- What's that? A race swap casting for YET ANOTHER live-action adaptation? In a market already so against animation that studios either put no effort into new productions or literally wipe all traces of them off the face of the earth; OF COURSE THIS is the thing we should be angry about.

One thing that I loved about the one piece live action was that every character was casted to be from the race they were in the manga/anime.
controversial take:
why not just make up a new movie? why do people have to get swapped characters as a consolation prize? there is plenty of cool history and stories out there or even make something new, don't change that pre-established character, make something new and awesome, it's supposed to be entertainment right? get rid of sloppy leftovers being thrown back into our faces slightly differently and make a new movie.
I agree with you, but playing devil's advocate, would there be anyone to buy originals? Even original movies that doesn't deal with race or history are ignored by people (Hell, the same people who complain of Hollywood sequels).
There is Jordan Peele, but like, he's by himself.
@@ThePrinceofHisOwnKingdom i think thats an issue with writing, if its a good movie people will buy it even years later.
the amount of ppl who rebuy the old Disney movies (as an example) if they rly wanted to any of the big film companies could make a new original any time they wanted but they just want to milk everyone's nostalgia, and we shouldn't accept laziness as an excuse, they could make the next amazing movie instead the regurgitate the old classics.
@@ItAintCommon No offense, but you're talking like we're still in the DVD era, not streaming.
And like I said, we got good original movies every year. Indie, semi-indies and foreign. But people still choose to flock the franchise blockbusters instead.
some ppl still buy DVDs, but look at it this way encanto and coco amazing movies, I haven't heard bad things about them the are loved by many, is it too much to ask that instead of say doing a lionking remake(which is pretty much shot for shot the old movie) (as an example) they made a whole new movie focused on another culture, we know they CAN do it.
if we were talking indies or small creators exclusively, I would have much more leniency but to be big multi-trillion dollar companies, not so much
@ItAintCommon You're kinda ignoring Lion King remake made a billion bucks. The people are the ones excusing the big corpo studios.
This whole race swapping thing is just so sad. Are they simply incapable of writing new, interesting black characters? They’ve gotta turn a well established white character black because they’re not worth the time to create?
It honestly feels disrespectful af to both white and black people imo.
@@SpringusCortingus It’s not that they’re “not worth the time to create”. Hollywood still does create new black characters. The problem is that most people write them off as “woke” or “dei” and the fact that studios don’t often like taking risks in things that would make audiences feel like that
@@Age_Of_Nostalgiayou absolutely did not disapprove of this comment in any notable way.
And no, we don’t call them “woke” unless they make that their whole personality. “I’m black, I’m different” is what people hate.

"History", in a cartoon about dragons. I don't even disagree with you about race swapping but these rebuttals are always goofy.
@@randomcharacter6501 yeah it can be hard to make a good point about history and how they would be all the same race while it being a fantasy type of story with fake things like dragons, but if you turn it around with a old story about african history with something fake like dragons there not gonna just throw in some asian dude as one of the characters. but the whole situation is just really stupid

okay, 2 minutes in and i can already tell this dude is not acting in good faith.
Here's why your examples of race swapping and culture erasing are poor. A: The characters despite being portrayed by none ethnic people are STILL treated as their respective race (Motoko is still Japanese even if Scar Jo is the one playing her, Maximus is still a Roman even though an American plays him, Leonidas and Achiles from the 300 and from Troy are still Greek despite both being played by American actors, and the Prince of Persia is still Persian for the same reason.) B: While hollywoodized, made over the top on purpose, or simply making a few innacuracies, these movies still mostly portray these cultures in a mostly faithful maner. I myself Am Greek, Athenian, and i to can be annoyed by some innacuracies or misconceptions when it comes to the misuse of Mythology or any historical innacuraces. However, im not going to blame Hollywood for any of their casting choices for one simple reason, C: there are no Greek actors that could play these characters. Greek actors are mostly stage performers or entertainers. They don't have the range, the build (let alone the willpower to obtain it), nor a full understanding of the English language to make for a compelling screen presence. Hence why it is perfectly reasonable to cast white American actors that CAN play these roles instead of forcing in a Greek actor to play them despite not being suited for it to begin with. Same exact reason why a Persian man wasn't cast to play the Prince and why a Japanese woman wasn't cast to play Motoko in the Ghost in The Shell movie. Because there is no Japanese- American actress or a Persian-American actor that could have the same range or screen presence as the actors chosen for both roles.
Sidenote: Bane is half white half Latino. What's the problem of a white American playing him?
Bonus sidenote: If you really wanted to make a compelling case for opposite race swapping (IE: Asian to white like you tried to do with Motoko), you could've used Light Yagami from the Netflix Death Note movie as an example, or pretty much any character from that abomination of a film, and i could, in theory, have seen your point. Unfortunately, you had to call everybody else (including me) that disagrees with you racist, which not only affirms my bias is correct, but also that my presumption of you lacking the intelligence and emotional maturity to engage with these topics is more than proven right. Case in point, by the very rules you have established, you have failed to follow through and actually have an honest conversation by labeling everyone in disagreement with you a bigot.
@@drewblackmatter6669 find I it funny how you’re talking about “having an honest conversation” when you’re using some of the most dishonest talking points. Bro you literally said Greek actors don’t have “the will to achieve” the proper look for a role? You mention Bane being half Latino so that make it okay to be played by a white American. Which 1, he wasn’t. And 2, if that’s the case then the woman playing Astrid is half white. So it should be fine for her to play Astrid right?
@@Age_Of_Nostalgia First point: Yes, and im not even going to elaborate. If you have not watched any Greek soap operas (yes, believe it or not, we have those. No, they aren't worth your time at all) you'd know exactly the kind of actors that get into these roles. The athletic types don't make any compelling fight scenes outside of throwing a few punches, and the good actors are always the middle aged fat types. So yeah, there are no Greek actors that could play a convincing Achiles or Leonidas, much less in a blockbuster hollywood flick meant for an American viewerbase.
Second point: Bane has white skin despite being half latino, but i'd argue anyone could theoretically play him so long as they have the body type. Of course you assumed i was going to say he should be played by a white man based purely on a question you never even answered. Astrid is a blue eyed blonde woman, so no, a half latina can't play her because she looks nothing like her. Neither does a black actress, an Asian, a ginger, or a brunette for that matter.
But since you feel the need to call me dishonest when i tried giving you some decent constructive criticism, im gonna ask you something in the tongue of my ancestors and hopefully you can translate it and then answer.
''Εξ Ιδιων κρινεις Τα Αλλοτρια?''
and also, just as a bit of advice i'd tell you this. When you compare yourself to others, don't let your shadow compensate for your lack of height.
@ Yes I called you dishonest because you are. Again, if your point is that Bane is half Latino this can be played by a white person. The woman playing Astrid’s is black AND white. And in most pictures she has the same skin color as Astrid in the animated film.
@@Age_Of_Nostalgia Have you tried looking in the mirror my dude? Have i gotten under your skin so badly that you can't even type properly anymore?
@@Age_Of_Nostalgia Have you tried looking in the mirror?
i can split the arguments into 3 relevent points.
1. most of raceswapping people vocally complain about are from recent years and these changes are mostly white to black, I do remember when gods of egypt came out people laughed at the casting (and the movie overall for being not good) but from around the last 5 years people have started getting annoyed by it and vocally talk about it more, so saying people only started caring when it is white to black is inaccurate at best.
2. most of the people vocally talk about it are white, so they will naturally focus more on whites being replaced. so the question should be where did the black (or any other) community was to complain when their characters were being replaced? why was it not heard louder?
3. awareness for these things (and this an celebration of the first two points) is higher today than it was ever was, I assure you if a black character will be replaced today by another race everyone will notice and complain about.
i think the main problem is that most American projects these days are based around white culture and history and not enough on other cultures so the American minorty feels underrepresented and wants to "join in". i mean look at the asian movie market, not a single noteworthy raceswap in asian made movies and all if not most the cast is asian, even between asian countries you wont see raceswapping (like japanesse movies forcibly including Korean or Chinese. or the other way around)
there is a simple solution, respect the culture you make a movie about, not the culture you make the movie for.
btw saying "characters were not being made specifcly white, it was the default" just means it was made in white culture, making it part of the white culture, making these changes even more racist as you delibrtly change one culture to fit another.
in the end any argument to both sides is racist, "why did they change my white/black/asian character?" is as racist as the decision to "lets change this white/black/asian character" its not bigotry to notice a change especially if you have a connection to that character.
They could have atleast died her hair blonde...
fun fact they are pretty much all wearing wigs so it was literally an active choice to not make her blond

@@CvntBunchaNumbers We say the same thing every time one of ya'll cry for more "inclusion" or "diversity" in every conversation, dork.

the only thing that most people i know that have an issue with the choice of actress is that they are not alike their animated character. I think one problem with saying everyone who doesn't like the choice Hollywood has made is racist is that it sets the narrative that if you dislike a change that has to do with casting a character that isn't like their animated version you are the lowest of the low and that you must be a bigot. take snow white for example in the story it states that she had hair black as ebony her skin was white as snow with lips as red as roses. as you put it written into her character. so to say that everyone who dislikes a choice such as casting is such a one dimensional way to address the situation.
exactly !
What the hell does the voice actor's ethnicity have anything to do with the character? I don't care whether she was voiced by a black, white, brown or yellow-skinned person, Astrid's physical appearance would still be the same. You can make an animated movie set in ancient China and have black actors voicing the Chinese-looking characters and that would be okay because it's voice acting, and the characters still look how they're suppose to be.
A world lives and dies by its believability. And making the very idiotic choice of having every single location in every modern fantasy world look like the population of Los Angeles isn't exactly transporting people into another world or makes them believe what they're seeing. Someone needs to tell black people that they and their ancestors did not witness every single event that has ever occurred in history.
Ah so we cannot circumvent the will of a comic book writer in fiction but we can circumvent history in reality.
... This is a movie about dragons
@JowoeBunchaNumbers It's also a movie about Norse people. Not a lot of blacks in Norway today much less on whatever timeperiod this is based on.
Also, they have dragon lore in Norway as part of their myths. So that part is also more believable lol.
Imagine a movie based on Mayan tribes and their versions of dragon but you see lily white Mayans running around. Or we're talking about about a Ghana tribe and you see Koreans running around.
“it doesn't matter because there

doesn't need to be a reason why a
10:58

11:00
unless the reason is tied to the
11:02

Hell yeah race matters when you are literally making a live action movie about the SPECIFIC movie, you obviously want to see those same characters, all as they are including race come to real life form, specially when your making a movies and half of those characters literally do look like the one from the animated movies and then you just race swap a few.
Even with black panther you could create some weird whatever magical universe where every character was black and so in this case black panther was created to be a white person, this off-course would be something according to your logic which your are using for justifying race swap. In this case the whole narrative change.
For me it's not about not liking the actors as a person because of how they look, they are people like everyone else. It's that every animated movie and series were having the same characters and we want the already established characters to be recognisable. If they wanted to make a spinoff with the same cast, but different in universe characters, i'd be completely fine with that. I am aware that the animations also deviated from the books, but they also had a different story and also made them damn well. But it's also different to change something that you only imagine as a source material vs what you already saw and got used to for basically the last two decades. Don't say that people are racist because the people want consistency with their characters that they already love and grew up with.
Are you watching BBC history that explain a lot bro the Vikings are the Norse they come from the Scandinavian countries please stop watching BBC they change history for political reasons

You comparing apples and oranges.. nobody cares about small movies.. I haven't even heard of christian bale moses movie and gods of egypt was flop.. I doubt masses even realised bane should be latino since non-comic fans of batman hasn't seen his face before.
If its new fantasy universe, races dont matter.. if its existing universe or pseudo-historial it can be a problem, however I think you can easily do DEI even in them, just create original story in them and not just cash grab with race changes.. The race thing is just easier to grasp than for people to say its a cashgrab for some reason.
It's not racist to change an established white character with a black one eh?
Ok, when are we getting a white black panther then?
@@AeralHero My guy, there’s a whole section in the video about that
Hey, as someone who doesn’t like the casting for Astrid or the little mermaid, I have never even heard of the movies you’re referring to as counter points, and if I had seen Christian Bale as Moses, I probably would have talked about that too. Like, it’s not just that I’ve never seen that movie, I’ve never seen one ad, promotional, and I’ve never heard a single soul even mention it
egyptians are mostly from semetic/arab people, which means they are more in the lighter complexion than blacks. so exodus and gods of egypt arent really historically wrong. also, there are so many anime live action adaptations that are criticized for whitewashing. choosing ghost in the shell as an example is nitpicking. bane has a white father. he isnt really that of a problem.
also, the race matters because its disrespectful. there are so many fictional stories where the race is not relevant but the race where the story comes from is apparent. imagine a black Sun Wukong. that is just disrespectful. i dont really have to "skip". some people needs to "skip", but other people out there doesnt have the guilt of racism and history of slavery/colonialism but has pride and respect to their own culture. and no, i am not white.
Had a lot of points I wanted to say but I see that the majority of the comments is making most of them. Race swapping is bad no matter the way it goes, which is why most of the movies you gave as examples where people weren't vocal flopped. They looked bad and were bad so no one went to watch them, which is exactly what I did for Little Mermaid and is exactly what I'll do for this adaptation and each movie or show that doesn't feel genuine. Which is the main problem with most of these movies, these race changes are being made deliberately and that leaves a bad taste in peoples mouths because it shows that the Directors and Studios don't give a damn about the worlds we grow to love from the first time, they just wanna push a narrative.
@@RagnaHearthfire We haven’t seen the movie. What do you think is going to be changed about a movie like this? And what is this narrative you’re afraid of? Diversity? The Viking culture was all about diversity. They mixed cultures all the time? You think Astrid is going to get on a soapbox and talk about slavery and the poverty to prison pipeline? What messages could this version of the film speak about that the first film, a film about breaking from tradition, forging a new path, and how being different is okay, DIDNT speak about?

I don't think people stayed quiet at Egyptian Gods, aside from this let's not use T'challa, how about John Stewart I've seen people get super mad, that he's a lighter shade than his comic counter part, I honestly don't care that Astrid is black (mainly because there is so many problems with the casting all around, except for Stoic he's fucking perfect) or what if Rocket and Icon were white. As for why some people get mad about Astrid it's mainly because Berk specifically is said to be out North, so again skin color makes kind of sense given that people at north have paler skin
L take. Calling everyone racist cuz cry baby
the biggest problem I currently have with the httyd live action is that they say they are staying close to the original movies but made active choices not to as in all the actors are wearing wigs if they had just made the choice to give the characters who had blonde hair in the original blonde wigs that it would be leagues better than what they are doing right now but right now they are actively choosing to move away from having blonde characters
additionally you might not have noticed but most characters outside if this example that usually end up getting cast with a black actor where originally redheads which by any and all standards are a minority of their own so they really are just changing one minority for another
Bruh, sure its fantasy, but it is still heavily inspired by Scandinavia which had MOSTLY white people. Shoe honing a black character is fine aslong as it is explained which it never is. Bane has a white father and a Latina mother. What's wrong with bald Tom Hardy whose face is 90% covered by a mask and voice change? Mr. and Mrs. Hofferson are both Vikings and Astrid is blonde in origin. That's not even close to an argument. And bro just had a strong point with black panther but lost it. Wanna a black character = write a story for him, and make him interesting, so you don't need to f-up someone's origin and view of an existing character.
Everyone talks about Astrid, why is NOBODY talking about what they did to Ruffnut? The poor character doesn't even look related to her TWIN anymore
It's more about how you know and like the character. We saw Astrid as white in the animation, we loved her as white. Nick Fury is white in the comics, but we saw him as black for the first time and we loved him. The same goes for Heimdall. It's also interesting that most raceswapped characters are ginger.
Well bane mother is latina and father white so i don't see problem , ghost in shell ok but people were attacking dragon ball evolution and moses could be white and even ferro there were many dynasty un Egypt and Gods of Egyapt there are greene god in Egypt mit they can be any collar
The ghost in the shell backlash makes less sense than any of them... The entire premise behind Ghost in the Shell is the fact that she, and many others, were "ghosts" who could literally become anybody she wanted to be. They can make her new bodies that look like anyone. It's literally the name of the show...
Dragons aren't real but the Vikings are. Vikings were real people with real descendants who care about how their ancestors are portrayed.
Motoko from ghost in the shell is a poor example though... The point was her body was a blank slate. Heck, the source material mentions her body being one based on a sex model with military grade specs specifically for espionage and assassinations.
@@GinsuSher Is she or is she not Japanese? The movie LITERALLY had her character be Japanese until an accident and then she turned into Scarlet Johansson. The central plot of the movie centers around a literal race swap

Don't know what's all the fuss about. Gal doesn't look out of place, in the available promo materials at least. On the raceswaping subject in general... Look, I think it's a really tough job to satisfy fans of a fantasy book when it comes to casting in adaptation. Yeah, people complain about characters having "wrong" skin colour, but they also complain about them being not muscular enough, or too muscular, being too pretty or not pretty enough, too skinny or too fat, wrong eye colour, not being naturally blonde, not scarred enough and so on. I don't think it's fair to single out one thing that those people whine about, and paint them as racist
@@ОлегГанисевский-г8ъ I understand your point. But my argument is not that anyone who dislikes this casting is racist. My argument is that anyone who doesn’t like the casting for a very SPECIFIC reason are racist.
The people who use “historical accuracy” to explain decisions made for a film where “historical accuracy” wasn’t something even the people behind the film were concerned about is a dog whistle.
@@Age_Of_Nostalgia it's kinda interesting topic to explore. I think it’s fair to not like race swapping in general, I don’t think any of the movies you mentioned performed that well (besides Batman). In my opinion if you’re converting anything to the big screen it’s always in your best interest to translate it as close as possible to the original work. Once you start race swapping and changing things to try and appeal to a larger audience is when you lose the fans of the original work. Just look at Snow White, they changed a lot to the original story and ended up losing everyone who was an actual fan.

I agree there aren't enough voices of people who complain when they should complain. Bane wasn't nearly as big or buff enough, Major...whatever her name was from GITS should have been an asian actress. Just as much that nobody should be fine with Chris Pratt playing Black Panther. It should just stay true to the source material AND then find the best person for the job. While there can be a bit more leeway for Marvel and DC, it shouldn't be too much. Why more leeway there? Because you have that multiverse stuff where you already had 500 versions in every color of every character anyway.
You use the Egypt movie as a example but its not a pre-existing ip thats how I see it if you made a new Samurai Jack and made him white or whatever I would be mad and I know what the original one was so your missing the point here.
These big movie companies want to make a live action movie of said movie which already is not needed like the Pinocchio with Tom Hanks which was accurate I guess right but was super bad and unnecessary like I watched the original when I was but the movie came out like 1940"s which you may ask why is this relavent it is because Disney was able to just enhance the audio and was able to still benifit from them.
If somone wants to make a black Mario ask yourself "is this a creative problem or a racist problem?" realy think about it because you can make a brand new character with similar themes and then from that make an entirely new identity which I do think is more interesting than just taking mario and giving him a skin change or worse a stereotypical personification of a black guy in movies and to help my aguement I have a great example of this and its the the new friendly neighborhood Spider-man Miles Morales which is seprate from Peter parker's Spiderman so I do think this is possible but not by replacing old characters.

So everyone realizes you dont actually get your full ancestry when doing those tests right? That black character is now played by a white actor.
Can you now imagine how we feel??
This video explains it better than I can

yeah i dont see the point of changing caracters the caracters were made like that in the original so it should be cast like that too colour does not matter but the caracter has to act and look like the actualy caracter from the movie but if your gonna swap whole damn cultures it does not work. they should just keep it as original as possible black caracters black and white caracters white and whatever other race the same too it just makes it less confusing
This video is 100% correct and unfathomably based
Of course they had to make a live action.
i agree with most of the points up until the end when you made the comparison with other movies and their changes, the ghostbusters remake was just terrible, it was a horrible story with humor that was meant to make everyone happy which in turn made it unfunny, now with the gay and straight couples being straight can be part of the character because of a certain love interest, same with having a gay character, most people honestly arent paying attention to race until it is swapped, no one is going to question a charecter who is already a certain race, like you said, unless race is baked into the character than well it doesnt really matter, but thats just my opinion
1. That BBC clip is extremely misleading. The vikings didn't take the children back home that they had with the women they r*ped and pillaged other than when they took them as slaves. Scandinavia is one of the the most ethnically homogeneous places on the planet.
2. When it comes to the little mermaid, she had red hair. How many non white people do you see with natural red hair?
3. You calling people racist for having attachment to characters the way they were originally portrayed is disgusting.
Minority representation is necessary but Hollywood is so artisticly bankrupt right now that they would rather recycle old proven ip's instead of making new ones. It is possible, look at Moana, Coco and the the original Mulan, they are fantastic and don't get hate.
@@SamuelMarko I don’t really see how the BBC clip is misleading. In fact both clips illustrate the point that Vikings went all over the world and mixed with other cultures. Yes they don’t mention r*pe but I’m not sure how not mentioning that disproves anything. The second clip states that unlike what most believe Vikings weren’t as homogeneous as we think. There was a diversity of appearance. BUT NONE OF THAT flies in the face of the LARGER POINT that this is FICTION. Media has always taken liberties with Viking culture and never been 100 percent accurate. This is an excepted truth. But the fact that people are choosing to be upset about inaccuracies THIS TIME and with THIS ACTOR means something. It’s not racist to have an attachment to a character, but it’s is racist to think of all manner of reasons why a black person can’t be in a movie where race plays not factor in the overall story. Also, to your point about red hair, you’re right you don’t see many non white people with red hair. You also don’t see many non white people breathe underwater and get cursed by sea witches…
@@Age_Of_Nostalgia wow, you really are just completely incapable of self reflection, aren't you?
@@drewblackmatter6669 So do you actually have ANYTHING constructive to add to the conversation or are you just going to regurgitate talkings points and make weird insults?
I am like two mins into this damn thing im already feeling tempted by the dislike button with him playing the race card calling everybody including myself racist who disagrees bcuz we don’t like race swaps despite our valid criticisms its clear that this person has a horrible take
@@joshuahenderson3444 Again. The point being made is not “anyone who hates this is racist”. I lay out two common responses to castings like this and refute them. While also saying THESE SPECIFIC responses indicate racist undertones
@@joshuahenderson3444 I LITERALLY say in the beginning, if white people taking roles from people of color doesn’t bother you but this does, you are. I don’t just paint everyone who doesn’t like it as racist
@@Age_Of_Nostalgia here we go again with the race card white ppl this white ppl that 🙄😒 what’s next you gonna use slavery as an excuse or an example to backup your horrible takes on soulless remakes now too?
@@Age_Of_Nostalgia ”2 common responses” thats jus two ppl who you consider are racist but the majority of ppl with common sense that know better reject this crap for a variety of reasons of which you failed to understand and are being labeled of which they are not btw
@@Age_Of_Nostalgia here we go again with the race card white ppl this white ppl that 🙄😒 what’s next you gonna use slavery as an example or an excuse to backup your horrible takes on soulless remakes now too?
5:08 To be fair everything before the inception of evolution theory would be culture/nationality and not race. Since race as a concept didnt exist until evolution theory did. Prior to that it was all about nationality and cultural history. Race isn't a real thing. At least not empirically or scientifically. It's an entirely made up social structure that we need to be done with completely. The whole idea implies there are groups of more evolved humans and less evolved humans and the color of your skin can tell which one you are which is laughably stupid.
Why I keep expecting the human race to care about truth instead of feelings is beyong me though. You'd think I would lose hope.
I'm with you on this though if the story itself doesn't care about skin why should we?
