Water GILDING - how to apply GOLD LEAF for Byzantine Icons process video tutorial

This video shows the process of water gilding with genuine gold leaf, using a mixture of red bole clay and rabbit skin glue as an adhesive. The technique is less wasteful (and less stressful) because it uses wax paper to apply the gold leaf, preventing it from getting too messy. The gold must be varnished to make it permanent. As I've gotten older I've lost my patience for intensive work like that. I used to be an animal sculptor doing highly detailed work. When I look at my old stuff now I can't believe I ever could do that. Losing that quality/ability is one of the worst things that has ever happened to me - a side effect of years of anti-depressants. So, I just admire the work of others now.
Gathering No Moss, I lost almost all my creative abilities due to antidepressants used off label. It's the worst detox you'll ever do. Very gradually ease off them over a 6 month period. I promise 6 months is rough enough. I've been robbed of 15 years of my life. My memory is coming back as well as brain function. Their advantages were not worth the price I paid. If you're giving up what you love maybe they are "depressants" Ask your dr if you still need them. I can even hold a camera steady again.
@@brrjohnson8131 Thanks. I haven't taken them for years but nothing returned to the way it was. My life is littered with projects started, in an attempt to kick-start my creative brain, but it never does. From someone who has filled hundreds of sketchbooks with ideas in my life to not even owning a pencil. At 62, I've accepted it.
I know this sounds dumb but, take some classes where you’re required to finish things, it’s a really good feeling to finish things I know, I’ve never taken antidepressants and I have always had a problem with finishing things. I think that it will make you feel better to just finish small things or things that you’ll be held accountable for. I’m not a trained professional yet but I’m going to school to be a psychologist/therapist so ya know I’m not all knowing but I hope you do take a class it’s really helpful when you’re like me and really bad about starting things but never finishing them
Gathering No Moss never ever to late to find art! Maybe trying new media could help. I hope you’ll find you creativity back!
I hope you get it back. I went 2 years without doing anything art related. It sucks.
loved the shot where the clay mixture reflected the sky
cool!
Yeah me to!
Okay so the red bole looked really neat on its own actually
I love every step in the process
I really liked the texture only the first layer gave. Could be very beautiful for a modern abstract painting!
I loved it too! It was beautiful.
yeah i didnt understand the need for a 2nd layer... or more
i mean, there r easier ways to get the finished affect of this product
Dianaz Here As a full time metalsmith, I understand there are easier ways to doing a great of the work I do. The tools and equipment today, maybe easier work of ancient techniques. But as an artist, I usually prefer to do things with the older hand tools and not take the easier route. I agree that the first layer of this gold leafing technique resulted in a really beautiful textured look. But it wasn’t suited the the overall halo design the artist was aiming for. In art, easier isn’t always better. 🙏🏼😉

It is pure 24k gold leaf used ;)
Fascinating. This is the first time I have seen 3 layers. Ii knew gold would adhere to the red clay but I had no idea gold would adhere to gold. Beautiful work
Очень большой расход золота
The glue used in bole is called "hide glue" and is based on proteins from hides that has been boiled and the dried and cut into pellets. Preparation with premixed red bole:
Premixed bole is in a wet paste form composed of Armenian clay and water. It must be blended with rabbit skin glue for use as follows:
- Soak 10 grams of rabbit skin glue in 200 ml of water overnight.
- Heat the mixture in a double boiler.
- Gradually add the bole into the glue mixture in a ratio of 1 volume of paste to 1 volume of glue mixture.
- Stir it well and let settle overnight.
Wrong information.
Correct information :
Water to glue ratio -> 1/10 = 10 grm to "100" ml water ( distiled, preferebly, because tap water can contain particles of iron and other substances ) - let it set over night
- boil the mixture but never passing above 60°C, or it will destroy the molecular bonding ( an will make it unnefective ).
- mix 1 part of the "warmed" glue solution with 2 of the bole ( clay )
- aply warm
- let it dry, preferebly 24 hours to be perfect
Important : the burnish of the gold is made "after" the gold is aplied, because what is actually happening is the moldind of the clay itself by the rubbing of the stone, the gold leaf ( with just a few microns ) is only molding itself with the clay. Burnishing can only be done at least 4/5 hours after the gold leaf is applied and can't be done the day after or much time after.
The gold leaf as to be apllied by soaking the clay with a solution of glue and the water ( 1/9 is enough ), with a few drops of lemon and a few of alcool ( not super necessary but it is better ). Gold leaf must be applied quickly after the solution.
@@eclipsesolar8345 Thank you, thank you for your excellent knowledge/advice of applying gold leaf ! I once started a gold leaf business that failed, partly because of not knowing this information. I lost money & confidence in my work & dropped my business. It was painful & disappointing but still in my heart is a desire to gold leaf again, this time with the knowledge that was missing....
Southampton UK
Whats the purpose of the bole?
@@mydemon Gold leaf is very, very thin - only about 2 microns thick. If you lay gold leaf on the white, gesso, background it will look grey, so the bole is there to provide a warm, dark, colour against which the gold will show up. The bole also acts like a "couch", or a pad, for the gold to lie on - gesso is a very hard surface and would make burnishing a gold layer almost impossible. There are different colours of bole, I've discovered, but the most common are Armenian red bole and also a yellow bole.

Ive been a water gilder for over 5 years working in a framing company, your technique is very strange to me. Your burnishing off so much gold, you seem to be undoing so much work with repeated processes, why are you using your breathe to activate the glue, instead of mixing a dilute size mix and applying with a brush? it must take hours for that thick layer of bole to dry in a single application?
those questions are kinda negative, sorry about that. I'm really impressed with how well the wax paper hold the leaf compared to a typical gilders brush, why do you choose that over transfer leaf?
I wonder if it is for durability, or maybe simply tradition. I know icons must follow certain traditions
indeed this technique is not suitable for frames. It works best on flat surfaces. It has the advantage that you don't have to deal with loose gold. for some people (like me) :-) having the leaf attached to wax paper for precise application is less stressful than using the suede pad, staticky brush and a leaf that can blow away or curl up with any air current or bit of static. It's really just a matter of preference.
What tool do you use to burnish?
@@oaktharas The tool looks like a piece of polished agate stone - find it at any gem show or rock hound place. Use anything to burnish that is very smooth and hard as this is delicate gold. You don't want wood which will grab the gold with its texture.
@@luizab221 Wax paper is a novel idea and one I will use, thanks! However, why you applied 3 very expensive coats of gold leaf, while rubbing most of it off, is still a mystery. As is the breath thing. I don't see how the gold will stick to the clay once it is burnished. Its not sticky. So won't the gold come off? I would use glue under the gold leaf. Also wish you had shown the final varnish coat.
this is amazing, beautiful, i love it
