I really want him to keep this as a prop in his filming set, so that he can always emphasize a point by banging the desk and having the receiver fall down.
Absolutely agree! Hilarious, nerdy, and definitively unique. I want him to do exactly that now. =)
its too funny
Great idea
It would also be nice if Techmoan could get that to work and add to his intro and greeting welcoming everyone to his channel via the videophone.
That would be awesome
How cool would it be if you put this on a high shelf, and when you wanted to answer a call you banged the desk and caught the handset on the way down

The very first computer I used that had a webcam (Silicon Graphics Indy, 1996) came with a slide-over lens cover. I suspect one major reason the computer makers won't build-in a sliding lens cover (other than the accumulated cost of them cutting into the CEO's donut & sushi budget) is because there would be thousands of customers calling in because their webcam wasn't working (when they'd just have the cover closed)

Yep, a videophone in your home is the coolest thing ever!
And now everyone has a videophone in their pocket and we hardly ever use it.
I always decline FaceTime calls at first thinking someone pocket dialed me because no one ever calls you on it.
Mostly used for porn.
Eh, I do group facetime calls with my family a couple of times a week. And I'll facetime friends if I need to ask them about something where it would help if they could see it, or I'll do a video call to my roommates if I spot something they might want and I need to know if they want me to pick it up for them. And of course I do a video call with my girlfriend quite often because it makes the whole long distance relationship thing much easier. I actually do a lot of video calling, and so do most of my friends and family, but I'm guessing I'm not exactly the typical viewer of this channel.
@@bentleymn Yeah that's true. My guy friends do seem less inclined to do video calls.
I share your hatred of voice calls though, I only answer for a handful of people I'm really close to because they cause me major anxiety. Video calls aren't quite the same to me though and I'm not sure why.
Conference calls for work, that's all I'd be using it for (and that's usually through my work laptop anyway). Besides, I like to walk around when on the phone, so it would likely drive the other person nuts.
BT (or more accurately the Post Office as it was then) had an internal videophone trial in the late 1960s. Followed by about 20 sets of the Mark 2 Viewphone, most at the HQ building in Gresham Street, London and the rest at the Dollis Hill Research Station. Those were analogue systems, monochrome, 319 lines (vertical scan in Mark 1, conventional horizontal scan in mark 2), 50 field/s, 2:1 interlace, 1 MHz bandwidth running over twisted pair cables.
The H.261 standardisation process began in 1985. I was its editor, participating in the international meetings and led the small group at BT Research Labs building a pair of hardware prototype codecs. Each was the size of a fridge-freezer.
All the subsequent video compression standards in the H.26x series and the MPEG series are based on the same techniques as in the original H.261.

Really interesting ! I actually worked on some of the technology behind all of this. At the time telco companies were in a battle with IT companies as to which technology would provide internet to the home. Telco's were pushing ISDN (2B+D) whilst the rest of the industry were pushing TCP/IP. BT even launched a service called "Home highway" which provided ISDN (2 x 64 KB/s) to the home in the mid-90's and I knew a few small businesses in remote areas who signed onto it. But as we now know, 'broadband' came and demolished all these ideas of delivering internet and video-phones to the home via an ancient telecoms standard (ISDN).
I’m watching this on a modern smartphone capable of FaceTime, and yet I consider the Videophone to be a much cooler device based on its design alone.
@Eduardo Mendez I think it's remarkable they assembled anything!
Apple designers are reading this and crying now.
Yea, the idea of it being able to send video's to coworkers and then having it played of a VHS Tape, Sounds like a amazing concept.

"The reason I called is because I don't want to see you."
Yeah, I was dead wrong about cameras on phones being a pointless gimmick that wouldn't catch on but for the most part I was right about video calling not being something people would actually want to use, and certainly not replacing voice calls.
It has its applications but usually the only time I make video calls is when I've accidentally phoned a friend via whatsapp (or worse, someone I barely know).
I really hope you find more episodes of Tech 93

@@Time4Technology It's the cue for Technology Connections and one of his catch phrases.
But first you need to switch the network type to "X21 Leased line".
Also, in X.21 mode, it should theoretically be possible to connect to a PC with a dual RS422 interface per X.21 link. But then, I have no idea about which software could be used to decode/encode the communication.

Btw, the Tandberg 6000 was the defacto standard for most tele presence setups all the way until around 2004-2005. Then computerised Cisco systems became better over the growing TCP/IP protocol (or Internet in general if you will). We’re proud of Erik Tandberg in Norway, he’s one of the pioneers in tele- and computing systems. And he is still an avid space program enthusiast. :)
Before Tandberg switched to tele/computing, they made some great home audio- and TV equipment too; i remember when i was a kid in the late 50s ~ early 60s my Aunt and Uncle had a Tandberg reel to reel tape recorder and it was just rock solid.

My secondary school had a language lab equipped with Tandberg TCR-522 machines. I can't say I enjoyed using them much but I did like the utilitarian styling and weird tape transport symbols.
