Thank you for this analysis. I think, as you mention during the video, the key word is "regret". This is a song of regret and of being haunted by a bad experience with love. And, as you also said, the different uses of "take me back to the night we met" illustrate both 1. the author's wish to escape future pain by changing history and not getting involved in the relationship and 2. reliving the euphoria of those first electric moments of feeling he had for this new person. The juxtaposition of those two different interpretations of that line is stark. After all, for those of us who have been through break-ups --- who has not had a hard time reconciling the wish to have never met the person with the nostalgia of discovering new love?
"I am not the only traveler, who has not repaid his debt" I think this is referring to his life path. His debt is a karmic guilt he feels he still needs to pay. "Searching for a path to follow...again" She gave him purpose, and now he feels lost, without purpose. "Take me back to the night we met/ and then i can tell myself what the hell I'm supposed to do/ and then i can tell myself not to ride along with you" He wants to go back to when they met and make different choices, knowing what he now knows. The word "ride" stands out. She was his "ride or die", or he was her ride or die. He ends up pushing her away. They end up breaking up. If she ends up unaliving herself... the lines take on a duality of meanings in both past and present. The night filled with terrors..where she was crying, suggests she was in a bad way, but not because of him. Im thinking she had just broken up with someone, and he was a rebound. She may have been contemplating suicide...as he's doing now. He's looking to go back to the night they met...so his old self can tell him what to do...and not follow the path shes taken. "So i can tell myself what the hell i AM supposed to do" those lines are present tense, not past tense. Well...THAT took a dark turn :-|
