      i camera stops after 30 minutes but there is a timer so i know that its going end after that time. i have just finished one of my recordings and my time has gone from 30mins to 15mins then after that video its gone down to 5 then 3 whats wrong

      Could be an overheating issue, and it's stopping recording to protect itself. What kind of camera is it?

      Hey I hace a a Canon Rebel T2i and a T5i , I have tired them both as my streaming cam and they just keep shutting off after like 3o mins, I dont know how to fix :(
      I even did the eos utility thing i think

    • @CamberFilmSchool
      @CamberFilmSchool  4 года назад +5

      I think that because those older models are designed to stop recording after the camera reaches around 4GB for a clip. Unfortunately I think there’s no work around for that.

    Love this! I was going crazy and wasn't sure what was wrong. The best part is I actually bought a new memory card ( I was stupid and never checked how much space was left, I just assumed this was the space limit on my 64 gb card and bought a 258 gb or something lol) and was upset that this did not solve the problem. When I searched online, surprisingly there were no resources that addressed this problem, there was always something similar but different. Life-saver!

    The first couple recordings are used to think it was the battery that was imposing this limit. I’m doing this for RUclips so I guess this forces me not to over record but the truth is I typically will sit there and record 2 to 3 different intros and Altro‘s so that when I go to the editing portion I’m not realizing that the footage was bad and then going back and trying to set up and re-record parts.

    I have a Canon Rebel T6 and my camera will only record clips around 12 minutes opposed to 30. My first assumption was my card is too small, but after doing some research, any class 10 card (which is what I have) should have no issue recording for 30 minutes of length, I then tried to re-format my card which also didn't help. Now i can't figure out why I cant get my recording to last 30 minutes. I'd love some guidance if you have any.

    • @CamberFilmSchool
      @CamberFilmSchool  4 года назад +2

      I think that’s just the max length that the filing system will allow. I have a t2i and it does the same. You’ll just have to push record again.

    • @CamberFilmSchool
      @CamberFilmSchool  4 года назад +4

      Yep, I just looked up the manual for the T6 and in the movie shooting section it says that recording stops automatically when the file size reaches 4GB. So that must coincide with the 12 minutes.

    Magic lantern doesnt remove the limit, it only restarts it automatically after the limit has been hit within about 1 sec. There are other ways like using an intervalometer and setting ur shutter button as the record button in custom button settings, and setting the intervalometer to 29:59 or like 30 minutes to hit the shutter button and it will automatically restart video recording at that time. There are several videos on it, watch it to make sure I didnt say wrong time. Last but not least, that whole tax reason is bs, as cameras are built differently for different markets to begin with, and software / firmware are different in different markets also. From a coding perspective this is a non issue, as Let's say canon for instance has cameras that are only meant for canon usa market and vice versa for many other markets. Hence the reason for grey market cameras that are actually built by canon but often not to the same specs or different parts used for some foreign markets like with the 5d mark iv, and same thing for lenses, is it a quality difference I dont know. But electronics built with different features in different markets are nothing new, like dvd players etc... There is a limit because they figure it cuts into there camcorder or video recorder business model by letting u record infinite amount of time same as one of those devices from a device which is designed primarily for photos.

    Absolutely, I was using a Canon 5 during an event when I realized that it was always stopping everyone and a while. Magic Lantern "can void warranty" is a bit misleading because it doesn't change the machine it's self. It runs off the the memory card. Some variations have been known to brick your camera but just moving the SD card will get rid of the infringing software and boom your warranty can't be proven to be voided. (My background is in software development and physical systems testing... wheres that degree now lol)

    One of the biggest reasons I chose my Lumix G85 was because it could record continuously as long as I had power and memory. It does chop up the files in 4GB chunks, but they are easily combinable in Premiere. Since I was doing some concert recordings, I needed that continuous feature. One day I would love to upgrade to a Canon or Nikon, but I won't as long as they continue to put that silly artificial time limit on there. Hopefully it's true that the tax will go away one day. I'm a noob but my daughter graduated with a degree in cinematography so when I decided to move from taking pictures of my retail store items with my cell phone and move up a bit in the world, she recommended the Cannon M50 MII perfect for that and blogs, youtube videos, etc but even she was unaware of why there was a limit on my camera of 30 minutes recording time when I just bought a 512GB card. You explained it very well and answered by the question but why we in the USA are restricted by an EU restriction if I understand you correctly "is lame"! Damn, I thought I was upgrading only to find my cell phone records longer? I usually run several recording devices around me simultaneously for B-Roll film for my RUclips channel and this just sucks! But thank you, I was wondering if I got scammed by the company who made my SIM card thinking they were faking the actual size of memory in it. Mystery solved!

    • @CamberFilmSchool
      @CamberFilmSchool  2 года назад

      Yea. Unfortunately the Canon M50 m2 is a pretty bad camera when it comes to video. Aside from the 30 minute limit, autofocus is absolutely terrible when using 4K because of the huge crop added when in that mode. Something like the Sony ZV-E10 or a6100 both hand NO crop in 4K with great autofocus in ALL modes plus no recording limits.

    Outstanding information. So I'm running an older Canon EOS Rebel SL1. My memory card is a 32 Gig Ultra San Disk (40 MB/s). Recently I find myself in a position where I need to record several times a week for one hour straight. My first attempt resulted in the camera breaking up the recording into 3 files - 2 of which were approx 13 minutes and one that was approx 4 minutes. The two larger files were 4 Gigs each - so I'm assuming that's the limiting factor there - with a combined time of 30 minutes. The broken recording stream is workable but it would save me some time if I only had to deal with 2 files of 30 minutes. Any idea how I can expand the 4 gig limit?

    • @CamberFilmSchool
      @CamberFilmSchool  3 года назад +2

      That’s because SDHC cards can only record 4GB at a time. SDXC (has to be at least 64GB to be SDXC) cards should record it all in one file. Not sure if the SL1 is compatible though.

    This is very helpful, thank you.
    Do you also know why difference cameras can record into longer/larger video files? My Sony FDR-AX33 will record 40GB+ .mp4s, where my DJI Action 3 creates multiple 3.696GB files. It's something I've always accepted, but never thought about why.

    • @CamberFilmSchool
      @CamberFilmSchool  8 месяцев назад

      Depends on the SD cards you use along with the system’s writing format. A 32GB card and below will automatically format the multiple smaller files. Most new cameras using a 64GB card or higher don’t typically do that.

    Hoping you can answer a question for me, I've been told that people use a capture card to use their DSLR as a webcam, I assume this then means unlimited recording otherwise it wouldn't work as a webcam? Can a capture card be used to unlimited recording to a program on a PC, and not as a webcam. I know that Canon has recently brought out some beta software for this purpose but it's not for Australia.

    • @CamberFilmSchool
      @CamberFilmSchool  4 года назад +1

      That’s because a lot of entry level DSLRs also have a max GB recording limit that corresponds to around 10-12 minutes when in FHD. Nothing you can really do about it aside from get a newer Sony or Panasonic camera that don’t have recording limits anymore.

      @@CamberFilmSchool it’s connected to my atomos via my atem mini pro. I shoot with three cameras and my 5D mark iii always shuts down at the 30 minute mark. What I’m saying is that just connecting the camera to the atomos does not make the camera record more than 30 minutes if you press record on the camera. You have to record on the actual atomos and it is recording the feed coming from the camera.

    Thanks for this video! I have been researching trying to find a camera that can record 2+ hours without babysitting it. I knew about the 30 minute limit on cell phones but had no idea it applied to cameras as well.
    My old cell phone ran 2+ hours and it still works -- I just need to add more memory to it. Tested it last night and it recorded for an hour before it ran out of memory.
    Are there any cameras that record for 2+ hours? Does the Sony a6100 mentioned in your comment below record over 30 minutes?
    Can you recommend a super lightweight camcorder/video recorder (to get past the 30 minute limit)?
    If one were to use the recording monitor, do you have to mount it on a second tripod?

    • @CamberFilmSchool
      @CamberFilmSchool  2 года назад +1

      The a6100 has no 30 minute limit. I’d need to know the type of video you’re wanting to make before being able to recommend anything specific. And you don’t need a second tripod for an external recorder. You’d just mount it on the camera.
