  • Spent a couple of hours or so here a few days ago, hope you enjoy the walk and drive. As always don't forget to watch in the highest quality your device can handle for the best visual experience.
Cragside is a Victorian Tudor Revival country house near the town of Rothbury in Northumberland, England. It was the home of William Armstrong, 1st Baron Armstrong, founder of the Armstrong Whitworth armaments firm. An industrial magnate, scientist, philanthropist and inventor of the hydraulic crane and the Armstrong gun, Armstrong also displayed his inventiveness in the domestic sphere, making Cragside the first house in the world to be lit using hydroelectric power. The estate was technologically advanced; the architect of the house, Richard Norman Shaw, wrote that it was equipped with "wonderful hydraulic machines that do all sorts of things". In the grounds, Armstrong built dams and lakes to power a sawmill, a water-powered laundry, early versions of a dishwasher and a dumb waiter, a hydraulic lift and a hydroelectric rotisserie.
A few years ago a new 17 metre (56 feet) 12kW Archimedes Screw was installed and is now responsible for powering around 10-15% of the house's electricity consumption.
Cragside is named after Cragend Hill above the house, and is surrounded by an extensive rock garden, with a collection of rhododendrons, one of which is named after Lady Armstrong, who made a considerable contribution to the design and construction of the gardens, and large plantings of mostly coniferous trees. Among these is the tallest Scots pine in Britain, at a height of over 131 feet (40 m).
Armstrong continued to buy land after the purchase of the original site and by the 1880s the gardens and grounds comprised some 1,700 acres with the wider estate, including Armstrong's agricultural holdings, extending to 15,000 acres and to over 16,000 acres according to the historian David Cannadine. David Dougan records the traditional claim that Armstrong planted over seven million trees in the gardens and parkland. The estate is a sanctuary for some of the last remaining red squirrel colonies in England.
Cragside has featured in an Open University Arts Foundation Course, Jonathan Meades's documentary series Abroad Again in Britain, BBC One's Britain's Hidden Heritage, Glorious Gardens from above, and Hidden Treasures of the National Trust and ITV's series Inside the National Trust. The 2017 film The Current War was partly filmed at the estate.
Cragside also featured as the basis for the representation of Lockwood Manor in the movie Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.

Greetings from Canada Ray. 🍁 Wow. The house and grounds look like something from a fairytale. The colours are striking, vibrant and lush. As always, especially the greens. I’d say Lady Armstrong knew what she was doing. I could be wrong, but it looked like umbrella trees along the footpath through the forest. One of my favourites. Most noticeable on the drive is the range in and of the different colours, as well as even new ones thrown in, depending on the amount of sunlight or shade. Blues, pinks and purples. You can see this even on the road’s surface. Gotta admit I was getting a bit mesmerized. It was almost like being on the drive with you. Started to get a bit sleepy lol. That driver at the end though. 🙄🤡Apparently our biggest winter storm is hitting the prairies starting sometime in the early hours of Monday and going right through to Tuesday bringing 10-20cm of snow. I’m heading out for a walk now while it’s sunny and mild. Ty. Loved the video. Raybo1uk always delivers. Stay well til next time. ❤🇨🇦🇬🇧👋🤗🌞

Awww hiya Jill 🤗 I’m so glad you enjoyed this video, I’ll be going back to different areas of the grounds to do different walks as I’ve not seen the majority of them yet. It’s a huge site so there is loads to see. If you ever come over you CAN be on the drive with me, nothing like the real thing 😃
Yeah that driver was a fool overtaking on the hill when he had no idea if anything was coming the other way.
It sounds like you are going to have lots of snow ⛄️ 😳 please take care and keep safe and warm, hopefully it will pass soon 🙏🏻 Thank you as always for your lovely comments which are really appreciated 🤗❤️🇨🇦🇬🇧🌲🌳
