    I pre-ordered mine yesterday. My favorite thing about this machine is that it’s turn on and go. Some folks don’t like to fiddle with adjustments or do I have it set correctly…… some of us just want to enjoy the experience/hunt. Long time Deus 2 user/Etrac/Equinox 600/Tesoro/AT Pro/Gold/ whites. I’ve ran a lot of different machines.

    I’ve been disgesting it all all since the debut wrapped up yesterday. I was hoping for a model that would be at least be at the Legend, Maniticore and Deus level detector features, and a wireless option which has basically become a must have feature for me, and only one company offers - XP.
    I had put off my purchase decision until the reveal yesterday to see what level of detectors they would be going up against. Now that we know these go against the Score series andthe Xterra Elite levels for the most part, I am going to proceed with my XP purchase...

    I am a total Newb to detecting and have only used a friend’s AT Pro which I would consider "OK" at best . With that said I don’t think it was Garret’s goal to compete with the upper spectrum of detectors rather just compete with the $500 - $700 detector range. However, as the Author of this post said without trying it one should not assume it's going to suck. For a beginner like myself trying to decipher good hits from junk while getting so many false signals is my main challenge. Some 50 years ago I buried coins in my backyard and I was not able to find them with the AT pro . Back during the same time period, a neighbor dug up a couple of Bust Half Dollars in their yard. Recently I asked the new owner of that house if I could scan the yard , all I came up with was a bunch of junk that was hitting between 74- 84 on the garret. Once again my inexperience is probably a factor and I don’t want to spend $1500 on a top of the line detector.

    • @MentalMetal
      @MentalMetal  4 месяца назад +1

      Thanks for the comment but most of us would dig targets hitting from 74-84 on any machine. As you learn your detector you will pick up certain nuances where you will know how some of that junk sounds and you will avoid it over time but it takes time to learn your detector. That goes for any detector. If you buried coins in your back yard 50 years ago, there could be a lot of factors keeping you from detecting them. Depth, soil conditions, EMI from the house, the search program you were using, the amount of DISC that was set etc. If you buried those coins down past 10 inches, then you probably won't hear them IMO. I used to own an AT Pro and found a lot of good stuff with it.

    • @musicman102357
      @musicman102357 4 месяца назад +1

      @@MentalMetal Its possible I buried them somewhat deep , I know the general area . I watch a lot of videos and experienced people make it look much easier then it is. I did dig up a penny and dime but they were only a few inches deep .

    • @MentalMetal
      @MentalMetal  4 месяца назад

      You may might want to try it when the ground is wet (really saturated). You might get a better signal and if they are deep you just might hear them. Its hard to say though not knowing your conditions or your set up.

    Not sure how this machine will perform...however IMO I must say its aesthetics are fantastic! Absolutely love the blue control box and the accented arm cuff. Also so glad Garrett finally introduced a machine with the control box mounted on a handle instead of directly on the shaft itself. If it performs as good as it looks...watch out!

    "We need a good American made detector". Absolutely!! But I have no illusions that it will be priced competitively. Let's say for example that Garrett produced a machine 100% equivalent in performance and build quality to the Legend. Do you think they could sell it for $550? As someone that worked in manufacturing for a good part of my life, I can say that it's just to expensive to build products in the USA. And not JUST because of labor costs! Insurance, Taxes, Regulations, Liability, Lawsuits, Disability claims, ... and did I mention Lawsuits? This country is suing itself right out of business! I digress...

However, I’ve had 5 Garrett’s detectors since 2000 and have been very happy and have had excellent customer service. That being said, I’ve been swinging the Nokta Macro Legend for 2 years and also love their machine and service. If Garrett would have came out with the Vortex in 2022 I’d be swinging it instead. Also, if you are new to detecting and buy a case, pinpointer, digger, pouch and a couple more coils, you’ll have $1000 invested. A little more than the Legend

      Oh don't say such negative things or the cancel culture crowd on detecting forums will pound you into ground like fossil. Garrett may not be planning on yearly license fees or subscription methods to continue using the "upgrade" you purchased. People are "oh so happy" about this software upgrade feature to get more features. As with most things in life a good notion in the beginning turns into an insidious $$$$ machine.
      You best get ready for the greed-meister of the metal detecting world to put THAT into place. MoneyLab will do it in a heartbeat. Then another, then another... The next thing you know it is considered "normal" and it will be yet another yearly fee you have to pay to enjoy something you THOUGHT you had already paid for up front. Take a look at the "greats" like Micro$oft, and Ci$co. Dollar the buyer to death forever. You "own" the hardware, but the software is what they "own" and you must pay for it by subscription. Think it can't happen to a wee little metal detector? Think again. And Garrett is softening up the herds of sheep that think it's so cool! And it is cool, until somebody twists it around for continuous profit (subscription fees/license fees,etc.) By the way, for those sheep reading this, Garrett is not being attacked. They had a good idea with good intentions but someone else not so nice and good WILL run with this crap in a bad direction. History tells us greed always perverts.

    The sales model of this thing reminds me of Ford's ideas with electric cars and making people pay for added features like heated seats or cruise control. Personally I think its kind of sheisty...I owned the Legend which is around the same price point and Nokta continues to put out free updates which seemingly blow this thing out of the water in comparison. A company shouldnt hold back on features while dangling the proverbial carrot in front of people for a couple of features that should be mandatory anyways...how about releasing a full featured machine that competes features wise with the rest on the market at that price point to begin with and continue to improve it...? So far Im not hearing that it has ground balance or frequency scan/ noise cancellation, 40 khz, sensitivity control or any rich selection of audio tones/pitches/profiles. The display is uninspiring....maybe the performance will make up for all those shortfalls but if this is it then the USA truly doesnt innovate anymore.

    • @MentalMetal
      @MentalMetal  4 месяца назад

      Its amazing how much negativity is being stirred up. I'll hold off judging until it comes out. I do remember a time when Nokta's Legend was not so good either but over time they finally got it right but that didn't happen overnight. But I wouldn't say they were actually innovative. They just copied Minelab's features, added in a flashlight and vibrating handle. I will admit, it was built better and I have come to like it over time. Maybe Garrett will do the same and add in the features everyone is complaining about. It does have ground balancing btw. It doesn't have ground tracking but no one really uses that feature so I'm not what all the fuss is about on that subject. Who knows maybe Garrett isn't trying to appeal to the other brands or customers. They have enough of a user base and realize their brand loyalty will carry them for their existing customers. But no one really knows what anyone is doing anymore, X-Terra Pro, Elite, Score, Double Score, Tripple Score... the market is insane right now.. over saturated with mid-level detectors. Just my 2 cents.

    • @qj8933
      @qj8933 4 месяца назад

      At the end of day Garrett will have decided its fate with what they took how many years to produce? I will be the first to admit that Ive never owned a Garret metal detector and maybe there will be enough curious people out there to take the plunge and spend $440-$600. But than again thats why we have you for...LOL so you can buy and show it to us so we can make up our own minds. I guess when you are a consumer and deciding whether to plunk down half a G note on something or not you tend to lift the hood and kick the tires a bit. We must be critical, for some they may only be able to buy a new machine once every how many years. We cant always rose tint things when theyre evident but again I look forward to your vids reviewing it. I have criticisms of the manticore and Deus II too. Manticore has poor battery life in high conductor mode, D2 RC falls off, etc.

    Not enough price difference in the models for their strategy to work. My guess is that most people who are serious about buying this machine will just get the VX9, which already appears competitively priced when features are compared to other machines. I hope they didn’t release it too early like the Apex - I think that hurt Garrett sales because it got bad reviews early and everyone saw those, but then when software was upgraded, it turned out to be much better.

    Competition between detector companies is fierce with features and price points distinguishing detectors before detectorists begin testing them. Garrett knows its competition is stiff. What do they offer at first glance with the Votex that Nokta Legend doesn't have? Is their 3-tier TID on the VX9 for $600 a strong enough selling point? How user-adjustable is the Vortex? Programmable target ID? Disc adjustable? Are audio tones adjustable? Is a tone break adjustable? Pitch adjustable? Notch filters? Range of sensitivity levels? Is it EMI susceptible? Despite having seven freqs, how many does the simultaneous multi-frequency mode actually use (you might be surprised that it isn't all of them)? TID is usually secondary to audio quality, so the audio tones should be polyphonic or informative. It appears the Vortex audio is not being marketed as anything out of the ordinary.
    To me, the Vortex has less of what other detector companies bring upfront. It has fewer features and less user adjustability. The non-ferrous and simple ferrous TID scales are similar to most detectors that differentiate these two signals as a matter of course. Other detectors have various strategies to deal with ferrous. The added Complex Ferrous scale is obviously intended to be the major selling point. Apparently, it shows a TID when both an iron signal and a non-ferrous signal are produced by the same target, such as a flat iron or bent nails (which produce eddy currents similar to non-ferrous along with the common magnetic domain alignment and relaxation that identifies iron, which confuses the TID and causes the high-tone blips when hunting in nail fields for most detectors. How effective is this 3-tier TID in differentiating bottle caps and nails from non-ferrous at depth? Does the TID disappear or become erratic beyond a certain depth, say deeper than eight inches? Is the 3-tier TID operationally useable in a field of nails and iron junk? It would have been best if Garrett showed its capabilities upfront rather than its current sterile milquetoast demonstrations.
    Garrett's Vortex sales video implies the machine is deeper and more accurate than single-freq machines, with the caveat that this really applies in areas with severe ground mineralization. In other words, a single freq machine can be as deep, if not deeper, if mineralization is not an issue. This is nothing unique to Garrett or its technology. Using galvanized nails instead of iron square nails in the Garrett video comes across to me as disingenuous. Garrett has to know that various detectorists are posting videos of their tests which are far more rigorous. It would behoove Garrett to demonstrate the Vortex similarly, especially since they claim the multi-dimensional technology is superior. Even the name "Multi-dimensional" is cringe-worthy marketing hype. There is nothing "multi-dimensional" about induction balance detectors or the physics involved. Signal processing is common to all detectors, they each have to deal with contaminated soil, iron, and non-ferrous signals.
    If I were Garrett I would stay away from hype. You can label MD-MF technology as "Cryptoforensic Quantum Balance Taxiconomy" but it means nothing. They can sell multi-freq signal processing as "Postcognitive Paraelectrodynamic Morphoelectroscopy" but the detector community of 2024 is not as easily led by the nose as in the past when slick marketing and bright colors sold detectors. People demand performance today. Maybe Garrett's algorithm does it somewhat better? We'll soon see.
    Once detectorists start testing the Vortex against its competitors the results will speak for themselves.

    Until we know what the cost of the entry model is, I couldn’t say if it’s good or bad. If it’s a good detector, I think it’s a good idea. Rather than buying a simplex, then upgrade to a score, then a Legend, etc, you can start small, just upgrade. I’m sure hoping the upgrade by software is way cheaper than a new detector

      @@MentalMetal I am certain it works great. I have a Garrett AT Pro and love it. What I mean by "cripplewear" is, all the hardware is there and works, but the full capability of the hardware is locked by the firmware which is unlocked via payment.
      I understand what they are trying to do, but unfortunately this monetary tactic is pretty universally regarded as scummy, no matter what the product is. Usually hackers take it as a challenge to unlock the features without paying.

    Just not sure about any of the three variants of this Vortex. Missing a few features that most mfg’s are incorporating in even so-called basic or lower end machines, right out the gate doesn’t sit well. Who knows until it gets in some good testers hands though as to how it’ll actually perform. I’m not sure it’ll find a home in my current lineup of seven Minelab and Nokta machines but I won’t judge it fully until it hits the streets and we see some feedback from experienced users…the last thing Garrett needs is another Apex abortion to deal with.

    The facts are that Garrett’s commercial sales are obviously subsidizing their hobby detectors, because they’ve completely lost any competitive advantages years ago. You say that people are dogging it without having it in hand, and I’m one of them. I buy every single new detector that comes out, put 100 hours on the, then sell them or keep them. That lets me form my own opinion instead of rely on anyone else’s. In the past 5 years, no other detector has been as big a disappointment as the Apex, and I’m calling it now that this won’t be any different. But I’ll check back here after 100 hours to say, “I told ya so} 😂. The worst thing about this detector is it got Calabash Digger making videos again, which is the biggest downside of this release 🤪

      @@MentalMetal Because they have a track record of disappointing releases, and haven't put out a good detector since the AT Pro, which was only so good because it was waterproof and priced right for the time. The new Garrett Vortex aka “Smurf machine” is a disaster! Doesn’t even compete with Minelabs entry level machines. Garrett cost cutting all over this machine with the same coil/headphones as the 15 year old at pro. If only Garrett spent as much money on product development as celebrity colaberations they may have been competitive. Garrett is going downhill fast.
