This is my reaction to watching London, England's MEGACITY: Capital of the United Kingdom video for the very first time.
This video was more about the overall history of London, but it didn't show much of the tourist places to visit. Personally, I don't like living in cities and prefer the countryside, but I love visiting London. There's so much free stuff to see and do there. It's an amazing city with a mix of ancient history and modern buildings. You'd love it and everyone is very welcome. Oh, one more thing. Our average police officer doesn't carry a gun and are very approachable and helpful if you get lost, so don't be afraid to ask them for help. ✌️❤️🇬🇧
The three lions are the symbol of England, they are at the foot of Nelson's Column, the lions are made from captured French cannons at the Battle of Trafalgar.
They are also anatomically incorrect. Lions sit with their legs to one side, like the cats they are. These lions sit like dogs :)
There are 4 lions below Nelson's column.
The lions originate from the coat of arms of the Plantagenets, who ruled England fror much of the Middle Ages. They were quartered with the 'fleurs de lis', the symbol of French royalty, as the English monarchy maintained a claim on the French throne, for hundreds of years. In more recent times, the coat of arms is quartered with symbols for Scotland and Ireland, along with 2 quarters, of 3 lions in each, representing England. Together representing the 3 crowns of the English monarchy. Outside this central crest are a rampant lion and rampant unicorn, representing England and Scotland respectively.
I went to the London School of Economics and realise it is very well respected which is always quite impressive
I’ll never get used to the American pronunciation of plague (or Craig).
Yeah, the great plag. And crag.
Yeah, it’s dreadful.
There reason why London is so expensive is purely because everyone from home and abroad wants to live there. It’s literally the centre of the world for everything. It pushes the market value up.
That and a huge amount of Russian money sunk into London property that has never been lived in.
@@stevemichael8458 that wasn't a special deal just for Russians....it's open to investment from any Country/Nationality it's just that the Russians took full advantage of the investment opportunities...and then had it highlighted through the Media and politics. as an Englishman I don't agree with the selling of land and property to foreign entities...but that's Capitalism and with Capitalism you end up with great cities like London...even with dicks like Kahn trying his upmost to destroy it.
I love London and lived there 45 years. However, New York City is now way, way more expensive and exciting though London is, it doesn't come close to NYC.
I live in London, not everything is expensive, am out a lot! But whatever tis a small price to pay for living in the centre of the universe!
Centre of the rubbish pit
It doesn't cost much to walk around and admire the architecture!
London is THE city for many reasons 🏴🇬🇧
He keeps saying the plague and the fire was 'in the same year'. I was always told the Great Plague was 1665 and the fire was 1666. In fact, the fire helped burn a lot of the rats and other animals carrying the plague and effectively sped up its end.
Best fact about the Fire of London -- the king was awoken in the middle of the night to be told about a fire burning on Pudding Lane and said "a woman will piss it out" and went back to sleep.
Yeah there is a few mistakes. I'm sure not every monarch were crowned in the Abbey. Also did he say Wembley had the highest stadium capacity?? Not sure about that either.
@@issachunt3418 close enough, eh?
@@issachunt3418 The only two Monarchs not to be crowned there are Edward V and Edward VIII, and thats because they were never crowned (deposed and abdicated). The stadium capacity was the total, so if you add every stadium in the city together, the seating capacity is greater than any other cities combined total
The plague lasted from 1665 to 1666. The fire was in September 1666
@@issachunt3418 I interpreted it as London had the highest stadium capacity - if you count the others it may be true. I don't know the numbers
Edward V and Edward VIII were not crowned in the abbey as they were never crowned. Edward V was (possibly?) murdered before his coronation and Edward VIII abdicated before his. Also I guess Charles III lol since he hasnt been crowned yet but is now monarch!
Maybe I'm biased because I live close to London but I've always enjoyed going there :)
The 13.7 million figure refers to the entire metropolitan area of London. The official population, within the boundaries of Greater London, is closer to 10 million. :)
I lived and worked in London for a few years twenty years ago. It was tough - financially speaking - even then. It must be a nightmare now!
London is an awesom city to walk around. Obviously it is huge, so you pick parts. Say Chelsea. Or Greenwich. Or around Canary Wharf. Or along the river through central London (from the London Eye eastward to Tower Bridge). Every where is historic & beautiful.
Talk about the exponential growth of a city, the population of Mexico city in 2020 was just under 9 million, and yet you say today the population is about 20 million, now that is an exponential growth in just under 3 years
I moved to NW London from a rural English Shire on the Welsh border as a wide eyed 18 year old back in 1990, due to the work I was doing I was able to buy a ground floor 2 bed apartment by the time I was 30. Jump forward to 2010 and I'd had enough of City life, I think I had years before as I was taking the 3 hour drive back to the family home more and more, so I sold up and because of crazy London prices I made a killing on the apartment and moved back. The price I got for my apartment I managed to buy a 3 bed detached early 19th century renovated blacksmiths cottage with just over 3 acres of land about 20 minutes from where I was born, my wages have dropped massively, what I was earning in 3-4 months in London now takes me a year to earn, but I'm the happiest I've been in probably 30 years and I'd never move to a city again. Give me the woods, rivers and Welsh mountains any day over City life. 🙂
Amazing! And besides, you can live on much less when you don’t have rent or a mortgage (which I assume you don’t).
Property prices and rents are extremely high but most other things are cheaper than in the rest of the country. Of course, most visitors only really visit tourist hotspots, so come away with the impression that everything is expensive, when it isn't. :)
Do tell me what is cheaper in London than Leicester. Or Barnsley. Or even Edinburgh.
@@FTFLCY - public transport and takeaways, amongst others... :)
I love my city. Its a mess right now but still 🤣
React to every country England as ever invaded visualised
You wont need a visa for a short stay
Being born in London and under the sound of the Bow Bells I moved away from the area many years ago, I wouldn't move back to London if they was giving house's away for free.
I'm not from London but I've lived here 22 years. I've loved it but, enough is enough, I wont be here for my 23rd anniversary!
