Hello Dean, I just want to say that I appreciate you trying to update and enhance this mod. Do consider the constructive criticism here especially about the HUD messages. Seeing the health status of NPC's that you aim at is unnecessary in Half-Life since wounded NPC's typically vocalize their status. The weapon swapping notification could be moved away from the center, either low or off to the side of the screen. Regardless, you putting in the work on those maps is most important and I'm sure we're all grateful.
Brother, this mod has just highly atrocious level designee and that is about it. Authors forgot that long empty liminal spaces and gigantism without proper details do not make for good video game levels/maps.
and the animation from 17:30 I think are the german version of Death animation for ether CS or HL1. (remmber the german version of HL1 had robots instead of human grunts).
Fun fact: vorts reviving other vorts was planned for half life 1 so is vorts running away for dead vorts paradoxically Maybe like how the assassins become invisible on hard mode vorts could revive fallen comrades Meanwhile on easy mode they would run away
I honestly prefer the Black Mesa remake version of Azure Sheep, cause it keeps things lore friendly and doesn't contradict with the continuity too much.

I feel like Gordon talking in a half-life mod made before half-life 2 is a lot less of a sin than Gordon talking in a mod made now, mostly because the goldsouce games have several implications that the player character does talk throughout the game but the player can't hear the current protagonist they are playing. Example: The Half-Life manual and Blue Shift with B. Calhoun's unheard questions and responses to Rosenberg and the captive scientists being implied through their dialogue. Gordon asking characters to follow him or stay put could be taken as him talking to them but it could also be gestured. Half-Life 2 is what firmly made Gordon a mute in my opinion, based on Alyx's dialogue about Gordon being a "man of few words".
the reason for shepard and the HECU with him teaming up with the scientist is explained in Opposing force tought , its because their transports transporting shepard unit were shot down before they got their full order , so they never got the order to kill black mesa personnel
Azure sheep was one of the first hl mods I knew about and my favorite hl1 mod, It took me years to actually play it. I even spend endless hours going across the entire campaign spawning npcs here and there as I noclip from the first to the final map, map by map, and then go all the way back to the first map, map by map, and start playing it with the npcs I added. It was a long and hard process but it paid off,now I can do it easily with bspguy. In fact, I even mergedboth azure sheep and blue shift in one private mod with opfor elements. Wish I can find way to share more some of my work. Overall, Azure Sheep is a golden masterpiece.
I played this as a teenager and really liked it, but played it with a friend on Sven Coop this year and aged terribly due to those long corridors (It's also missing a lot of these details i'm seeing)
I always like to think that whenever Gordon Freeman goes out of character, we are looking at his twin brother John Freeman instead, facing full life consequences.
The special forces gun at 16:10 is a pulse rife from the Aliens movie. Not only the model but the sound... can't really decide if its just an homage and they modeled it or they just ripped the model from an Alien game.
The M41A model was originally made as a drop-in MP5 replacement. Another mod that used it also included the creator's readme file, which talks about how the model was made but unfortunately doesn't seem to include the creator's name. It also has a note that basically says "I put the ammo counter on the wrong side on purpose, don't @ me." Azure Sheep changed the standard HEV hands to Barney HEV ones, of course, and also changed the original model's brown shroud texture to gray for some reason.
Something to clear out for the moment when you meet Shephard, according to timeline of Azure Sheep, you meet Shephard right after gman send him in the stasis and then vorts take him and you can say free him from gman hands.
@@1lucia As far as i am aware the vortigaunts derailed shephard osprey after gman left him in the void and from there on the osprey took him back in black mesa
The cut Freeman death is "not canon" to Decay cause the game ends at the rocket launch, which is before the events of Apprehension. And yeah I hope they go back to BM Azure Sheep eventually, especially since Azure Sheep's latter half is ripe for expansion even more so than what they already did to the former half.
tbh gordon talking isnt bad, the real reason he doesnt talk in the games is because hes supposed to be a blank slate for the player to insert themselves into. your reactions and random babbling are his. if he was just an npc in the games he would probably still talk because he isnt the edgy gigachad mute scientist, he is you. this also goes for barney and adrian, barney in blue shift doesnt talk bc you are him but in hl2 and even in the og hl1 he talks, because in those games you dont control him so there is no need for him to be a blank slate.

Hope to see the next HL1 mod to be about the very odd, unique, bizarre, korean made Residual Point and Residual Life! Clearly even to this day there's still misteries surrounding this mod about its story, and several clever easter eggs laid around, that so far, only a single individual, a french user called DarkShift. Video is still as high quality as the rest, i sure do hope you get around to talk about this mod(s)!

Hell it even went a little onto a own universe of its own with having the Xen and Combine lore somewhat changed for some kind of sun? And really this mod takes inspirations of other forms of media rather then just Half-life.

To steal the power of an entire star for your civilisation, to devour the Sun. There's a lot more occult/esoteric/magic symbolism in the saga (As well as drawing influence from the Laidlaw books, Gadget and Third Force, which I am really tempted to read just to understand the mod better)
You are incorrect in assuming that the cutscenes show Barney wearing a HEV suit after discovering one, as in both the endings of Azure Sheep and Point of View, Barney's model wears a vest rather than a suit if you look closer. 20:19 and 21:11.
The "M4A1" you obtain from the Spec Ops guys is actually the M41A Pulse Rifle from Aliens with it's firing sound feeling a lot like a mix between the Pulse Rifle and the Smartgun.
I wish you mentioned how you can just like not pick up the pool cue? It's not mandatory to start Chapter 2 it's so funny you can like actually just miss it entirely and assume this game doesn't have a melee weapon
ive played azure sheep a while back and i gotta say it's a really cool mod! sure some parts are a little weird such as just barney surviving the first black ops section, but i do find it really fun in a sort of fan fiction way. good stuff overall!
Azure Sheep was a ahead of it's time as a Half Life mod. It was a time when not everyone could make a mod that was more than... customs single players maps. It was indeed a technological improvement and an important pillar in the half life modding community. However as a Half Life game it totally lacks the consistency that official expansions have, it's expected to be so, it's a mod after all. However most of the mods that are proposing to fit as much as they can into the original storyline usually do. This one does not, it departs too much from the our understanding of the Black Mesa Incident. Not only because this Just Barney meets Gordon Freeman and does his fight for him against the assassin girls. Now there are Blue HEV Security units, which doesn't make much sense as the HEV is only but a protective suit for experiments and out of the world walks, not a battleready armor, although it can also function like that. In Opposing Force we've met the Black Ops, in this mod somehow these "Special Forces" loyal only to G-man exist to fill that role. Some of them have black HEVs, they also seem to work with the assassin girls. What are they doing? Oh yeah they are making experiments on scientists which is also a dumb idea... why just why. Somehow they also seem to have captured 2 panther eyes for Just Barney and Xonxt to fight. One of the overhaul mods makes some justice by applying the Aperature Science logo on their backs. The level design is also not that great over all the duration of the game. There are indeed some parts which are very nicely done but only some parts. Overall it's a great mod and i appreaciate the work but it's far from being the best one. Sometimes it's just better to have some nicely designed maps that make a lot of sense and fit together with the atmosphere of the original game than lots and lots of new weapons and enemies.
(Valve didn't create Opposing Force and Blue Shift by the way. Gearbox Did (the studio later responsible for Borderlands. ... and the final release of Duke Nukem Forever ... and Aliens: Colonial Marines.) )

I was pretty sure that the Training Course had an entire segment devoted to Just Barney going through the Hazard Course with the blue HEV Security suit and fighting a pro-alien-terrorist group at the end.
Honestly as someone who finished Half-life 1 for the first time last year and Half-life 2 and it's episodes this year, it was kinda refreshing not having cutscenes
I tried it (Enlightened version though) some months back and I had to stop at around 18:00, as I couldn't get Adrian to follow me. Otherwise I'd mostly agree. It has some neat ideas, but also a lot of unprofessional stuff, NPCs getting stuck often, lots of environments that were hard to read, and lots of unneeded heavy-handed callbacks to the various games. Edit: Oh yeah, and Enlightened seems to use environments in a different order.
I think it's wacky that they added yet another military faction, simply called "Special Forces", despite the HECU and Black Ops very much already being special forces units. Is there actually any reason for them to be their own thing, rather than be the Black Ops soldiers from Opposing Force? Or is really just to give them a new pistol and Pulse Rifles from Alien.
It would have made more sense to just use the Black Ops from Opposing Force, which is what the Black Mesa remake version does to keep things more lore friendly. And there are some mods on Gamebanana that can replace the Aliens Pulse Rifle wielding Special Forces with the Male Black Ops from Opposing Force armed with the M9 and M4 from the HD pack which makes more sense than whatever HEV Soldiers that the Gman decided to bring in.
I think they are refereed to special Forces. as during a time in early HL1 lore HECU was just marines under another command/name and Marines are not really considered Special Forces in some eyes. ... dumb but does make sense (mostly because HECU would shout lets go marines). then HL1 lore got sort of fixed whit that HECU draws from all branches and agencies of the US military. then Black Mesa Source almost went back by giving HECU more marine stuff (LAV-25 instead of Bradley I have no problem whit giving them LAV-25 what I got problem whit is them removing all Bradley in back mesa source because that turns the HECU from an Special force branch into just the Marine branch).
I could just tell the Enlightened Edition had one of the same problems as that other Half Life 2 mod, which ended up sexualising the game. It was honestly disappointing to see, as it does seem to have some good changes. There was zero reason to put Kate in a tank top, and I was honestly surprised and happy to see Female Guards in the original actually have proper protection. So far back when it was released as well, I know this isn't the main take away of the mod I should have, but it's all I could think about when you said Enlightened had some issues, hate that this seems to be a reoccurring thing in mods.
The poolstick reminds me of myself. For as long as I can remember, any stick has been a weapon over its intended purpose. I'd beg my parents to buy me plunger sticks at Home Depot. If I ever had to fight my way out a situation with a poolstick, it'd be a dream come true. ...and I'll stop with my stick obsession at that.
Excellent video, Lucia. By the way, if you haven’t already, you should make a video about Minerva: Metastasis and maybe about its prequel, Someplace Else too. I think Minerva was a pretty good mod and it deserves to have a video of its own on your channel.
Giving Gordon Freeman a voice, I am sorry to say but its hard, like really damn hard to give Freeman a voice besides possible grunts or Ross Scott who (this is my view and opinion) all the Half life fanbase accepts as Gordon. As for the scene with Gordon rising up the elevator, I would prefer if that section looked exactly, maybe different but you see someone else in an HEV suit, or atleast make it where you get shot but get back up from a passing medic dropping a med kit.

Just wait till you play Invasion. Another Pre hl2 mod that is really underrated Upd. You would deal with a tank in Point of View which intersects with story of Azure Sheep. And You said gun name wrongly. not M4A1 but M41A - Gun from Alien franchise.
You should create a full half life timeline including the mods. We'd have to create our own headcannon of course, but it would be fun having 20+entries of mods and games to create one (partially) cohesive universe

I absolutely loved this mod. It was flawed, cringe, and great for every reason you mentioned. I can't get enough of these pre-HL2 fan stories, as I also used to wonder what was going to happen next, to the point where I was actually disappointed with the story and setting of HL2 when it finally came out since it didn't seem as bizarre and colorful as all the fan stories.

At one point in development for HL1 it was considered to have cutscenes just like the one that takes you away from the character's perspective

You are incorrect in assuming that the cutscenes show Barney wearing a HEV suit after discovering one, as in both the endings of Azure Sheep and Point of View, Barney's model wears a vest rather than a suit if you look closer. 20:19 and 21:11.
The "M4A1" you obtain from the Spec Ops guys is actually the M41A Pulse Rifle from Aliens with it's firing sound feeling a lot like a mix between the Pulse Rifle and the Smartgun.
Of all this time knowing Azure Sheep is a thing, I for one did not know they added the god damn Pulse Rifle from Aliens lmao

ive played azure sheep a while back and i gotta say it's a really cool mod! sure some parts are a little weird such as just barney surviving the first black ops section, but i do find it really fun in a sort of fan fiction way. good stuff overall!

Azure Sheep was a ahead of it's time as a Half Life mod. It was a time when not everyone could make a mod that was more than... customs single players maps. It was indeed a technological improvement and an important pillar in the half life modding community. However as a Half Life game it totally lacks the consistency that official expansions have, it's expected to be so, it's a mod after all. However most of the mods that are proposing to fit as much as they can into the original storyline usually do. This one does not, it departs too much from the our understanding of the Black Mesa Incident. Not only because this Just Barney meets Gordon Freeman and does his fight for him against the assassin girls. Now there are Blue HEV Security units, which doesn't make much sense as the HEV is only but a protective suit for experiments and out of the world walks, not a battleready armor, although it can also function like that. In Opposing Force we've met the Black Ops, in this mod somehow these "Special Forces" loyal only to G-man exist to fill that role. Some of them have black HEVs, they also seem to work with the assassin girls. What are they doing? Oh yeah they are making experiments on scientists which is also a dumb idea... why just why. Somehow they also seem to have captured 2 panther eyes for Just Barney and Xonxt to fight. One of the overhaul mods makes some justice by applying the Aperature Science logo on their backs. The level design is also not that great over all the duration of the game. There are indeed some parts which are very nicely done but only some parts. Overall it's a great mod and i appreaciate the work but it's far from being the best one. Sometimes it's just better to have some nicely designed maps that make a lot of sense and fit together with the atmosphere of the original game than lots and lots of new weapons and enemies.
(Valve didn't create Opposing Force and Blue Shift by the way. Gearbox Did (the studio later responsible for Borderlands.

I was pretty sure that the Training Course had an entire segment devoted to Just Barney going through the Hazard Course with the blue HEV Security suit and fighting a pro-alien-terrorist group at the end.

Honestly as someone who finished Half-life 1 for the first time last year and Half-life 2 and it's episodes this year, it was kinda refreshing not having cutscenes
I played the mod 20 years ago. I hated the first half but it got pretty good after you get the pulse rifle.

I tried it (Enlightened version though) some months back and I had to stop at around 18:00, as I couldn't get Adrian to follow me. Otherwise I'd mostly agree. It has some neat ideas, but also a lot of unprofessional stuff, NPCs getting stuck often, lots of environments that were hard to read, and lots of unneeded heavy-handed callbacks to the various games.
Edit: Oh yeah, and Enlightened seems to use environments in a different order.
I think it's wacky that they added yet another military faction, simply called "Special Forces", despite the HECU and Black Ops very much already being special forces units.
Is there actually any reason for them to be their own thing, rather than be the Black Ops soldiers from Opposing Force? Or is really just to give them a new pistol and Pulse Rifles from Alien.
It would have made more sense to just use the Black Ops from Opposing Force, which is what the Black Mesa remake version does to keep things more lore friendly.
And there are some mods on Gamebanana that can replace the Aliens Pulse Rifle wielding Special Forces with the Male Black Ops from Opposing Force armed with the M9 and M4 from the HD pack which makes more sense than whatever HEV Soldiers that the Gman decided to bring in.
Maybe they are PMCs, since they must be working for the "G-Man"

as during a time in early HL1 lore HECU was just marines under another command/name and Marines are not really considered Special Forces in some eyes.
... dumb but does make sense (mostly because HECU would shout lets go marines).
then HL1 lore got sort of fixed whit that HECU draws from all branches and agencies of the US military.
then Black Mesa Source almost went back by giving HECU more marine stuff (LAV-25 instead of Bradley I have no problem whit giving them LAV-25 what I got problem whit is them removing all Bradley in back mesa source because that turns the HECU from an Special force branch into just the Marine branch).
Last I heard the OP4 SDK was not avalaible for the public, so they had no access to the models. So they had to make-do with whay they had.
From what I can infer, it just wasn't possible at the time to extensively mod Op4's version of the GoldSrc engine or port existing Op4 stuff into HL1.
I could just tell the Enlightened Edition had one of the same problems as that other Half Life 2 mod, which ended up sexualising the game. It was honestly disappointing to see, as it does seem to have some good changes. There was zero reason to put Kate in a tank top, and I was honestly surprised and happy to see Female Guards in the original actually have proper protection. So far back when it was released as well, I know this isn't the main take away of the mod I should have, but it's all I could think about when you said Enlightened had some issues, hate that this seems to be a reoccurring thing in mods.

Giving Gordon Freeman a voice, I am sorry to say but its hard, like really damn hard to give Freeman a voice besides possible grunts or Ross Scott who (this is my view and opinion) all the Half life fanbase accepts as Gordon.
As for the scene with Gordon rising up the elevator, I would prefer if that section looked exactly, maybe different but you see someone else in an HEV suit, or atleast make it where you get shot but get back up from a passing medic dropping a med kit.

I’m not sure how I feel about them cancelling the Azure remake when Tripmine studios is also already working on a Blue Shift remake.
Why put all your focus into a remake that is already being remade by someone else?
Then again, we haven't have anything from Tripmine, while HECU is already halfway past Blue Shift and with a new chapter coming out this summer.

I absolutely loved this mod. It was flawed, cringe, and great for every reason you mentioned. I can't get enough of these pre-HL2 fan stories, as I also used to wonder what was going to happen next, to the point where I was actually disappointed with the story and setting of HL2 when it finally came out since it didn't seem as bizarre and colorful as all the fan stories.
