But being politically allied to his notoriously cruel brother Ecelino didn’t help Alberico when he was eventually captured by Papal troops. What was Alberico so guilty of that had caused him to be hated in the Italian city of Treviso? The Middle Ages were violent, pitiless, and revenge-driven times. So today we continue our ‘Day In The Life’ series and travel back in time to see what life was like for Alberico Ezzelino on the worst day of HIS life, the day that he faced his execution. The cruelty of how the entire family was butchered seems a bit extra, even for medieval times. I wonder what else this guy had done that hasn't made its way to us.

Look at the 20th century, places like Germany, the Soviet Union, Cambodia, Cuba etc.. somebody from the middle ages might very well say no thank you if asked if they wanted to change places.

The writer that witnessed this with his own eyes probably needed to make a beeline for the nearest pub for a stiff ale afterward.
I would be surprised if he was all that affected. He would have seen other examples of supreme horror many times. The Middle Ages were a particularly death filled era filled with punishments that would kill you and at the same time exonerate you of any wrongdoing. Could you imagine being a woman who is being dunked for witchcraft? What do you pray for life or death?

Is there a record of the women having screamed for a prolonged period? That's rare. Usually people burned at the stake died from smoke inhalation, and would, at any rate, have struggled to make high pitched sounds once they started breathing it in.

Goddamn. You know what’s seriously fucked up? We are one step out of that vicious, monstrous way of life. With all the bigotry and hate that’s going on today, we are literally a step away from that kind of inhuman behavior. Plus, those were papal troops that treated other humans that way (yes, I know they were the family of a bastard himself, and he deserved punishment, although I don’t know if anyone deserves to watch their innocent children brutalized then murdered in front of them) that right there is the loving and kind history of Christianity. This reminded me of the scene in _The Count of Monte Cristo_ where the Count offers Albert and Franz seats to witness an execution by Mazzatello (clubbing to death). This too occurred in the Papal States. What is it about that area that lends it to being bloodthirsty?
