I am autistic myself and I like to use head phones to listen to music to comfort me in public but I would never expect an entire room to be quiet so I am less anxious. It's just something we have to look for solututions that don't negatively impact everyone else. I agree with you.

Like him or hate him, Cenk does know politics and strategy very well. Asking a large room to bend over backwards - to limit their talking interactions or to monitor their speech habits to not refer to a group of people as "guys" - is extremely selfish. We are already trying to ask people to sacrifice the use of plastics and fossil fuels to fight climate change and environmental issues, we are asking the rich to pitch in more on taxes, we are asking people to give single payer healthcare a chance; those are LIFE and DEATH issues, lets focus our energy on those things, and when all those life and death issues are solved , then we can start discussing how to accommodate for people with crowd sound sensitivities or people that have issues with usage of gender pronouns

I have diagnosed “hyper sensitivity” my nervous system overreacts to external stimuli (or lack of) and have experienced ‘sensory overload’
It’s a neurological problem that is no ones fault but my body. My brain and body are sick. The normal neurological response is not there. I can reasonably expect stimulus, and know what to avoid, and when in situations triggering it, knowing that if I go to the back of the room, the spinning effect will diminished.
I have no reasonable assumption to others knowing this, let alone changing their behavior on my behalf when they are not taking any direct action to me. It is after all. A crowd. It’s people existing. I can hear the smallest sounds, that doesn’t mean I get to get frustrated at another person breathing.
NOW, I’ve had some waiters just constantly grab me? Even after I ask not to be touched. That. Just stop.

Spot on! I have Aspergers and struggle with large noisy crowds, I plan ahead and make sure I have a means of ‘escape’, I don’t expect others in the crowd to modify their behaviour to suit me.

Seeing this discussion occur at a DSA meeting is infuriating. This is literally the exact right wing fantasy and stereotype of who we are and what we devote our energies to. "I bet at their meetings, all they talk about is gender pronouns... heh, snowflakes!" If someone had showed me this clip and told me it was a parody clip made for a right wing 'comedy' show, I would have believed it for a minute. If we on the left allow the right wing to succeed, in turning a discussion of economic justice into a discussion of who is allowed to use which gender pronouns, we get our ass kicked every time. We have the issues on OUR side, and the American people agree with us on the ISSUES. If we grow a little thicker skin, and figure out how to cut through the distractions, the bullshit, we don't allow them to derail the discussion with bullshit related to pronouns and micro-aggressions... and we WIN in a landslide every time. This is our task.

As someone who also faces sensory overload issues I have to say there are precautions we have to take. I wouldn't go to a large event like this because I don't like touching people, even accidentally brushing up against someone, and I can't stand a lot of random noise or harsh lights.
I understand when this discussion is about shops (like having quiet hour once a week where they dim the lights), but this is silly. Just know where is and isn't going to overload you.

as someone who has sensory overload issues and prefers gender neutral pronouns I still totally agree with Ana and TYT. If A bothers one person, then you can't assume not-A doesn't bother someone else just as much. My common example is someone who needs a service dog and someone who is anaphylacticly allergic to dogs will have a problem when both want to share an elevator.
Accommodations should be made were possible, but things have gone WAAAAY to far.

I’m actually a highly sensitive person, so I know the feeling of having sensory overload and it isn’t nice. However, if I decide to attend an event like this, I’m gonna make sure I’m prepared and take earplugs or can step outside when I feel like I’m gonna get overwhelmed. My challenges shouldn’t hinder the movement I am part of. After all, what kind of revolution is gonna come about by sitting quietly?
Imagine going to a concert, jumping up on stage and saying "excuse me guys, I'm getting some sensory overload, could you please keep cheering to a minimum? Also, turn the music down a bit. Point of personal privilege please." Lol, the entitlement.

Sensory overload is a symptom of some serious illnesses and disabilities, not just being a bit of an introvert, proper pain. I don't know the answer to being able to participate in something like that with this problem, generally people avoid situations that are difficult completely

I have a similar issue regarding odors. I can't use public transit in the morning because of the perfumes, colognes, etc. At NO point would I suggest they should be banned.
My problem. I deal with it.
@Nicolaus Volentius It would probably help, yes. In my case it's a minor allergy: I also get itchy/red eyes (I suppose swimming goggles?)
My solution has been simply to avoid situations and plan escapes (like on elevators). I manage.
That said, the point still is: it's my problem to deal with. I wouldn't expect the rest of the world to accommodate my situation.

I also suffer from sensory overload. However, I just leave the room and give myself a break or if I really think it is going to be too much, I don't put myself in that situation. I don't expect others to cater to me. That is one of the problems of this society, we are not taking responsibility for ourselves, we are expecting society to! This is so fantastic. Ana has her finger on the pulse, here. Twitter is an echo chamber of self-importance and it is an absolute cesspool. It doesn't exist to promote truth or educated discourse but combats it with the arrogance of a pigeon trapped in a warehouse. It's 280 characters of trite humor, mindless retweets, and the most active among the users are the ones that embody the bargain-basement, me-centric crap that should frankly embarrass the rest of us. Case in point, who loves Twitter more than any other person?

My comment was aimed at my overall feelings around Twitter based on not only personal experience but actual studies which I'd encourage anyone interested to look into. The Washington Post actually wrote an interesting one in May covering research that indicates Twitter is not only bad for your mental health but makes you less intelligent. Catering to our 15 second attention span does not help thoughtful discourse so, as I said, it doesn't surprise me that Donald Trump spends so much time using it. I wasn't drawing a comparison between commentary on any other platform and didn't intend for what I said to come off that way.
@@commonsii6075 Any time there is an open forum you're bound to find varying degrees of uninformed discourse ranging from outright lies to, more subtly, personal attacks (the latter of which I find most troubling because they don't further a conversation, make it easy for people to stop thinking and start arguing with their emotions, and worse, because its the default mode for people who can't actually argue a cogent point). I suppose my overall concern is the idea that misinformation is put on the same playing field as discourse from those that do know what they're talking about. Twitter is a prime example but any comments section and even broadcast media suffer from this problem.
