Hi friends, thanks so much for the overwhelming support on this animation! Here are some corrections to the original video: •The name of the pilot is presented as ‘Laurier’ owing to several newspaper misprints - but was actually ‘Bernier’. •Second Officer Williams more likely, was sucked down the barrel of funnel no.1 rather than 2 after the Empress turned over.
I dont even know where to begin, the level of detail on this is absolutely unreal. MASSIVE CONGRATS FOR PUTTING THIS TOGETHER! One of the best sinking animations on youtube. PERIOD!
Wow this was one of the real time sinking videos where I truly felt terrified watching every moment. Seeing the reactions of the passengers to the claustrophobic interior shots of water filling rooms, hallways and stairwells was something I have not seen before in other animations. You really felt like you were there among the chaos. Even from the first shot of the video I was blown away from perspectives you don't usually get to see. In watching this video you hope things won't go as bad as you think they will but it was wild to see the level of destruction and chaos this sinking had and how things perpetually got worse, it was truly horrific. Another thing that hit home was seeing the names scrolling at the end of the victims that went on for 20 minutes. It was staggering seeing the loss of life in this sinking. Thank you for an absolutely amazing video and covering a sinking that is not very well known as well as highlighting the truly horrendous way it sank and the things that people went through that tragic night.
Thank you so much, I truly appreciate your incredibly kind words!! I am incredibly glad that the simulation was able to evoke such a deep sense of feeling for you. The story of the Empress is an absolutely terrifying one, and I REALLY wanted to capture that immense sense of dread during the sinking. Thanks so much for the kind words, and for watching!
I am reminded of Grace Hanagan, one of only 3 children who survived the sinking, who's interview is here on RUclips. At 88 years old (at the time of filming), she still cries as she remembers her mother and father telling her to be brave as they clung to the railing and went under. Her mother and father died, her father was recovered in a Toronto mortuary. She was from very near my home town, Oshawa ON, and was the same age as my great grandparents. Such a tragic and forgotten disaster. Her mother was never found. They were travelling on a Salvation Army trip.
I would be lying if I didn’t admit that this particular interview is one that I personally struggle to get through. I am always overwhelmed with such emotion, and sadness as I listen to her words. It is complicated for one to really wrap their head around this tragedy, and understand that this really happened - and that 1,477 lives, whether they lived or not, would never be the same again.
This has to be the best sinking ship real time animation I have ever watched! The quality, A prologue, showing the passengers and crew prior to the sinking, showing the interiors as the collision happened, voice lines (I heard some voices in some other real time sinking animations but the ones I heard here were great), Some stuff I saw in the video that I didn’t knew happened (like a lifeboat filled with people being crushed by the second funnel as it capsized), the people’s animations, showing passengers in the collision hole as the cargo ship pulled away from it, showing passengers and crew in the ship during the sinking trying to get up to deck, the aftermath and the wreck after the sinking with debris and people laying on the ocean floor. You did an amazing job with this animation! One thing I’m curious and excited about is what will be your next real time sinking animation, cause I would like to see how would you do one for a Lusitania sinking animation.
Wow! First of all, I truly couldn’t thank you enough for these wonderful compliments, it means a lot to me! 😄 Thank you so very much!! Lusitania is definitely something that’s on the table for the future! I am not sure when, but it’s definitely something I will do. I’m thinking that the next animation will be of something a little more obscure. 🤔 We will see! 😄
This surpasses any Real Time animation that has come before. The sheer graphic detail is incredible, from the elaborate destruction as Storstad rips through hull plates and cabins to the visuals inside the engine room as the current rips her free, and the scope and scale is only added to by the inclusion of animated and colored figures, which give a real humanization to the events that previous films showing empty rooms or uncolored, unmoving figures just can't match. The different shots of the ship as it goes under are deeply haunting, ESPECIALLY those of her hitting the bottom and showing that, even after she sank completely, there were still people alive inside...however briefly. I don't think i've seen ANYONE detail that particular horror. 100/10, spectacular job.
This is the next best thing to the movie that doesn't exist. Thank you for giving us the experience in such great graphic detail. If you make any changes it would be fantastic if there was a narrator reading the captions you provided on the bottom of the screen. Other than my suggestion cause I had a hard time reading the captions on my android. Looking forward to watching this on the big screen TV I'm sure the text will be a lot easier to see. Thank you again for a great experience. My aunt Helen told me all about the experience. Your productions add a realistic graphic element to their story on a regular crossing.
@@duanebarbic3786 thank you very much for your incredibly kind words! If there is one shipwreck that deserves to have a movie made about it; it is for sure the Empress. Incredible work, Liam. I cried watching this. Beautiful cinematography mixed with the harrowing visuals. The interior collision was perfect, the airpockets filling after she was under... Amazingly well done, mate. This is the best real time sinking animation I’ve seen in a while. Empress of Ireland is my second favorite ocean liner so I am glad you did this one.

Bravo, Sir.
This is an exceptional telling. Really defines the horror of what those passengers and crew went through that night. This is the most detailed animation so far. Great stuff.

Terrifying with all the interior shots of the collision and sinking, was actually really disturbing... everything in this was masterfully done. Amazing work Liam.
I didn’t even think about the air pockets. With Titanic it was different because the pressure got to a certain point where it imploded and it was just lights out for people. But knowing people went down with the Empress and were probably still alive, even if just for a few minutes, is sickening.
Well not imploding and implosion requires a sudden collapse inwards of the structure, but the fast descending speed made water rip the stern apart, possibily killing the people with the strong current
An absolutely Masterpiece! Its the first time a Sinking Animation really showed the Horrors that the Passengers lifed trough. I've watched a whole bunch of real time empress sinkings, But none of them compare to this, This is incredibly detailed and Tells the story like none other, Great work man honestly
As the Storatad collided with the Empress, Kendall ordered the engines to be brought to a full stop and called the engine room ordering the Chief Engineer to close the watertight doors which were all operated by hand. But already the Empress was lost. The ship's list kept increasing under the weight of the water that flowed into her wound.
Thank you so much Liam! This is just wonderfully made. I went to Father Point last March and it was the most emotional experience of my life, I keep thinking of it even now.
@ Seing the portholes and the windows is the part that touched me the most. To know that people were on the other side and couldn’t escape gave me chills.
This is going to sound insensitive, but I'd rather have been a passenger on Titanic than Empress. Hypothermia seems less terrible than getting sucked into a funnel or drowning by being trapped in a small stateroom. None of the lifeboats fell or crushed passengers. Because of the length of time Titanic had, distress signals got sent out with coordinates (even if they were not accurate.) Fewer people were trapped in steerage, and I don't think any staircases collapsed under weight. The ship didn't capsize, watertight doors were shut (and automatically). Of course the Titanic had punctures in its hull, not a huge hole like Empress, but because of this it didn't sink nearly as quickly, and nearly all the lifeboats were deployed because of how small the list was.
I believe that a quote from Titanic and Empress of Ireland survivor William Clarke puts it well “Waiting around for the end was the hard part on Titanic; there was no waiting with the Empress … she rolled over like a hog in a ditch”
It’s truly sad to see that so many people lost their lives on that day and the crew tried everything they could even sacrificing themselves just to try to close the watertight doors and slow the sinking
I am completely speechless. I have known about the empress for a long time, but I have never seen it in so much detail before. This video really makes me grasp how terrifying the sinking was in reality. Most amazing real time animation I've seen anywhere. Thank you for making this Liam.

Wow this very well done and very epic and unique. And did you all know there was a man on The Empress Of Ireland who was also on the Titanic a year early.
While the famous ones are always interesting, bringing a spotlight to some of the other, many lost liners of the late-19th and early-20th centuries (let alone those in the two World Wars) would be a welcome addition to the community!
32:17 That is a terrifying way to go trapped in a rapidly flooding airpocket with no way out. I can't begin to imagine the horror those poor people went through in those awful 14 minutes. Only for many to suffer for even longer in the freezing water.😢
Jeez Louise! the credits were so long! But at least they were dedicated to the people that all died a gruesome death. Rest In Peace. Btw, this is probably the definitive Empress of Ireland video, rivaling Michael Brady's Documentary.
Seeing this was like seeing a movie. The modeling was perfect and very high quality. It just makes me sick to my stomach to think about how tragic this sinking was. The collision, the panic, the ship rolling onto its side and people trying to escape out of the portholes but some can't. I can't imagine how terrifying it would be knowing you're stuck in a porthole while the ship is sinking around you, and you getting dragged under. This disaster may not have as many deaths as the titanic, but it is sure a lot more terrifying if you think about the details of the sinking.
An excerpt from the final hymn played by the Salvation Army Band as the Empress departed. The words are poignant. _God be with you till we meet again;_ _When life's perils thick confound you,_ _Put His arms unfailing round you._ _God be with you till we meet again._ Chorus _Till we meet, till we meet,_ _till we meet at Jesus' feet._ _Till we meet, till we meet,_ _God be with you till we meet again._
This is BY FAR the best real time sinking animation I’ve ever seen. Think you can do the battleship Yamato sinking animation like this one? I just can’t find a good one other than movie scenes.
I do think that since The Empress's engines were ordered to full speed just before th collision, I do feel like that may have contributed to the two ships separating, had Storstad stayed lodged in her side, the Empress would not have sunk
This version is the first where you can truly notice the scale of the hole that the Storstad cut into the Empress of Ireland. Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but it is a shame that the Storstad captain turns to Starboard at the last minute. That meant they hit the Empress almost dead centre, the worst possible place. Instantly killing her power plant. It is also a shame that the Empress wasn't sat with her watertight doors all closed. You would think it standard operating practice by this point in time.
I believe Canadian Pacific Railway (the owner of the Empress of Ireland) did order that all watertight doors be closed when sailing in bad weather. So, why Captain Kendall did not follow that order is unclear. Oh. One more thing. Captain Anderson of the Storstad had not been on the bridge when the ships first spotted each other. He was asked to return to the bridge by the first mate, who he had left in command, after the fog had rolled in. So, Captain Anderson was 100% relying on his first mate for information about the whereabouts of this other ship. The first and only time Captain Anderson actually saw the Empress of Ireland was a minute before the collision
The very final song (in case anyone else is curious too!) at the very end is the piece “Where’er You Walk” slowed, and with slight reverb 🙂 The section I used is the very end of the song
What happens is that it sank quickly through the portholes and had the boiler rooms divided into port and starboard compartments, when the ship flooded it altered the center of gravity and added to the open portholes (to ventilate the ship in port) plus the failure of the watertight doors of the Empress of Ireland that in order to close them they had to close them manually and not automatically as in the case of the RMS Titanic that when it sank the watertight doors being automated could be closed from the bridge of the Titanic and prolonging the sinking to 2 hours 40 minutes otherwise with the manual watertight doors the Titanic would have sunk in less than 1 hour or half an hour after the collision, if the portholes had been closed when setting sail the Empress of Ireland could have taken a little longer to sink

I Got goosebumps, well done. and brought tears to my eyes too..
wow great animation, well done
Wow, just an incredible piece of work.
The 4 children that survived were:
Josephine O’Hara, 10
Florence Barbour, 8
Gracie Hanagan, 7
Arvo Markkula, 14
The story, the looks, the interior, the people moving arms and legs, the furniture and physics. Amazing. How long did it took to animate and render ?
Took 8 months in total to animate and render this project out. This project was a work in progress since April 2024 🙂
An absolutely incredible work, Liam!
The best Ship video ever made.
This is animation is so awesome. 🔥
This look like a movie
Wow that was horrific, makes titanic look like a cakewalk - this is absolutely incredible work though
Incredible work, Liam
An excerpt from the final hymn played by the Salvation Army Band as the Empress departed. The words are poignant.
_God be with you till we meet again;_
_When life's perils thick confound you,_
_Put His arms unfailing round you._
_God be with you till we meet again._
Chorus
_Till we meet, till we meet,_
_till we meet at Jesus' feet._
_Till we meet, till we meet,_
_God be with you till we meet again._
This is BY FAR the best real time sinking animation I’ve ever seen.
Think you can do the battleship Yamato sinking animation like this one?
I just can’t find a good one other than movie scenes.
Yamato is actually something I’ve considered in the past! Very, very interesting ship
@ if your able it would be most interesting.
Damn, that was good! And incredibly terrifying.
I do think that since The Empress's engines were ordered to full speed just before th collision, I do feel like that may have contributed to the two ships separating, had Storstad stayed lodged in her side, the Empress would not have sunk
38:44 Laurence Irving held on to his wife, and a famous couple perished in a final embrace, may they both rest in peace. 🙏
Superb piece of work. Utterly harrowing. I must ask, what is the piece of music at the end? It’s superb.
It’s in the credits as I watch this! 😅 ignore the question! 😂
The very final song (in case anyone else is curious too!) at the very end is the piece “Where’er You Walk” slowed, and with slight reverb 🙂 The section I used is the very end of the song
The helplessness of this is one of the most pitiful things I've ever witnessed...
Congratulations! I love it very much!
@@Gamex99999 thank you so very much!
32:18 that must have been horrifying.
