You're right. His explanation about why using two digits was problematic is mostly inaccurate. It had nothing to do with binary, or ones and zeroes, turning things off. Software using 2 digits for the year was the issue, but not for the reasons he says. Also not hating, love the show.
This is so hilarious. I didn’t realize we were this old already. Wtf. And it just happened over night. I feel like yesterday I was still young and hip, then woke up old. FML
I was one of those IT guys who fixed things for Y2K... some stuff was overblown fears, but there were some things, particularly legacy accounting software that fell apart in our tests that could have caused all sorts of unpredictable behaviour.
Elder millennial checking in, love the show, and you sir are a saint. So patient with your daughter, bless your soul. One day she’ll realize all you do brother 🤣
Find Arnold is the soviet version of where's Waldo. Hey look, Arnold's in red Square, Arnold's in chernobyl, Arnold got thrown into a gulag for espionage
They though all the world's nuclear weapons might think changing from 31/12/99 to 01/01/00 was an attack by an enemy and decide to launch themselves. Flights that night were very cheap and no-one wanted to be on a plane when the change occurred.
I was on a plane IN THE AIR at midnight that night. I was supposed to land at like 11:15, but there was bad weather so we turned back. I will admit, I was a bit of a nervous wreck! 😂 Everything was fine in the end though, obviously!
16:40 Johannes Gutenberg left the chat ^^ But it's really good to tell how that stuff works and from where it comes and what is the development in that line until now. It's important to know that the actual tech situation was not suddenly falling from heaven and it has a substantial pre-story.
Even in 2004 i remember downloading music and it taking hours for a few songs, just for the files to be corrupted because the internet had a short outage during the night
Just wanted to say the one thing I wanted more than anything after the first few minutes was to see the dog so I fully support Talissa's decision to show us Biscuit/Toast!
id lose my cool. either be prepared and already have it or just leave it alone, secondly let the dog be, how would you like it if someone kept calling you and trying to grab you while you do your everyday things?
My first computer was an 8088, with 4mb RAM and a 256mb hardrive. The monitor was CGA. I was playing a very early RPG called "Altered Destiny." When my character had to walk to the next screen, I could go cook dinner, clean the house, take a shower, then come back and still wait for that next screen to load.
4mb ram is pretty high for an 8088; i have my doubts the motherboard would support that high. Are you sure it wasn't more like an 80286 maybe (otherwise called a 286).. I had an 8088 and it could only support 640k "conventional" memory, and had a 10mb hard disc drive, monochrome. We later upgraded to an 80486 (486) with maybe 2mb ram and 255mb hard disc..
This is the first episode I've listened to all the way through, previously was just clips on TikTok. I'm surprised to find that Dad doesnt really know how stuff worked, or why, either. But honestly it makes it better.
In 2038, Unix and Linux based 32-bit computer's clocks will roll over to think it's Jan 1st 1970. Luckily we are mostly using 64-bit systems and I think some hacks have been put in place on some 32-bit systems. But it's possible there might be some older systems people are still using that will break then.
if you were in a college or some other place with a fast connections most pictures would only take a few seconds or less to load but if you were on dial-up it would take SOO long. this was in the 90s. printing presses were a thing in like 1400, typewriters were like in the late 1800s. the first electronic computers were working in like the 1940s but it took a couple decades for them to mature enough to be useable for people that were less educated than scientists.
Two things - first, this episode make me dislike dogs more than I already did. Lol Second, downloading music took FOREVER! An album would take 10-12 hours.
24:44 - Little girl; you can't imagine what it was like to be a young man around the year 2000 waiting ages for a single picture of a naked lady to load. Kids today don't know struggle.
You should have seen a Christian Book Store leading up to Y2K. All the books claiming Y2K was the end of the world and how Revelation proves Y2K is the rise of the Anti-Christ and the end of the world. It was hilarious. It was the start of my journey out of Christianity with all that non-sense. Also, IT made bank on the Y2K bug lol
I’m only 25 and she makes me feel ancient 🥲🥲🥲 love the podcast tho! You’re so patient with her, and she’s trying so hard to stay focused and not get lost in time & space 😂
You should just take her to an Antique mall and have her guess what items are.
That’ll be a show in itself.
Yes !
I am dying from the confidence when she tells you it's "hook me up".. now you know dad lol
I literally laughed til my sides hurt when y’all started talking about Dewey and his decimal system 😂😂😂
I was yelling "stamp" annoyingly the entire explanation 🤣
HAHA, me too.
I was taught that they used mm/dd/yy instead of mm/dd/yyyy was to save what limited memory space that was available at the time.

Wow, find Arnold? My last name is Waldo. That one cut me deep. lol
Wait until she learns that we had to look up things in the encyclopedia for projects and you couldn't take them home.

I think she appreciates and loves and respects him very much. She just has horrible ADHD. It’s clear the love and bond they share.
Still listening to the end. She’s funnny
I Love You Talissa!
Find Arnold is the soviet version of where's Waldo. Hey look, Arnold's in red Square, Arnold's in chernobyl, Arnold got thrown into a gulag for espionage
I remember that the movie Office Space, the main Character, Peter Gibson, the job he hated so much, was to update for the y2k switch. xD

Her ADHD triggers my ADHD in the best way lmao 😂
I'm 27 about to be 28 (born in 94) and I remember photos loading slow like that. I also remember win amp 🤣
Yes! I’m 27 and remember the photos loading slow also. 😂
I DIED after the Find Arnold comment. lol😂😂

The Card Catalog..
Even in 2004 i remember downloading music and it taking hours for a few songs, just for the files to be corrupted because the internet had a short outage during the night
i remember that way to much! it was the worst time ever. it took 10 mins for me back in the day
On 9/11 the FAA used a plan they had devised for Y2K to ground all planes.
I want to play Find Arnold.
I listen/watch all the way to the end. You guys are so funny.
The early computers had very little space. So 94 took less room than 1994.
I’m gen x and if you put me in a room with a puppy I wouldn’t be able to focus either 😂
Just wanted to say the one thing I wanted more than anything after the first few minutes was to see the dog so I fully support Talissa's decision to show us Biscuit/Toast!

38:49 Novels with Stamped Words help with speaking :) LUL xD
It sounds like she would be a visual learner. I can see her brain trying to figure it out while you explain it.

You guys are amazing. I’m 44 and never had kids. For the first time ever, I wish I did. I also wish I had a dad but meh. Lol

24:40 yes I remember it like it was yesterday xD LOL
Saw the dad-ness for the first time on your show.
Y’all both are so funny- ❤
I love how she just blurts things out when you say something. “Stretch Armstrong, Popeye. “
OMG when they start on the decimal system you could just put an image of the planet on David's face and a US flag on Talissa's :D
Annoyance factor = content
TDIL you write for Jordan Harbinger.
I love these podcasts
Actually almost all communications are threw undersea cables/towers not satalights
They say you should never work with children and animals, but I can't imagine why.
Please tell her about lawn darts
You alt to ask her about when we had to pop our own pop corn- or rewind the VSH tapes so you didn’t get charged for a rewind fee
New to this cast. Makes me want to lose my hair as a father almost.. almost. Toasted biscuits. Mix of both the bad names.

That’s hurts talking age- I’m 65- haha-
Tullisa is about as focused as Toast.
The dog thing was cute the first three times then it got old. But still love you guys!
It was less about binary being 1 and 0, but about it thinking it would be the year 1900 not 2000.
Two things - first, this episode make me dislike dogs more than I already did. Lol Second, downloading music took FOREVER! An album would take 10-12 hours.
Biscuit
I use Snapchat purely to screenshot filters. Literally don't even post or open posts on the app. 37. 🤣

Get a shock collar. It’ll help with attention span…..also maybe get something for the dog lmao.
Perfect example of the y2k year code brought to nowadays is you guys labelling this episode 015…What happens when you hit episode 999???? 😂

33:09 Find Arnold LUL
Biscuits are better name
What? I was born in 86 and I'm a millennial.
Yeah, the internet goes through the ocean... Bible says so...
Science too.
See if she knows these throwback words we use to have : "Honesty, integrity, talent, love "
She looks like Billie eilish
I usually enjoy these episodes but she was really annoying on this one. Focus up. God love you sir die your patience
Point of this whole episode is that Boomers ruin everything and all the newer generations have to fix their mistakes. Thanks Boomers!!!
Gen X created RUclips and mostly millennials are who fostered RUclips and made it grow
I follow her on insta 🤯
Dont like the banner in between them
Nobody asked and more importantly nobody cares
I’m only 25 and she makes me feel ancient 🥲🥲🥲 love the podcast tho! You’re so patient with her, and she’s trying so hard to stay focused and not get lost in time & space 😂
