  • A "Spaghetti Western" refers to an Italian directed, produced, scripted and scored film usually shot on location in Spain. The Tabernas Desert, and town sets constructed for these films attempted to replicate American and Mexican old west locations. Shot originally in Italian, they were dubbed into several languages. These were generally low budget films targeting audiences in Italy and Spain. With the international success of the "Dollars Trilogy" (1964-67), the genre took off. The Spaghetti Western heyday spanned from 1963 to 1975 with over 600 films produced. It evolved from simple western stories to tragically violent political statements, Mexican Revolution adventures, and finally slapstick comedies. Although many Spaghetti Westerns are almost unbearable to watch by todays standards of cinematography, editing, sound and special effects, many are worth viewing. My top 10 Spaghetti Westerns all have a common denominator, an excellent soundtrack (8 out of 10 by Ennio Morricone). Please keep in mind that copies found on the internet or cheap DVDs are often poor quality. I am but a fan of Spaghetti Westerns, for more information check out the experts at www.spaghetti-western.net.

Once Upon A Time In The West is the best spaghetti western by a wide margin. There are some flawed scenes, but the story itself, the musical score, the way that Leone filmed the big scenes, the climactic showdown and the mystery revealed put it way above all the others.

The Good, The Bad And The Ugly is probably the best spaghetti western, truly ultimate for the genre, but in total Once Upon A Time In The West is a better film, one of the best ever made. I give them both top score but wish I had an extra point or two for Sergio Leone's absolute masterpiece.

My Top 5 Westerns (including Spaghetti): 1 Once upon a time in the West. 2. For a Few Dollars More (Lee Van Cleef steals the show). 3. Tombstone (needed a Ennio soundtrack VAL KILMER) 4. The Wild Bunch (not sure if this is spaghetti), 5. Fist Full of Dollars. I have Good Bad & Ugly in my top 10 but not in my top 5.

My name is noboy is probably my favorit, but it definatly isn't the best SW.
The story is just so funny and Hill is hilarious, so hilarious you can feel Fonda smiling.
And then Fonda as the serious guy who doesn't know what to do with this clown.
I can't help but smiling when i think of that movie.
But yeah, when it comes to quality, it doesn't come close to your top 2.
    And i think Good/Bad/Ugly deserves 1st spot.
The POW camp, the bridge part, it is so anti war and made me think of so many things.
I didn't know when i first watched it when i was a teenager, but later on when i got the long version it did influence the way i look at war.
And ofcourse the Bud Spencer and Terrence Hill ones, i watched them so often in German as i lived close enough to the German border to recieve some of their tv stations.
They so often had their movies on and the westerns were my favorits.
Not a great story, just rediculous and oh so funny.
    Well deserved top 10.

Franco is always great. Keoma was good but terrible voice dub choices on the English version and an annoying theme song dropped it down the list. Mr. Strode was great as usual. I admit I have not seen a full version of Adios Texas. I had a terrible DVD copy that was unwatchable so I can't comment on it's merits. Thanks for your choices.
