Love how these session tapes reveal that this song really started as a duet between the two competing melodies Nicky and Brian devised. Add to that he melody that Mick and Keith came up with for the vocal line (really a variation of Nicky's line), and it's golden. A real treat that stands out among all their work.
I fail to see any evidence this was devised by Hopkins and Jones. There were obviously main chords already set up. No doubt about the fact that Nicky and Brian were huge talents a contributed immensely. But one of the best examples of how they developed a song in the studio are Sympathy sessions.
I once accidentally cut a headphone wire - I still listened to " Their Satanic Majesties...." CD thru one speaker. Nicky Hopkins keyboards were heard only!!! It was out of this world!!! BTW that's Mr John Paul Jones arranging string section of this song and " 2000 Light Years From Home" ( the singles are shorter.) The Stones must like the number 2000 ( "2000 Man"....) can't believe KISS covered it! Hey thanx whoever posted this...
@@familydogg1234For clarity, JPJ arranged a string section for the song, not the song itself. This string section took much from Brian's mellotron part. 🎹🎶
Very cool. You can really hear the mellotron on this. Really incredible song, the first time I heard this song it was like the sun coming out, I'd never heard anything quite like it.
I happen to own one of Nicky's keyboards. I purchased it from Nicky's widow. Moira Hopkins about three years ago. It was shipped from London to New Hampshire, USA. It is my most valuable possession.
Super cool man. The closest I have is a pro skaters Adio shoes from the prototype, and a prototype board when they started to introduce fiberglass. But the 45s I have are def for safe keeping.
Kringles4; Any chance do you know what years Hopkins used that keyboard? I was so happy to learn a book was written on him " And On Piano- Nicky Hopkins". I used to see his name on credits alot. He played with all Beatles individually and of course their Revolution single. You are one Lucky person to own his keyboard!!!!
The synchronicity of the piano and mellotron on this song is absolutely breathtaking. Thanks Brian and Nicky for these and many more wonderful melodies
And another thing, Hopckins was magical in the period 1966-1975 in all his contributions and solo records, the best rock paino that Ive ver heard in my life.
My favorite Charlie era. Love his more adventurous drumming circa 66-68. After that, became more of the timekeeper that people lionize - which is fine, but I like the Charlie who was a little more adventurous. However, I could say that about the Stones as a whole; I like them most from about 66-68.
I wonder if Brian still alive would he make records with other bands and his first love the blues. l wonder. the opening WAS BEAUTIFUL sound created by Jones. Lovely
I read somewhere that in an interview, Mick said not to ask him about Paul and John recording with them for TSMR sessions because they were signed with competing lables. But still, it proves the guys were friendly and the Beatles were really into the Stones music.
Nicky could play a piano in a dark room, high as a kite and never miss a note. He was a Maestro and he turned every song he touched in a jewel. A lot of bands had the luck to have him on a record, but sadly a lot them didn’t give him his fair share of the booty
Yes, sadly I agree.Nicky deserved better. His trickling waterfall like piano on No expectations or his elegantly jeweled playing on Angie are a diamond necklace that adds a dimension to a woman's beauty, making her most captivating in a gathering. NICKY and BRIAN RIP 🙏🏽
People forget that it was Brian who brought Nicky into the Stones circle. Nicky worked with Brian on the movie soundtrack degree of murder that Brian composed at the start of 67. His first stones work was later in the summer of 67 with satanic majesties
Brian did indeed do some great stuff with mellotron. The supposed difficulty of playing one is overstated though imo. Nothing especially hard about playing them, especially for someone trained on piano, which Brian was. Lots of people of varing levels of ability have and do play mellotrons. I say this having played MK2, M400 and MKV mellotrons.

it is amazing ,King Charles and Keith have the same voice .....i can't tell them apart .clearly this a older Keith Richard that speaks on this recording

@@frankporfidio9813 I said it was his only involvement, clarifying he didn't do anything else on the album. However, given JPJ's mastery of music, it may well have only taken him 10 minutes to arrange the strings. 😁

diamond sounds from Nicky and golden sounds from Brian
It actually sounds rather like a joint venture with the Kinks and the Beatles.
Nicky must have been getting tired!
Is the drums super reverbered? those hits...It also seems like electric guitar with muted strings
No electric guitar. This is all live, no overdubs, everyone playing at same time.
