your ass.......
They all are!
Not trying to sound like one of those "I was born in the wrong generation" kids, but I really wish I could go back in time to see my favorite bands that are no longer around.
But I'm 33 and saw Black Sabbath twice and Heaven and Hell once. How couldn't you see them live?
@@rakusin Because I'm still a teen. It's not possible for me to see Pantera or Type O Negative.
@@rakusin born 2002 lol, missed my shot. At least i have RUclips. Wish I could’ve felt the sheer onslaught of Metal coming out of their speakers though..
No u dont
@@mikekeeler6362 how can you tell me what i do and don't want
Ozzy's singing is so powerful!!
I really like this more aggressive gruffness he has during this show.
@@JudgeLazar I like that too. Sometimes I wonder if he's having trouble hearing his monitor because of the excessive volume and he gets more aggressive. It has to be murder on the voice, night after night like that.
Never heard anything like it.
Some say the first thrash song ever. I think I might agree...
Punkin Pie Jones
Speed metal perhaps? Thrash has more punk in it... Then again, splitting hairs
Nah, I agree with the other dude that commented
That intro is really close to being thrash or speed metal, definitely.
EDIT: But obviously, it isn't.
I would say Deep Purple's "Fireball," but definitely one of the first and highly influential.
One of my favorite Purple songs!
Bill is so underrated it actually hurst me
You are so right!
What's amazing, is everything you hear and read from them, they were in really bad shape at this point, mentally and physically. All really deep in addiction, especially Ozzy, but Tony even said, they all were, not quite as bad as Ozzy, but all were in bad shape.
Yet, they had some amazing shows during this time. This show is one of the better, mainly due to the quality of recordings, some other very good quality material out there, but wow. To still be able to perform on this level, Unbelievable!
Probably the shows were the moments they were free of all the problems going on, that's the beauty of music.
Man Bill Ward is the Gem of this band.
Hell YEAH, My friend!
Fuckin’ A
It's because he cut his chops playing jazz. One of his influences was Buddy Rich for Pete's sake. Metal was a step down for him.
It's amazing how Ozzy could sing night after night with that powerful guttural approach here. Amazing!!!
My favorite Sabbath riff! 🤘🏼🫡
Not merely the first thrash song, but the best.
Kiss had a good song called ''Parasite'' that was good to listen to that riff
no performance exaggerations, just pure, heavy and raw sound!
Notice how Tony Iommi palm mutes the strings when he's playing the start of the solo at the end. Gives that chunky sound.
It's amazing the expansion of bill wards drumkit from a little 5 piece kit in 1970 to a kit that rivaled neil pearts in size
Strange to hear Ozzy literally screaming his voice off in this live version, nice.
He's awesome!
Let me hear you scream
Those riffs are so heavy that in order to sing over them ozzy had to nearly scream. That's why so many other metal bands vocalist growl over riffs
So Ozzy almost invented grawling?🤔
@@thestig7603 grawling or that unintelligible stuff the voice death metal groups is not singing. Ozzy in his pomp could sing over iommi mountainous riffs
Nothing simultaneously better or worse than Ozzy drunk and coked out at the same time
Bill fucking Ward holy hell what a performance 🤘
one of best tunes, and that's saying something, geezer's bass is brilliant in this.
Don't care if Van halen out played them. Sabbath are always badass and original
1:05 ... The World Record standing jump set by Ozzy in 1978. Still stands today!!! :D
Great!!!!!!!!!!
Bill Wards slow drum fills are so epic sounding during this song.
Perfect band. A perfect quartet, the best guitar man of the world, best bass player, best front man and best drummer, i think.
This song is waaaaay ahead of it's time!
HOW GOOD IS BILL WARD HERE!!!.Saw the original line up in Boston,Mass. Feb 1999.
Cool
I'm a guitar player, but I'm really digging Geezer's bass tone and playing. Sounds great!
Do you know the reason why geezer was using a Rickenbacker he left his regular base at home and he had that Rickenbacker that he had gotten from Glenn Hughes that's the only time he's ever played it
geezer is great!i m playin bass because this dude on fire!
Bill Ward "STRONG"
Killer riff!
Tony knows how to write them!
Lord Iommi is the Riff King
Strange seeing Bill behind a huge kit like that, the early footage of Sabbath he was behind a basic kit, which I always found fascinating, the way they could whip up such huge, menacing sound with a basic guitar, bass and drums
The originators of heavy metal rock!
From Tokyo with big love👍💞
Very heavy. They sounded great!! Powerful performance!!
The last part from the album version is my fav, a shame they didnt perform that too
Jazz. Nice.
Black Sabbath performed the entire song during the 1994 Cross Purposes tour, you can watch it here on RUclips
@@prowlerzinhoahhh, I was scrolling for this comment. Thank you ✌🏽🌻
The true masters.
Bill smashing the drums, Geezer on that Rick, Iommi on that John Birch - all of them on the devil’s dandruff absolutely fucking having it!! I was born too late
Sabotage. Man what a crazy album that was. Fucking killer. Megalomania, The Writ, Dont Start Too Late. Every song is sick. Never Say Die I loved too. I could go on for days.
Best song of Black Sabbath ever! Based on tritone, the devil's intervall. Great guitar work! I learned a lot by learning this.

Ozzy is so happy to be up there
He is. They all are. Butler. Iommi. 🫶🏼
WHAT A FUCKING TUNE !!! I saw them live at Hammerrsmith doing this and all the other classics as a tender 15 year old boy. There were serious metalheads, bikers and Hell's Angels there and it was amazing. plaster was coming off the ceiling and the balcony was bouncing up and down. I am now lucky enough to live about 2m from Ozzy in Buckinghamshire.
Where are REAL bands like this today ???
Best 👍😎 Heavy Metal band ever and the first I'm 59 now I got into sabbath in 75 when I was just 13 they were so different and heavy then anybody else at the time THEIR MUSIC WAS AWESOME 😎 AND STILL LOVE THEM TODAY SAW THE 9 TIMES IN CONCERT
Christopher Zappala, you are one of the most fortunate people on planet earth. I cannot even imagine what experience you would have had.
BILL WARD is an Animal on DRUMS... Luv It !!
Absolute pure joy radiating off the lot of them. You love to see it. What a whopper tune!
Ozzy is so super animated every time I see him. And always smiling. Saw him first in 1983 and he was just running around everywhere. He reminds me of a fan in the audience standing next to me. Just stoked and jumping up and down and major excited yelling, "Come on!" He is his own biggest fan. Such a fun dude. \m/ 4:34
One of my favorite Black Sabbath songs EVER!!! Bill Ward ROCKs along with the rest of the band! Thank you Judge Lazar For uploading!
They still smoke bands of today......
People still smoke to this band today !
what's weird is they were smoked off the stage every night on this tour by Van Halen.
@@tyronejefforeillyramirez7961 van Halen... Man... Killer concert for sure.

Supertzar and then Symptom Of The Universe... Sabbath really knows to blew your mind.
Hot damn! That kicked ass!!
Back then in 1998 or '99, i bought that BS "video collection" (+ interviews) VHS. I was 13 and that song + "children of the grave" (California jam 1974) did impress me the most.
I used to watch this vhs on my grandparent's vcr, while they were reading newspapers. Good times. 😊👍
And They say Van Halen blow em away?? i cant see that by this performance and Power!!
Well guess who started that rumor...
I was there in Chicago 1978 . It was great to see my favorite band. Van Halen was good, but they are not Sabbth
No disrespect but I saw this tour and VH killed them. Period.
Van Halen who?
Seriously man that's like one of the stupidest things I've ever heard
Hands down one of the greatest sabbath songs.
The real Heavy Metal Fathers...
God Fathers!
The founding fathers.
Nop, Zepp did it a whole year before Sabbath.
The Beatles with "Helter Skelter" song
fmtf niuprog I wouldn’t consider that metal because instrumentals themselves are only part of it. That song is too up beat and happy compared to the darkness and satanic imagery of sabbath
Goosebumps ...this the real deal
The true one & only god's of metal!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
One of their best performances. At the height of their powers. KEEP THE SABBATH!.
Lol ironically this tour, the never say die tour, in 1978 with Van Halen as their opening act is Black Sabbaths lowest point of their career with the original line up, right before Ozzy was fired.. even though they sound epic and are playing at the top of their game.
Was at the Chicago show and it was the best sabbath ever.
Thank God for RUclips! Now I can blast this on my smart TV! I love the Intro to this! It Rocks!
Greatest Band Ever.
Symptom of the Drum Fill. Covers of this all over internet, even Sepultura drummer. No one does it like Ward. Like how he slows down the hits at end of each fill in most of the fills. Unreal. So much control. Every other cover does double hits.
Tony created magic every time he picked up a guitar, a genius player
Killer time in music history!I wish i could go back live the 70'and 80's!!
The Masters of Metal!
I was at this concert on Monday June 19th 1978. It was added as an additional date at the last moment purely to shoot this video. The last show with Van Halen was 2 days earlier.
Ozzie sang pretty good that night - the problem here is that the modest equipment used by a relatively small video company back then couldn't handle the volume and power. The original VHS and Betamax recordings were also of poor quality by todays standards. Great show though and even greater memories of 1978. This was my third Black Sabbath gig in 10 days.
Please check my "Church of Iommi" playlist for more good stuff. Thanks for watching.
sabfan66: Was Ozzy better here than the other two shows you saw prior? It's amazing how his voice can handle that screaming every night!
Sabfan66, Please, let me use your comment for the project called "The Diary of Sabbath Fans. I'm compiling the anecdotes/stories related to our Eternal Idols "The guys from Birmingham". I do invite you joining on Facebook.
Sort of. It was a rescheduled gig from 11 June 1978. Me and my mates turned up on the 11th only to be told there had been a 'PA failure' and the concert for that night was cancelled. We had to keep phoning the Odeon during the week to be told what day the rescheduled date was. You may remember the rumour at the time was that they cancelled deliberately because Van Halen were bringing the house down every date. The support act this night was Tanz Der Youth. They weren't very good. Sabbath were excellent.
yeah will do. feel free to use my comments
08/29/78 Philadelphia Spectrum!!!! Awesome show !! VH kicked ass too !!!

This video is a good explanation as to why Geezer is my IDOL, just look at him go🔥🤘🏼
Been a fan since I was 12 yo back i the early 70's. First heard Master of Reality & was completely blown away. Even today the sound of that album is so good. A lot of modern, dark metal bands actually emulate that sound & Sabbath actually return to it somewhat on the '13' album. The Sabotage sound is much brighter & relies a lot on reverb expansion but it still sounds great. Who can fail to be blown away by Hole in the Sky? Followed by that short Spanish guitar segue... then the abrupt blast to the senses that is Symptom of the Universe? What a groundbreaking song! These guys are legends!
I'm only 36 but I've listened to and analyzed every song with Ozzy so many times that I never skip a track. I can hear the masterful artistry in every song. No band I have ever listened to gives me the same emotional reaction as Sabbath. They would have to invent a new number to measure how much I've listened to Sabbath and there's still parts of the songs that just utterly blow me away. Like stop whatever I'm doing and just stare off into another dimension levels of awe.
1978 is the year I was aged 9 having born been born in 1969, and also classic and cult sci-fi series Blake,s Seven began its television debut for its 3 year run.
great upload. Love Black Sabbath
Awesome!!!! The Omighty Sabbath.!!!
Saw them in Memphis in 78 or 79. Van Halen was the opening act. Had 3rd row seats. My ears rung for a week. Awesome show.
Definitely one of the best live Sabbath shows.
I've noticed through the years that Tony became better, more technically precise in his playing. The End Tour proved that! Superb metal, and un-matchable!
Ozzy sounds terrible
@@ripper28091976 Ozzy sounds great!!!

Man, everyone says "If I had a time machine, I'd do this and that."
I say "If I had a time machine I'd go back to 1969 and follow Sabbath like people followed The Grateful Dead, and if I remember it, I wasn't fucked up enough." If I could only see one old school show, I'd have a nervous breakdown trying to decide between Paris 1970 or Don K's rock concert TV show.
This is a really kick ass show. I actually need to touch up the audio. I had crappy headphones when I did it, now that I have better ones I can hear some nasty high end annoyance. Check out the other videos in the list as well. Got some good stuff in there.

I just remember driving 100 mph on a sunny day- blasting with Black Sabbath- best band ever
I just want to point out that Tony being given center stage makes me happy as a guitar player :) It's like they put him right in front in the middle so everyone would see what a freak he is a guitar. Ozzy is one of the best frontmen of all time but Its good to see Tony getting to be the spectacle for a change.
Viking on drums 😍
This, boys and girls, is why Black Sabbath are the Masters Of The Universe. My wife asked me to turn it down, I said "Heavy Metal can't ever, ever be turned down!, Go to bed and dream about it!"
I sure wish that a live album would've happened after the tour for NEVER SAY DIE!! Sabbath were on absolute fire here!! 🤘🤘
Bill Ward's drumming blows me away and this is 1978
bill ward slays. its hard to imagine that he didnt like john bonham playing his set because bonham would beat the shit out of his drums.
John Bonham, the best drummer of all times ( i like Bill Ward and Ian Paice...but the true is the true)
@@dirigiblegraff2519 Nope. Bill Ward best. Only opinion of course.
exact, It is an opinion, not an objectives fact.
Bonzo changed the Way he played t'he drums and understood the role of the drums, establishing a before and an after, and was a benchmark for future generations according to music crítics.
Ward (Which I love, really as well as Black Sabbath), was another one of many great drummers...
And I don't want to come un conflict, dear Jacques!!🤝✌️
Led zeppelin opened up for sabbath then?
Not only THE FIRST.... the original source of an entire genre, BUT to this day the best rhythm section of any Metal band ever. Geezer can play circles around those who came after. Bill Ward possesses CERTAIN ASPECTS to his playing that >>>Bonham. Wards fills are absolute TOP LEVEL.
Tony Iommi was/is THE 👑 KING of the nasty riff with a powerful punch and timeless hook. Tony’s riff Wizardry >>> Even guys like Page, Blackmore and Hetfield.
Ozzy was just born with that voice. My younger half brother (who’s opinion on many things I find very interesting as he’s a smart guy from a younger generation) once said of Ozzy.... “He sounds like a freaking Demon singing those old Metal classics”.
Black Sabbath.... the FIRST and the BEST EVER !!! 🦇🦇🔥🦇🦇

I love VH but there is no way they upstaged Black Sabbath on this tour
I used to have a video tape of this (yes, really!). It blew my bloody head off!. Watching this now in the twenty-worst century just makes it even better.
To the millennial twinks of today, turf all the doof-poof crap that passes for music these days and listen to a rock band going fucking nuts!🍻
I was only 10 when this came out- must have discovered it in the 80s when there was all the hair metal about but just thought it was amazing- the intro music then the madness especially as geezer and bill click in! Wow! Bill is utterly amazing on this
For anyone wondering why Ozzy has such a guttural voice here, it's because of the key change. The guitars are tuned up a minor third from the recording, which would be too high for his voice, so Ozzy is actually singing lower than even the studio version to compensate, pushing from his throat instead of singing through his nose like he usually does.
Ozzy's voice here.....amazing
