Tom "so what I'm saying is" Fitzgerald, Marcus "I just wanted to say" Herring, & Evan "put a bow on this" Husney
Solondz films are darker than most horror flicks...
You guys should do an episode with The Kino Corner! He has a great film analysis series called "literally me" where he dissects characters like Patrick Bateman ect. Getting more film RUclipsrs (that you guess genuinely enjoy) could really help grow the channel. I found you guys completely by accident but that could help pull in consistent new viewers.
Palindromes is my favorite movie of his. Tragicomedy of the highest magnitude
Imagine he made ''Welcome to the Dollhouse'' & ''Happiness'' with no sense of humor at all, that would've been really disturbing.
The scene with Selma Blair's character and the teacher is not censored over here in The Netherlands. I've got a Todd Solondz boxset (it's actually a sleeve with three dvd cases) with ''Happiness'', ''Storytelling'' & ''Palindromes'', and I've just checked to be sure lol ('cause it is probably more than 20 years ago I've watched ''Storytelling'', and I almost doubted myself lol), it has no red rectangle.
Solondz talk gives me a stiffie. Hell yeah dude 🤘
"Well Maybe it's for the best? ... People who are bad should be killed." I thought you guys were going to discuss the kid saying this to the maid as a form of foreshadowing. Consuelo obvious thought the family were "Bad People." So she took matters into her own hands.
I'm in the UK and I saw it on tv, the whole thing, no red box. Charming tale, like the rest of his work.
I bought this snapper for $1 20 years ago from my small town video store purely because... Belle & Sebastian. It then wound up in a box in my basement. Don't keep your snappers in the basement.
Little miss sunshine is a masterpiece
This sounds like a movie that could only be made by a guy from New Jersey, because to everyone who lives in New Jersey, it's hell on earth.
Another great one, you guys made me want to watch it again which I did not see coming. I really only remember the most painful moments from these Solondz movies and not all the great smaller moments. I remember being happy with Storytelling because I liked Happiness but had major qualms, especially the dog-licking-cum ending... but I found this one a much better watch. It seems like after Happiness Solondz plays less the role of angry-child-God-plucking-the-legs-off-insects role with his characters and focuses more on how they see themselves which seems to me a much more interesting approach.
It's interesting to me that this one premiered at Cannes before 9-11 and was released after, when everybody was bummed out on a whole new level, which seemed to make the pessimism here more appropriate somehow. I guess people have done studies on the films of 2001 and how they reflect 9-11? I'unno, I aint' in school no more.
Love this movie
Have you guys done an episode on Happiness yet?
I was in school when this came out and I remember one teacher remarking that she thought the main question in part one was whether the teacher had raped the student. I thought that was a pretty facile read, but I guess it is worth pondering...?
Solondz’s movies just seem completely out of date, these structures aren’t relevant to dissect and deconstruct anymore, it’s out of balance and eating itself from the inside out….
