The Qing were the ruling Manchu dynasty that controlled China from Beijing, but in 1850 Hong Xiuquan, the Taiping leader proclaimed himself the brother of Jesus and established a Christian communal like state in Nanjing and controlled large parts of Southern China. It took the western backed Qing government 14 years to defeat the Taipings at the cost of 20 million lives. In this scene the guys with the long hair are the Taipings
It took 14 years not because the western world backed the Qing but due to the inconpetancy of the Qing government to realize that the world is changing. Like in the movie, you can see just how technologically inferior the Qings were compared to the Taiping rebels. One side had cannons and matchlocks while one side were still charging in with sabers and shields like it's god damn 1300s. The Qings was fighting the battle that way for ages and I have to admit that bows and arrows do have a faster firing rate but a row of musket can drop more men in a line (As seen in the Napoleonic Wars) vs a column of archers at a longer range and this made the Taiping rebels tactically superior for a decade as they had more blackpowder weapons against the ancient Qings. It was only after losing all of the regions in Nanjing and Jiangdong sans-Shanghai then did the Qing realized how backwards they are and quickly pleaded with the foreign powers to send aid and military expertise to help them. By 1858, the Qing army had close to no muskets but when 1860 rolled in, 2 of the 8 Banner Army were armed with muskets and with the newly formed foreign-led Qing legions like the Ever Victorious Army (常勝軍) then did the Qing beat back the Taiping rebels.
No wonder the Taiping fighting with muskets(obsolete kind but still...)I wonder what the result might be if they just fought with (up to that date) European tactic and weaponries.
Its not well documented but the Taiping Rebellion was possibly the bloodiest civil war in history with only the An Lushan Rebellion and Russian Civil War coming close to overall deaths (though in proportion to population the American Civil War was devastating) With an estimated 25 million deaths this was a terrible terrible war- a toll equivalent to the whole of WW1.

The history records that Qing dynasty has gotten corrupt, and grew excessively cruel against its subjects (non-Manchus) in the turn of the 19th century. Western nations sold opium for silver, which was the foundation for Qing dynasty's currency. BTW, flintlock firearms have long re-loading time and difficult to make. And unlike composite bows, it cannot be used during wet weather. It wasn't until the introduction of cartridge breech-loading rifle that stopped Qing from using composite bow.
Yes, the Chinese Qing dynasty also had a huge problem sourcing silver to make their currency. They would import massive amounts of silver into China from Europe. This gave western nations a huge bargaining chip that led to the opium wars.

I was asking myself the same question. I would argue its an innaccuracy. From what I understand both sides had limited fire power and were mainly fighting with traditional armaments (bows, swords, etc...). The Qing army had yet to undergo any heavy westernization (happens during the Self-strengthening movement post-Taiping)
Black powder guns and cannons were widely used even before Manchu conquered china by Ming( self made and import from Portugal)Even more westernized firearms were equipped after 1840.
Does anyone else get the impression that, despite how extraordinarily well they might understand and use bladed weapons, no one is this movie really comprehends how firearms work? Using cannon loaded with solid shot for extremely close range anti-cavalry fires, for example. Or expecting smooth-bored muskets to have greater range and effective accuracy than recurve bows? Also, I must note that the film's visuals did NOT give the impression that one side was massively out-numbered by the other - indeed, at first, I thought it was the Taiping side who came up short.

Kurosawa is a great director, but the efficiency of firearms (taken over by the Japanese from the the Portuguese) is displayed in a let's say optimistic way, regarding fire frequency, range and accuracy. Two shots in a minute were the maximum, the impact of musket shot . The scatter of the shots was high and the probability of hitting a single enemy rapidly fell on longer distance than about 50 m, and the impact of a shot was potentially deadly only up to 200 m, at least against armoured men.
You're thinking of early matchlock muskets, these are more modern fusils. Of course, still VERY outdated compared to what other nations had at the time, like the Europeans and japanese, but still really useful for the then war situation. Besides, two shots a minute is terrible, there are accounts of well trained soldiers during the Napoleonic era getting three and even four shots a minute, combined with revolving fire, it was devastating. For two shots a minute you'd be dealing with a rifled musket for marksmen, who DO prioritize good accuracy and range over speed.
When you attend public school in the United States, you learn all about the American Civil War. Students come away not knowing (or caring) that there were other massively important events happening in the world during that time, France invaded Mexico and the United States could not do anything about it (see the Clint Eastwood movie, Two Mules for Sister Sarah), there was a civil war in China that made the American Civil War look like a dust up between children, and in and around it all, the Opium Wars, the result of which is affecting us now. Japan's militarization and hostility were in large part a result of what they saw the West was doing to China during the Opium Wars period, and that militarization led to WWII. The history of the United States, contrary to what was taught in my youth, is not entirely congruent with the history of the world and I am still not certain that most people have understood that. The Opium Wars are also part of the reason why China is hostile to the West now; they have not forgotten their Century of Humiliation.
Wrong. China is only hostile to the west now because of current western hostilities and provocations. China is trying to prevent repeating another century of humiliation.
The father of all revolutions, the father of all wars, the anti-feudal liberation, the farmer's war, THE TAIPING REVOLUTION. China was not made in a day. Love to China from Nepal.

As Christianity had became extremely popular in China, aswell as many han saw it as a way to rid themselves of the foreign invaders, the Qing(Manchurians) So stop regurgitating judas/masonic revisionism
There’s no need to be accurate, the main function is to create an arrow carpet to cover the infantry and suppress their opponent’s musketeers in order to get closer to the enemy
I would not really deny your interpretation, but rather generalize it. For Kurosawa, the triumph of the new ways neither is something to celebrate, nor is his fascination of the old ways nostalgic, but I'm inclined to say that the clash of the old and new ways reveals in a way the futility of human efforts. It all reminds me of a famous haiku, in which the grass on a former battlefield is all what remains of the warriors' dreams.
:) I agree. Chinese have the right touch for mass choreography, but the imagination of Chinese directors in close combat scenes is only impressing when it comes to Kong Fu fighting.
Fight for life, fight for brothers. Until the second world war, most people in China had no sense of state, so the death rate of generals was very high, because they had to rush ahead. Soldiers would not fight for their country, but they would definitely fight for their brothers.
Yeah, Kurosawa really did want to show the futility of war... especially in Ran. Conflicts in many of his works are often caused by trivial (In teh context) things and result is great tragedy.

@wingolf22 nope, volley fire, artillery, rocket barrages and even use of coloured rockets as signal flares were all made in china by the 14th century and probably earlier. however, the manchus who invaded in the 17th century being nomadic raiders, found the use of firearms both alien and abhorrent, thus their usage declined amongst imperial troops who reverted to bows and arrows. taiping rebels didnt have this problem and wouldve won had the empress not brought in european troops to crush it.

Taiping were usually lucky to have a real hodge-podge of sub-standard or obsolete or worn-out guns sold to them at inflated prices by unscrupulous European and American arms dealers. Bayonets were another rarity for Taiping troops, while even the Qing troops mainly had smoothbore matchlock weapons; only the Ever Victorious Army was consistently armed with muzzle-loading rifle and bayonet and trained in their use.

China: Yes.
History China is massive battle, super manpowers, batlle royale and wars...

Manchu bows are known to use heavy arrows at close range for penetration

very nice war scene best one i see for a long time
Kurosawa is a great director, but the efficiency of firearms (taken over by the Japanese from the the Portuguese) is displayed in a let's say optimistic way, regarding fire frequency, range and accuracy. Two shots in a minute were the maximum, the impact of musket shot . The scatter of the shots was high and the probability of hitting a single enemy rapidly fell on longer distance than about 50 m, and the impact of a shot was potentially deadly only up to 200 m, at least against armoured men.
黑泽明是日本的,这是中国片
You're thinking of early matchlock muskets, these are more modern fusils.
Of course, still VERY outdated compared to what other nations had at the time, like the Europeans and japanese, but still really useful for the then war situation.
Besides, two shots a minute is terrible, there are accounts of well trained soldiers during the Napoleonic era getting three and even four shots a minute, combined with revolving fire, it was devastating.
For two shots a minute you'd be dealing with a rifled musket for marksmen, who DO prioritize good accuracy and range over speed.
why Kurosawa? He has nothing to do with this movie.
this is a China film not Japan
huh?
The general must’ve hated those riflemen. He left them unguarded lol.
Americans think their country is the most important
Their not even 300 years old yet
Wrong. China is only hostile to the west now because of current western hostilities and provocations. China is trying to prevent repeating another century of humiliation.
What evidence do have China is hostile to the west.

Fight for life, fight for brothers. Until the second world war, most people in China had no sense of state, so the death rate of generals was very high, because they had to rush ahead. Soldiers would not fight for their country, but they would definitely fight for their brothers.
