Nice video @MetalJesusRocks :D Glad you got a couple nice upgrades there. I am totally with you on modding these older handhelds. Last year I got my Game Boy Color modded with a Game Boy Advance AGS-101 screen installed and the difference was amazing. I also upgraded my Sega Game Gear with the McWill mod and omg I love it!! Sonic looks pretty sweet on it lol
sounds like the BennVenn AGS-101 screen to GBC mod, am I right...? I'm actually the owner of one of his first ever pre-builds of that from mid-2017 (the atomic purple one with red SMD power LED that's in his first build video) but I've barely played on it because of the issues with dust coming in and landing onto the screen itself, and also the console not being able to run my Everdrive GB without shutting off due to the battery consumption. I need to sort out an up-to-date one with him!
@@RWL2012 Doh! Sorry to hear the issues you're having! Yeah, the BennVenn one is exactly what I have. Luckily haven't experienced any issues with it and dust. Don't have an Everdrive so can't test that though.

The crazy thing is, I just got my second Sega Nomad yesterday. It was given to me. And I was talking about modifying it. I was also looking at my Gameboy Colers and thinking I should mod one of them. Keep the other, both gameboy and nomad original. All on the day this video was posted. I'll take it as a sign to move forward with the idea.
So happy to see you still doing videos! Your hard- and software collection is just amazing to look at and your fans and friends are just great for doing such mods and tweaks for ya.
I took on the project of modifying my nomad last year. The cartridge slot freezes sometimes, but it works great. New screen, and a battery recharged inside. Took a little Dremel work to make the batteries fit inside. But it's awesome. Totally worth it. Edit. I can also agree though, the nomad screen replacement isn't very sharp. But still very playable.
Liked your videos as usually! But regarding buying dozens of batteries: ever heard of recharchables? They come in quite handy and are equally eco friendly as modded Li-battery and if you have a couple you can change them on the road when needed
Just recently I was lucky to acquire my very own Sega Nomad at a game store close to my house, after saving up for it by trading in several PS3 games and an old DSi, aming other things. The Nomad had to be sent off somewhere offsite for repairs because of some damage that the LCD screen had on it, and what transpired is that the repairman managed to do what Wes did, which was frankenstein a similarly-sized LCD screen from a GPS monitor, which was a MASSIVE improvment over the original screen, which I was aware of (thanks to a video that Stuart Ashen had about the Nomad), so that saved me time and money having to mod the screen myself. No Li-Io battery in there, but what'cha gonna do? (DC IN can tide me over for a while) Best $130 I have ever spent! Thanks for the video!
I remember a few years back a retro modding company called Rose Colored Gaming did front light mods and custom paint jobs for the GBC, WS, and NGPC. I did grab a final fantasy Wonderswan from them. Such good work. They used the AGS 100 front lite from the SP. Anyway I remember them saying the Neo Geo was the hardest one to do because it had the least amount of space inside the shell despite being the biggest of their handhelds. I’d love to see a backlight NGPC though...
BennVenn is finalizing a backlit NeoGeo Pocket color screen now. There is a guy in Vietnam that charges an exorbitant amount of money to also do a backlit screen mod. Best to wait for the BennVenn option which is coming soon
@@beerusjeebus9876 appreciate it but I guess I haven't looked real well cause I dont see any good mods for battery packs for the gg. I use Energizer 2200 rechargeable and they seem to work fine. Haven't fully tested the playtime yet
@@D.J.283 I think it depends on the mod, with some of the Gameboy mods it is better to use regular batteries or mod in a lithium one. The rechargeable ones, a few cases I've seen and experienced, mess with the light in the screen.
The replacement screen taps into the composite video line hence the blurriness. Those cheap lcd screens only accept composite unlike the other mods like McWill's. Still a huge upgrade from the original!
I have this same Nomad upgrade, and the screen is decent by modern standards, but fantastic compared to what was there before. I wish it had a better resolution match however, that would have helped. As for the battery... there is no way it gets up to 4 hours. Maybe 90 mins at most, maybe. Still, I'm very happy with it. The Nomad, in your hands, feels great - it has a great d-pad, the buttons feel great, and it runs everything like a Genesis model 2 since that's what it is. Nice thing is these never go down in value at this point so I don't mind paying some money for it. Hopefully that battery lasts for a while but apparently it's pretty easy to change down the road when it's out of juice.
My previous comment was just initial excitement. After seeing it I cant resist replacing the screens for my 2 GB colors. I have grape and atomic purple. Cant wait to get some kits in the mail!!
Waiting for Rechargeable Battery mods for Nomad, with New Mega SD Nomad will be great choice to play Genesis on the Go of course if you prefer play it at Original Hardware.
Great vid =D If you want a nice LCD screen for the Neo Geo Pocket - I think SainT over at Retro HQ is producing one! Marco might be working on one too! I've recently covered this Gameboy screen mod on my channel, as well as a Nomad repair and screen replacement too.
Installed a backlight screen mod for my GameBoy Color over the frontlight mod I did several months back. Bought the backlit screen from Handheld Legend for $75, and the price dropped to $50 and has the 3D printed spacers to align the screen properly. I need to get black double sided tape to prevent the light from seeping out, but it works better than the frontlight mod (kept it for a future GBC in case the screen in it doesn't work). I also have a Nomad that was repaired by the person that runs a game store shop that is going to be modded soon, and the Nomad can be modded to allow region unlock and playing Master System games using the Everdrive or Mega SD.
The Nomad's screen being blurry despite higher pixel count is likely because instead of running through the internal digital output from the processor/GPU itself, so it gets a 1:1 pixel mapping (like the GBC mod does, tho that's 2:1) before going to the analog output converter, it takes that composite output from the console and then converts it back on the screen, so yeah you would see pretty much how it looks on a modern LCD without anything else than plugging the console to the TV on composite.
The Nomad was the truth back in the day. My older brother got one, and it was mind blowing. We didn’t know anything about the screen being weak, when we showed it to friends, it was like showing a lighter to a caveman. Yes, the battery life was bad, and you had to carry bigass genesis cartridges, but damn, it sure was cool. I dig these mods though.
Call me old fashioned but I like to play mine with orginal screens how they were meant to be played in the day. I know. The new screens are awesome, I agree, they are very tempting but I will keep mine original. But nice to see as well.

@@LaurenceReeves If it was specifically designed for the GBC then it would not have those edges around the screen and an option to display on your TV. @@LaurenceReeves Well what he said does make sense. The parts are insanely cheap to use/produce. @@rubino7 it's certainly made for that, they just used already ingeneered boards, adapted them and added an lcd screen without even doing too much work. So yeah, the price is too high, but that's not the problem, i would never do that mod if i lost my screen real estate, i mean come on, that screen is already very small.
The SEGA Nomad screen mod is SICK!! I will definitely be trying that out. I’m kinda curious where he got the lithium ion battery at so I could get that too. Great video! 😀
Did you forget about the Turbo Express? That came out five years before the nomad and played TG16 games on a portable console that was a little bit bigger than the size of the original gameboy...
Never heard of Sega Nomad, I grew up playing the Gameboy color, the Nomad looks very interesting but for it size it would of been interesting if they would make it so you can hide the cartridge, awesome video🤘
You do realize it plays regular Sega Genesis/Megadrive game cartridges, right? The amount of effort and redesign just to hide the cartridge would be both ridiculous and stupid. Why does it even need to be hidden?
I remember when they said a Game Boy Color will never be able to have a backlight. That was only like 3 years ago, and now there are many ways to get a backlit GBC.
Having a replacement screen that matches or is an exact 2x (or possibly 3x/4x...or slightly larger, but adjusted to black out the extra lines) match to the original is important to keep odd pixel artifacting. That's why a lot of newer handheld emulation devices kinda suck...many of them just don't care and let it display how it displays on the cheapest screen they could buy in bulk.
@@emanueleperagallo9864 Nope, all it does is go over the original screen so you don't lose out on anything. Looks great especially with the Loca applied
If it's more or less half of your 90s TV res, it's not upskaling but downscaling. Thus I think it's normal that some info disappears from the fonts. In any case, myep pretty nice job, it looks way better than on the original ones.
The great thing about the original game boy color screen is that it forces me to go outside and it looks much better than my smart phone in direct sunlight. It looks amazing if I'm playing on the beach. How does this back-lit screen do in direct sunlight?
There is enough retro love around that if Sega decided to rerelease the Nomad and Game Gear just with modern screen technology they would likely sell well. Especially if you could use regular batteries or lithium ion packs in the battery compartments.

Production costs are really nothing, just look at the PCB factories in China.
Regrats from Costa Rica!
The screens look amazing!
I got my Nomad modded with an LCD and it was well worth it.
NEC did it even earlier with their PCEngine GT/Turbo Express handheld😊
Great vid, Great shirt! Thanks for the vid👍
i hope you realize your a lucky bastard with all your gaming stuff. hope you play everything mane
Nice Opeth T-Shirt
Cool video Jason!
I remember when they said a Game Boy Color will never be able to have a backlight. That was only like 3 years ago, and now there are many ways to get a backlit GBC.
That looks so cool 😎 those gamses look great for old games wish nintendo done this back in the day
Crosscore is actually Super Airwolf in japan :) these mods really look amazing, great video showcasing the new screens 👍
I got my Nomad screen replaced a few years ago amf it looks fantastic but I really want the lithium ion battery mod! How expensive/ difficult was it?
Glad got my Sega nomad mod screen
I just finished my front light mod w/ Loca for my GBC the other day. I think I'll have to try the new screen on a second gameboy. Looks badass
did u lose screen real estate with the front light mod?
I see u lose a lot with that screen
@@emanueleperagallo9864 Nope, all it does is go over the original screen so you don't lose out on anything. Looks great especially with the Loca applied
Metal Jesus never pays. 💰
Awesome video! Great screen mods!
If it's more or less half of your 90s TV res, it's not upskaling but downscaling. Thus I think it's normal that some info disappears from the fonts. In any case, myep pretty nice job, it looks way better than on the original ones.
My partner really wants the Sega Nomad so seeing this reminded me of it haha
They're cool to collect, not so much fun to play on.
Those screens are dope.
My little sister got her name from a character on the TV show AIRWOLF lol
Thanks for sharing and as always keep building👍
Time to slap a RGBDRV in that Nomad and LCD IPS in that sweet NGPC man! Have fun :)
The thing about modding the Nomad. If it wasn’t so uncommon and hard to come by I would totally be down to mod it.
Great video as always dude!!! Saludos desde Buenos Aires Argentina
I'm programming a 3D Zelda Ocarina of Time for the GBA! I posted Minecraft already.
3DSage you won't finish it.
@@natsyrte Correct it will be just Kokiri forest. The gba doesnt have enough memory or cpu power for the whole game but still i want it push it as far a i can
I actually prefer AA batteries over proprietary Lithium packs because I know years from now I can still find them.
