Fallout 4 & 76's APC is a Hot Mess

  • In this Fallout 4 lore video, I discuss the unnamed APC design found in the commonwealth, starting with some theory crafting to give the vehicle a name. Then I dive into the known specifications and attempt to derive a few of the unknown. Then I talk about what I liked, disliked, and what I found to be interesting.
    Thanks so much for the support on my previous video, and hopefully on this one!

      My head cannon for the apc being so tall is its actually using a heavily modified drivertrain from a one of the civilizan vans. Its purpose would be equivalent to modern day swat vans its meant to look scary but its not actually designed for overseas conflicts its armor and weapons would not hold up to military grade explosives however it would be decent against civilian mobs with small arms weaponry. It uses the drive train from pre existing vehicles to stay cheap and affordable without too much rnd so the money can be put towards the war effort (This is all conjecture and isnt backed up by anything solid)

    Riot suppression was definitely a major use for this vehicle, especially since power armor was very commonly used for crowd control.
    Considering there doesn’t seem to be any space to store ammo for the ball or dorsal turrets, they were probably energy-based and drew power directly from the on-board reactor.
    The gun ports not being present on the interior is probably just a minor oversight, mirelurks were supposed to have visible gills but they got covered on the model and forgotten about.

    Feel like I should mention, its very possible that the 105MM turret was similar to the gun/launcher systems found on some cold war era tanks where the main gun doubled as a TOW missile launcher. This APC/IFV could exclusively use 105 TOW missiles, though I have no idea what the twin forward facing guns would fire, as secondary weapons it wouldn't make much sense to give those similar guided rounds. Profile also makes me think it would be way more prone to falling over with its top heavy design and short wheelbase. Entirely possible that the weight is under the 30 ton range, which combined with its very tall profile would give some credit to the amphibious idea.....if it had props or water jets on the back that is. Look at the AAV and you'll see what I mean, but the AAVs are also far longer and much more boat shaped, still sitting very low in the water.

    First off fantastic video, loved how deep you go into these things and how much thought is behind it. Keep it up ❤
    Next on the design aspect, while multi turreted tanks in the past have failed in their own ways due to either overworking the 1 or 2 gunners or having an oversized crew of "a decent sized village", the vehicle looks like it would do pretty well in an urban environment being that the assumed to be low velocity 76mm guns would be able to be utilized on things like intersections with the main 185mm always having a back up to fire when creeping past corners corners.
    The vehicle, being so tall, could also be perfect for being behind the tank in a convoy order as it would be able to rely on the tracks of the tank to compress any loose dirt creating a path and could fire above it with HE or (drum roll please) canister shells to clear pockets of infantry. I mention it again as its quite an overlooked shell when it comes to the design of a lot of things, and is a very valid shell, no I am not biased to the spicy salt shaker, I don't know what you're talking about.
    Now with the vehicle being all over Boston that brings another thought that it could have been made for countering domestic situations which leads a bit back into the idea that it was designed for urban combat purposes.
    Tldr, could have been made for primarily urban combat with low velocity guns in mind and we need to show love to the spicy salt shaker more.

    1 - The 'Hermit' could actually be made by whomever made the buses seen throughout the Commonwealth; the frontal silhouette looks quite familiar.
    2 - I think a crew of 3 would make sense. Commander, Driver, and Gunner (on the two 76mm or machine gun ball turrets; if the main gun is autonomous it stands to reason the two frontal guns would at the very least be semi-automated). The Commander, if needed, could probably manually fire the dorsal gun, letting the Driver and Gunner continue doing their thing.

    The value of crew comfort in an APC cannot be overstated. A unit that arrives well-rested is going to be far more combat effective than one that's fatigued from being bumped around for hours. That's why the new JLTV is such a huge deal beyond just better armor: improved suspension and air conditioning that actually works. The original Humvees had windows that could open and doors that could easily be removed. As they up-armored them, the windows no longer opened and the doors had to stay on, and the suspension was overstressed so the ride got worse. This coupled with an unreliable 1980s-era air conditioning system meant crew members would often arrive to the field drenched in their own sweat. As for the design of the Fallout APC, at least they're not still using the M113 in 2077, something I could unfortunately see happening.

The crew would have been at least 4- Driver, gunner, radio/loader/secondary, and commander. • @battysparton65
    @battysparton65 Год назад +2

    Huh.. Laser weapons actually makes a lot of sense. Also I have a theory about crew complement myself. My guess is its two man. The driver and the Commander/radio operator/co-driver. My guess is the driver operates the forward facing weapons from his station like some older vehicles with fixed machine guns like older model M2 and M3 light tanks, M3 Mediums, BMDs and other similar vics. The driver probably sits in the driver hatch while the Commander either operates the gun turret, if extremely cramped, or like you suggested remotely but there's not clear station for him to use or enter. This also could support the vehicle is just one man and the driver does everything, only using the top turret when the vehicle is parked. Though a tandem seat arrangement could also work, though entry would mean commander first while exit is driver first. Not very good for rapid entry or rapid escape in a combat situation. Laser weapons do make sense as you are right there are no ways to get arid of spent shell casings. Though I doubt a cannon would cause it to flip. The M1128 MGS sure doesn't have that problem. At least not that I am aware of. And its armed with a 105mm in a remote gun position.

    • @spydingo
      @spydingo  Год назад

      Hello there! Thanks for your comment. I think the tandem seat arrangement makes sense given the drivers slits present lower in the cabin and in the upper hatch. Each crew member would get their own vison slit, must be nice lol. Though, now that I look at it again, upper crew man would be practically sitting on the other's shoulders...hmm. Your right of coarse, the cannon probably would not cause it to flip, but I really liked the animation to illustrate my point lol.

    yo a point that may be interesting to think about as there arent any real exhausts perhaps the ports on the side that look like crew weapon slots could actually be exhaust ports and the hatches are there so that crew can close these ports for short periods to either help with stealth so there are no plumes of smoke leaving the vehicle or so you can close them when going through muddy and dirty terrain to stop things heading straight to the reactor and damaging it similar in nature to how the sentry guard bots can cover their fusion cores to reduce damage to the vital components but after a while of use need to be vented to allow for cooling. This would explain why most if not all of the ones we see are open because they were engaged and could not close them before persishing and also you would not need to close them in residential areas because the likelihood of a bullet perfectly ricocheting down one of the exhaust ports all the way to the engine is slim to none.

    I also feel the two 76mm ball turrets might have been used as oversized riot launchers before the bombs fell, just with a low pressure charge and a massive less lethal payload like CS gas or a stack pf rubber pucks or pellets, the guns could also be akin to 40k bolters in that a solid often cased charge is used to launch the rocket out of the barrel at lethal velocity before the rocket motors ignite, although with plasma or most impact detonated rounds initial velocity is less important

Its also literally like 99.9% immune to most anti-tank mines post cold war in terms of crew survivability, and most were made mobile again with minor field repairs. South Africa was one of the first nations to move towards larger wheeled fighting vehicles due to the unique conditions of the angolan border war, we needed our vehicles to be able to do 100+kph on public roads to get out to the border, the Ratel 90 came in at 19tons and could hit 65mph though a lot of the oakes ive spoken to that used to drive them have said they sit happy at 120 (i think thats 70mph)

    This might be what an APC would evolve into in a power armor world, the heavy arment might seem excessive for today but could be needed for defense against other light armor or the potential use of hostile power armor (granted I don't think china at the time had a counterpart, this might just be future proofing), the wheeled nature could mean this is mainly a battle taxi, it brings your power armor up to the front line, drops them off, extending their range, saving fuel (probably uses way less nuclear fuel to move the power armor this way then walk it out there) and giving a slightly more durable package (something that might be able to mess up power armor could probably damage this vehicle but would probably take way more punishment as long as a critical system isn't hit), even if it can only hold 2 suits at once, would you rather walk a section across open ground where they could get blasted by artillery and light anti armor weapons or truck them as close as you can safely then drop them off), the weapons also might not be energy or conventional cannons but possibly grenade launchers, low pressure guns (like on the AML-90 and the BMP-1) or even a downscaled demolition mortar like you would see on something like the 165mm on the M728 CEV or even flamethrowers (some actual flamethrower vehicles had dummy guns that had smaller barrels for the flamethrowers to prevent them from getting singled out when trying to close the gap to engage)
