How to Properly use Eyeshadow as Eyeliner

- Today, I am going to show you two methods to use eye shadow as eyeliner.
Using an eye shadow as eyeliner is a great way to get creative and spot the look you want if you don’t have eyeliner or you don’t have it in the shade you want.
Tools you will need:
- A matte eyeshadow
- A shimmer eyeshadow
- A cup of water
- Pointed eyeshadow brush.
Method 1: Use Matte Eyeshadow as Eyeliner
Pick any matte eye shadow you like, grab a pointed eyeliner brush and dip it in a cup of water. Once the brush is damp/slightly wet, put it in the matte eye shadow and coat the brush.
Now, start creating the liner by following your upper lash line, and if you want, you can flick the end too. You can always use more water and coat the brush again with eye shadow to achieve the desired coverage and finish.
Method 2: Use Shimmer Eyeshadow as Eyeliner
It is possible to use shimmer eye shadow as eyeliner too and it gives a dramatic effect that’s creative as well.
Pick any shimmer eye shadow you like, grab your pointed eyeliner brush and dip it into a cup of water. Once the brush is damp/slightly wet, take some shimmer eye shadow and coat the brush.
Now, start using the liner by following your upper lash line and you can flick the end too if you like. You can always use more water and coat the brush again with eye shadow to achieve the desired coverage and finish.
Shimmer eye shadows are easier to work with than metallic/glittery eye shadow as its coverage is not as strong and you’ll have bigger flakes to work with.

Omg thank you so much I was wondering how people did it without wasting my makeup❤️❤️❤️
No problem 😊
@@MelissaVanDijkOfficial Thank you!😃😁
You can also scrape a small amount of eyeshadow to a flat surface like a mirror and then mix it with a little bit of eyeshadow primer with a very fine brush until you get the pigment intensity that you like
@@Monicalala could you mix eyeshadow into concealer then use it as eyeliner ?
Im literally using an angled paint brush for the eyeliner i- 😭🖐️

Thank you! Happy to help!😊
You're a gem Melissa! You know what I need
I use a eyeliner pen that's already been used up and then do a dark brown eyeshadow on the lids they work really good
That's a great tip! Thanks for sharing! :)
Girl you just changed my life and saved my money🥲
🤗
These are actually really good hacks, I’ll make sure to use them
thank you so much! will be trying this tomorrow:)
I have an lip filler brush and it looks exactly like her brush!
I tried it and it worked!
Awesome hack. Defenetly recommend trying it!
Can I use it again as normal eyeshadow after using it as eyeliner? I mean, will the eyeshadow get ruined if we use water?
Thank you so much for this! I didnt wanna spend 30$ on eyeliner pens on amazon 🙄. Also you are so gorgeous!!
Glad I could help! :)
Thank you! :)

Perfect. Thank you
You're welcome!
Woah it's so easy !
Very helpful. Thank you!!!
Glad it was helpful! :)
Thank you for showing that shimmer eyeshadow can be used also wet as eyeliner! I only used it dry and had a lot of fall out!
Honestly I never tried eyeshadow wet, because I feared to ruin them!
Can I use every eyeshadow wet? Some shadows say, you can use them also wet! And the others? Make them wet or not????
I would say that you can use most of them without a problem, but there are so many palettes on the market! If you aren't sure, try to use it in a corner or a small area before using the wet brush through the whole pan😊
@@MelissaVanDijkOfficial
Thank you for thinking for me!
Oh my gosh! Stupid me!
thank you💕
You're welcome 😊
Your so pretty omg
Aww 🥰 thankyou so much it’s helps me a lot thankyou❤️
Glad it helped!😊
if i did this with brow eyeshadow do you think it would work to fill in my brows? thanks x
Hmm..I would say so😅try it at the corner or close to the border of the brow eyeshadow pan so that you can test it and if it doesn't work you haven't messed it up only on that small area, but you still can use it afterwards😊 this is how I try it with eyeshadows are well😊
omg thank you you saved me!!!!
bless u❤✨
You're welcome!
tysm bae
Obsessed! Thank you so much. You're beautiful 🙃
Thank you so much!!🥰
thanks for the tips!! do u think you could make a video about turning powder eyeshadow to cream pls?
Hey! I haven't done makeup videos in a while as I'm currently focusing on skincare and cryptocurrency😊
@@MelissaVanDijkOfficial haha thats cool, i like that stuff too! :)
Wow this really helped me tysm ♡!
Glad it helped! :)
I will try it thanks
Omg thanks
Thanks a lot 🔥❤
I’ve been wanting to use a pink eyeliner, but don’t want to buy the actual eyeliner cus I probably would only use it once. Now ima start using different colors with this method. Also where did you get your mirror? It’s so cute
Hey! :)
Glad to hear that you enjoyed this video! :)
I got the mirror from Amazon :)
this is soo helpful, thank you :))
Glad it was helpful! :)
Wow you are so gorgeous ❤️
Does the water mess up the eyeshadow? Does it make the eyeshadow in the pan hard and unusable?
It depends on your eyeshadow (formulation), I recommend doing it at the border of the eyeshadow pan so that it doesn't mess up the eyeshadow.😊
Thank you so much!
Glad it helped!🥰
This was so helpful thank you!! Your earrings are gorgeous, may I ask where you got them from?
Thank you! They are hand-made from a Market in Port Douglas, in Australia😊 They are called @farnorthgems on Instagram😊
Beautiful mam from india💜
For me it's easier to use a thin angled brush. It's just more sturdy so you have more control.
There are different eyeliner brushes on the market! It is always important to find the right brushes that give you the control of how you apply your makeup! :)
@@MelissaVanDijkOfficial Yes ma'am I totally agree! Was just suggesting another option in case someone needed it...
i love the video!! i have one question.. if i do this often will the water ruin my eyeshadow on the palette?
Thank you!
This may depend on your eyeshadow...
If you aren't sure about it, you can try a small area along the eyeshadow pan's boarder. Or if you want to keep on using the same shadow for it, use only that one for you eyeliner :)
@@MelissaVanDijkOfficial thank you so much!!
Thanks
beautiful hair!
Thank you!! :)
does this work well for monolid eyes? I want red eyeliner for christmas outfits :)
Yes, however, you may want to create the liner a bit thicker to create a bolder look or very thin if you're going to keep it subtle! :)
Would it work like eyeliner sealer if I used setting spray with it?
Hm..it may stay put for a bit longer, however, you can also get eyeliner sealers from Kryolan for example which you can use on top of your eyeliner! :)
I like it and just subscribed it's useful very helpful. Can you suggest me a best makeup fixer
Hey! :)
Thank you❤️ Well, I like the Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray a lot :)
thankss😊
Thanks mam
Would you mind sharing the name of the brush that you are using please.
Thanks.
I used the Kryolan TOREY ROUND BRUSH 1 as it's super thin and pointed and the eyeliner can be done pretty easily😊
@@MelissaVanDijkOfficial Thanks
Love your jewelry setup! Makes me want to get more piercings 😅
Thank you!! 😊
First of your gorgeous n thanks for the video
Thank you!! :)
won’t the water like. dry out and fall off? would a primer work better?
i have no idea what i’m doing
Hm...not really. I haven't had any issues with this technique so far :)
How long does it last?? Its as good as hydra eyeliner… thanks for the vedio
It can hold up for an entire workday. However, it also depends on if you have drier or oilier eyelids or what else you wear on your eyes.
Hi I'm in middle school and I want to try doing my makeup but I don't have a eyeliner brush but I have some makeup brushes and one is small and I have art brushes so is there something I can use
You can try it with the smaller brush or art brush if the art brush isn't too hard it may work otherwise, this may irritate the skin. Makeup brushes are usually softer than art brushes :)
Thank you I appreciate it I didn't was to hurt my skin or do something wrong I've never did my makeup so this helped thank you
Does this work in the tear ducts?
Hm..what do you mean?
but how do you fix it, though? i mean, I have hooded eyes. what do I do so it won't transfer to another area when I open my eyes too much (also I live in a hot tea, so sweat...)
You can also get 'makeup sealers' which is a liquid that you can use on top of it to make it water-resistent.
Like this one: global.kryolan.com/product/cake-eye-liner-sealer
I have the same problem, I might try the setting spray liquid that someone else suggested. She said spray it onto the brush first then use the powder, or dip it directly into the bottle first instead of using water
Will the white Eyeshadow appear the same?
I haven't tried it with white eyeshadow😅
💜💜
I just subscribed!!
❤️
You are so beautiful!
Thank you :)
Bless your very spirit for the video, and also stating your name, so if I ever see your surname, I know how to pronounce it ( I am in America ).
I, last night, got to wondering how to use hard powder shadow for eye lining. I see for some years now there is no more bright green eyeliner, or what I call, Asian Green, because it used on some Asians, and it has me mistaken for Asian once when I wore it ( I am part Apache and Cherokee). I hope to score some bright green shadow online, as I now no longer see anything in budget stores except earth tones for most part. Awesome seeing in a comment of yours it might work for brows, as mine is almost not there due to years of arching them, sadly. So, want to try that instead of keeping brow pencils....
Thank you🥰
Well, I recommend testing it close to the boarder of your eyeshaow's pan so that you won't end up in a mess with your eyeshadow! Some eyeshadows - I guess that this depends on the formulation - work fine after dipping into it with water and others become messy...
@@MelissaVanDijkOfficial
So very sorry to just now reply, as I saw your reply the day you sent yours. Bless your very spirit for the love and reply!
Can we use mixing medium?or sealer
Yes, sure😊
Thanks 😇
Kryolan Eyeshadow's?
What you can also do is:
Grab eye shadow crush a bit of it then put a little bit of lotion in it
(the more lotion you put the less pigmented)
🥰
I think for that though you should be careful with what lotion you use. Make sure it’s an eye safe lotion.
@@SummerLangfordRWDCBSNL Thank you for saying this
Thankyou ❤️😊 and you are so cute❤️😊
Thank you🥰
What shadow are you using as the matte please?
It's a Kryolan Eyeshadow Palette. However, that one isn't matte; those are all shimmer shadows. But Kryolan also has matte eyeshadows, either single ones or as a palette :)
When I wet my brush and dip it into the palette, it messes up my palettes. Some powder palettes create a hard film when a certain portion gets in touch directly with setting spray or any liquid. Does it happen to anyone else? How to prevent?
Hey, this can happen which depends on the eyeshadow that you are using. So, if you aren't sure what's going to happen, just try it in a small area instead of wetting the entire pan and/or just get an eyeshadow that you can always wet and wouldn't use dry.
Can I use my paint brush instead of a makeup brush?
Hey! :)
Yes, as long as it is thin enough to create a liner and does not irritate the eye, go for it! :)
Sometimes paint brushes can feel a bit 'scratchy' on the skin, but if that isn't the case. Don't worry about it.
Can I use Aloe Vera gel instead of water to get the thickness?
You can try and see if that works. I haven't tried it with Aloe Vera :)
Okay thankyou💖
If we apply the eye shadow to the wet brush, then the eye shadow will not be bad??
This depends on the eyeshadow. If you aren't sure I recommend trying it out at first at the very border of the pan so that you won't 'mess up' the entire eyeshadow.
will this ruin the eyeshadow?
If you aren't sure, you can always try it with a small brush in the corner or close to the side so that you won't ruin the entire pan of eyeshadow😊
I threw my eyeliner away today. Not gonna buy new one, because since 2021 Spring I decided to not buy new makeup anymore. Only brow gel and mascara. Goal is to reduce makeup use and focus more on skincare. Can you use as well brush for eyebrows? How do you make it last, because my eyelids are oilier than my T-zone. 😅
Hey! :)
Yes, you could use this technique for your brows as well. Use an eyeshadow that matches your eyebrows and then fill them in, just keep in mind that it isn't water-proof😉
Will the water ruin the eyeshadow?
This depends on your eyeshadow! :)
If you aren't sure, try a tiny area that is close to the border of the pan so that you are not using it right in the middle of the eyeshadow :)
what about the lower lid?
Yeah, you can use the same technique on the lower lash line😊
Can we apply eyeshadow on Waterline???????
If it does not irritate your eyes, yes.
what about when the water dries on the eyeshadow
You mean in the palette? Well, you can only use it with water in a small area close to the pan itself so that you won't have the mess over the entire eyeshadow or just scratch the first layer off😊
Some eyeshadows will keep the top layer a bit weird but others won't change it when using it dry again😊
As we are using water here...will it be lasting atleast 12 hours?
This depends on your overall eyelids and activity. It can last pretty long however if you are concerned about it, look for a sealer like the one from Kryolan.
Will it not damage the eyeshadow palette if the brush is wet? 🥺🥺🥺
This depends on the eyeshadow. If you aren't sure about it, just try it on a smaller area close to the boarder of the pan before using it all over :)
@@MelissaVanDijkOfficial I already tried it! It definitely worked, thank you! ❤️
But will this stay considering it's just water and eyeshadow?
This depends on your eyeshadows and what you do with your eyes. If you have oily eyelids or rub your eyes, it can come off. However, you can get transparent sealers which you could put over it to make it long-lasting. Kryolan has a sealer.
how do i do it without a brush though 🧍🏻♀️
Hmm...it's difficult to do it without a brush since the brush will help you to create the line :)
💗💗 omg what is the name of that palette? 😱💗💗💗
I used the Kryolan VIVA BRILLIANT COLOR Eyeshadow Palette :)
Won’t your eyeshadow spoil by putting water in it. I mean not directly but the brush has water??
This may happen depending on the formulation of your eyeshadow. If you aren't sure, I recommend testing it at the border of an eyeshadow pan you want to use to create the liner. Or just use a specific shade only for creating eyeshadows :)
will the water ruin the eyeshadow at all?
This depends on your eyeshadow. Some do, whereas others don't.
You can either just use it with water close to the border of the pan so that you still can use the eyeshadow dry or wet depending on what you want to create, or just use a single pan eyeshadow which you only want to use with water.
@@MelissaVanDijkOfficial Okay coolio, thanks!!
when i do this my eyeshadow like,,, beads up? the eyeshadow doesn’t mix with the water...?
Have you tried it only with one shadow/palette? Also, when you try it, please always tried it in a corner or along the boarder of an eyeshadow!
There may be some shadows where it doesn't work, this depends on the formulation of the shadow, but it will work with most...
Melissa Van Dijk ah, almost all my shadows end up doing that hNDNSDN- i have one palate that it works for but i don’t support the brand so i can’t buy it back- idk i guess it depends on what the base of it is hNDNDND-
@@swimminginthestars_ Hm...what a shame!😞I know that it depends on the eyeshadow as you already mentioned, however, I have so many palettes and I've done it at least with one eyeshadow in each palette and never had any issues...🤔
Maybe you are getting your brush too wet
I’m just wondering what the difference between matte and shimmer application was ?….
I just wanted to demonstrate that it can work with both :)
Is this water hot or cold
Cold :)
