Nice to hear about your experiences! Tbh I think a huge part of what people will pay is down to location as well. We have worked hard at our craft and we have enough confidence in ourselves to say our showreel shows we are worth at least £2,000 per wedding, but people are so cheap here in the South of the UK that they want you to do a £3,000 package for like only £300. It's so frustrating.

Haha jumping on this train 9 months later... yeah. Trust me, it's not just a south UK thing. I'm in the USA and people balk at a $2,000 quote for a 4-6 minute wedding film. We've had success sticking to our guns, but it's frustrating when you're really taking your business seriously (obviously, we don't just do weddings, but still), investing in WAY better equipment than your average wedding filmmaker (Sony Cinema Line stuff, etc.), and folks don't want to pay you for it.

I'm in my 4th year of building my video company. I do most of it solo bringing in other freelancers. First year was about $15k, second year was $30k, last year was $20k (thanks Covid) and this year I'm aiming to hit $40k. My best path to success has been building referrals with weddings (wedding shows are a waste of money unless you're massively good at hard selling), and commercially my biggest success has been building partnerships with marketing companies and website developers to have them sell to their clients for a commission and I fulfill the orders. Those are really what I've been working on since the pandemic started and it's starting to bear some fruit. Partnerships are key, especially if you're not big into the sales process yourself.
I still undervalue my time quite a lot. I'm starting to turn down the penny pinching clients. Had a few last year that just sucked the life out of me and really broke me of accepting the penny pinchers.

Epidemic is very cool, no doubt. Another great site, though kinda limited as far as content goes (only in an overall way) is Duende Sounds. They have a really good variety of songs available, but their true bonus is the way you can take pieces of the songs in your purchased products and use the separate parts of the compiled full versions and use them to create your own audio tracks, or use them to create fillers here and there. And there are unlimited ways to put them together, since everything is in the same key, to just drag-and-drop them into your audio timeline as highlighting effects for specific moments in your vids.
I really like them, but you have to choose which bundles you want kinda carefully; some bundles seem less useful than others as far as universal usefulness is concerned. PLUS, you do only have so many songs and 'stems' to choose from in each bundle, but it's only limited by your creativity. I took a percussion stem from a song and did an intro into the vocal track from the same song, then followed up by adding the full song and it worked out great! I have the "Evince" and "Widescreen Cinematic" bundles and they're very useful. Check them out.

This was such a timely video. I’m exactly where you guys were at during the start. I have a wedding or two under my belt and a few other projects, but trying to get momentum both as a freelancer and as a RUclipsr. Appreciate the advice! Also, I’d I also went to Bible college and then returned for my Mdiv. Would love to hear about that part of your life at some point!

The only dabble I had with wedding videos was shooting Steadicam for a company in Woodbridge. It was great, I told the company I hate shooting weddings so I gave them a crazy high price and they still hired me because I delivered on all my shots and was a decent person. Those days were great walking away at the end of the night with a pocket full of cash and a full belly lol.

I think sometimes it depends on the demographic of where you establish your filmmaking business, for example the filmmaking industry in the US and Canada is 50 times bigger than the rest of the world, compare to Europe. Only maybe in London the filmmaking business make sense in europe...

I want to go freelance, but it's always that thing in the back of my head. "Am I good enough?" I've been learn from scratch and building a portfolio on RUclips for 3 years. One day soon i'll make the jump and approach a business!

One way to start to build your reel when you're first starting out is to do commercials. Very few establishments will reject an advertisement of their business, especially when it so willingly comes to them, and is done for free.

So here's a question. During the video you mentioned that you and your brother knew nothing about film making in or around 2008. You then say you both consumed all the tutorials and it started to come together. 2 years from now I have a huge event coming up in my life, my wife and I are moving to a different country (Scotland to Spain) Now I know absolutely zero about film making and I have started to watch videos made by a couple who have already made the same move we are going to make. But their videos are just filled with "here's us swanning around the beach all day" when I think they have missed a fantastic opportunity to make a series of videos about the experience. The move itself, the legal side of moving to another country, day to day life, getting a bus, train etc and just fill it with a ton of useful information. There's also the fact I'm having my mid-life crisis moment and would love to film myself training for an Ironman (even though I'm already 54 yrs old and have never done ANY triathlon distance in my life) So the question I guess is "What IS the best way to learn film making? Just going out and shooting something will have it's merits but what to do with the stuff you've shot? Editing etc?? Any answers would be great. Liked the video, hope you all stay safe.

Honestly, of all the things that I've seen the two of you do over the course of your respective RUclips journeys, your inline skating skills are the most inspiring yet. Your confidence and competence shine through in your skating. Did you find that the discipline and dedication to mastering inline skating transfer over to mastering photography and videography? I would love to hear if there was any cross-pollination from one to the other in your opinions. I think it would be fascinating to hear your skating origin stories. Great video today.

Helpful vid, hope it does well! I feel like you really enjoy bridging the cinematography, business planning, and finance arenas and think you are positioned to do it better than most in the space, even beyond just the success story of your own journy! Very much enjoy these practical vids :-)
And deja vu on the roller blading from Teppo's channel- can't decide which sequence was more fun!! I see an opportunity from "who did it better" contest vids (like Matti did a few times with Peter) to both grow Teppo's channel even more rapidly and just generally foster fun content that highlights each distinctive style in a playful way and showcases how there are infinite ways to make something great out of the same occasion... but that's just one idea!
P.S. taking a deep dive into Matti's old vids now that I'm really committing to honing the premiere chops. Still timelessly helpful, but the evolution over the years is so fantastic and inspiring for someone who endeavors to carve a path himself (also, Teppo's Finnish home vids are loads of fun- I wish we ALL had saunas 😄).

all of your tips were pretty much exactly what I have been doing with my wedding videos. I was thinking them before you said them because they're so true and right! I had to do so many free ones to build a portfolio and even did my first wedding not knowing what I was doing but like you said, I faked it till I made it haha just takes lots of hard work.
