+Vickers Tactical The plate to "limit" the gun to semi (2:40) only exists because in switzerland people take ther military guns home once they've finished the military service and must not use full auto outside of military training context (you can't buy any full auto rifle as a civilian, that's why civilian versions of sig 550s are in semi auto only). +Anusideral A Swiss guy explained to me that this plate was designed to prevent "full auto accidents" at the range. You're supposed to keep it that way at all time unless you're in a place that allow for full auto.
***** Well I'm simplifying a bit. According to the swiss law you can't even "use" a full auto weapon. That's why there are no places that allow full auto. Please note that it only concerns ordonnance weapons given to swiss citizens doing the military service., as any other full auto weapons "effectively" (compared to the plate thing) turned into semi auto weapons are also illegal to, buy, own and use. Also, this is the current state of the law, it might have been different some years ago but I wasn't living here back then and I don't really have the time to dig into the obsolete laws records, sorry. Edit: further reading the law, seems that the Cantons (swiss "states") can deliver exceptional authorizations for full auto weapons under very specific conditions. Key word here : "exceptional". :D

Nicholas Shaver I see now it all makes sense. You live in California one of the most fucking shity states in the country. You must be jealous of use because you can't be use and have all the fun we can living in a free state
I didn't know about that "design flaw", nice to know ;) Beeing Swiss I used to be issued a Sig 550 , a very reliable and easy to use rifle, but a bit heavy on the downside (Due to my rank I'm nowadays issued with a Sig P220 Pistol) I had to laugh a bit when Larry explained how to use the safety-switch (thumb/index-finger), because that's exactly what I was trained to do ! XD Regarding the small plate that can be used to limmit the fire-selector to semi-auto only: This has to do with practices within a shooting-range in Switzerland. When entering, every Rifle has to be pre-set to fire semi-auto only, to prevent accidental full-auto fire. So by flipping-down the little plate, you'll conveniantely limmit the rifle's select-fire capability. Sorry for the long text ;) I'm curious what Larry thinks of the standard variant (550)...
+Wacky WEASEL I think that comment is directed at americans who buy guns like that with zero training in how to use them. I cannot tell you how many people I know buy Colt 6920 (civilian M-4) and ask me to teach them to use it.
+Wacky WEASEL I kinda like the switch that limits the fire selector to semi only. I've noticed, especially with H&K guns, like the MP5 or the UMP45, the selector takes quite a bit more force to get it to switch than a AR/M4/M16 type selector, and I've found myself trying to go from safe to semi, or even safe/semi to burst, and find I had to push the selector so hard that once it does move, I've skipped over both semi and burst and went straight to auto, lol. A little inconvenient on the range, but I bet that would be a little more than inconvenient when your getting shot at or kicking down doors. Still though, that MP5 is a dream to shoot otherwise.
+Joe Blow I like M16/M4 style selector better for that reason 90 degree angles for selector so you will never accidentally overshoot your fire settings. Automatic is a really niche setting to begin with, so if I used the 550 series I probably would just leave the rifle on semi auto only anyways.
I had a 550 for my military service here in Switzerland. Never experienced any issues with the tritium's ironsights. We shot it at night but never been blinded. Other than that greet review. Would love to see you reviewed the 553.
Hellow together! The auto block feater is for sport shooting here back in switzerland. In our 300m shooting range you aren't allouwd to shoot 3 burst and full auto. That is only for military use. Sorry for my bad english :/ Hellow from a swiss fan^^
+Yannik Mroos I think its time to let the past be past. We've learned our lesson from what happened back then when Hitler was in Charge. We are ashamed of what happened... The time for jokes about Nazis is over
good point on the weight. I had the 550 when I was in the Swiss Armed Forces and it was a pain in the ass to carry it around and same goes for CQB. Still loved every moment with it.
@Leo Peridot jeez, why are you so hostile? I understand you might be a bit Russophobic with all that craze going on, but there's no need to let all that out on this completely random person. WTF?! And it's "do svidaniya" not "das vandanya", it means "until we meet again".
The switch for semi-auto to selective comes from the Swiss armed forces. While we have our guns on selective fire on CQB-shooting ranges, we have to switch to semi-automatic on 300m ranges. This is the only use for that switch.. It's not for rendering full auto unusable longterm, but just for one single task "300m shooting".
Gurfi28 Completely correct. As a soldier, you have to bring your rifle to a civilian shooting range at least once a year. This way, they immediately know that the gun can only be in semi.
Nice vid as usual! The plate for the selector (to make it semi only) is a thing used by the military. When we do our annual target practice, you have to set it to the semi only setting before entering the range. They check (little white dot appears) at the entrance. This way they can be sure none of the guns fire more than semi in the range. Of course you can just open the gun and switch it, but there are RSOs all around who watch the shooters.
the blocking of the full-auto mode is a Swiss military thing. When on guard duty or precision firing, it's regulation to have the "white dot" visible. The idea is: it's kinda hard to shoot somebody with full auto while on guard duty. - we're a peacetime armed force.
For sure the 553 with it's recoil spring captured around the piston is really easier to disassemble and more reliable. What surprised me the first time I disassembled mine, is that with it's particularly design when you separate the upper from the lower you can still operate the charging handle and the bolt will return on battery like if the weapon was still assembled. Kind of unusual to not have the recoil spring located behind the bolt. I also prefer the 553 charging handle design vs the 552 one because with it's polymer part it's a bit more comfortable while shorter. On mine I have the Rotex flash hider option which looks cooler than the standard one. Greetings from France guys, and thanks Larry for all those great videos.
Answer to your q about the selector to single shot: here in Switzerland you are not allowed to enter a shooting range for your mandatory yearly practice with an automatic gun. Voilá!

click bait I mean it technically is accurate by calling it a “commando” cause it is a commando style rifle, they just don’t specify the manufacturer in siege.
Great review! I had the opportunity to teach with this and an SG 551 while working at Sigarms Academy and loved a lot about both. However, learned something new from this video.
You can get the 553 in the U.S. now as a pistol, which is improved over the 552 in many ways. The 553 is genuine SAN 100% Swiss made, so it's expensive, but given what the pre-ban Sig's go for it's actually 1/3 or less for a new 553. You can SBR it but then you have to replace enough parts with American ones for 922 compliance. I own a couple of Sig 556's and agree, they don't compare in workmanship, fit, finish, accuracy, etc., when you compare it to the 553. The 553 is actually capable of 2MOA accuracy with the right shooter, not me, but that's pretty good for 9" barrel!
I was fortunate enough to be able to use this rifle on several contracts, always found it to be very accurate and reliable, never had any problem with the return spring but then I never knew a problem existed. The only problem / weak point we found with the rifles were the magazines, namely that being plastic the feed lips / top of the mag was very prone to damage and the cause of most stoppages.
At are range we rent that gun 552 commando. One problem we ran in to the gas is not one piece. It is 2 tubes over time they come apart. the front part over the gas block is not held in place from moving forward. Only the end of the tube locks in to the receiver. if the two pieces of the tube brake the front one will almost fly out the front. Also the front on the gas tube is weak. it will want to crack on the inside were the gas regulater locks in.
We ran these with teams in Iraq for several years and they were quite handy. Only real gripe was with the base of the gas pistons where they mated with the bolt carrier. We got a batch where the pistons had not been heat treated correctly and over time they would deform gradually forming a ramp that eventually caused the piston to ride up over the back of the bolt carrier and split the top of the carrier. Absolutely no service from the SIG company either, which was disappointing. Good shooting gun with a forward grip and EOTech sight.
Hi Vickers! Guy living in switzerland here. That little plate that pivots around to disable the 3-shot butst and full auto mode is there for the following reason: After serving your military time and you've proven competent enough to handle your gun, you're allowed to take your gun home without actually having to have a license to carry. In this case, they only allow you to have access to the semi-auto mode on your gun. To ensure this, that little plate gets fixed mechanically so you can't turn it back anymore, thus permanently disabeling full auto and burst mode. With the right tools you can still enable those modes, but that's illegal.
+Chretze If you were in the military and proved you could handle it why would they not trust you with auto or burst? And since it can easily be flipped back what is the point if someone was to commit a crime with his rifle he could easily move the plate back prior to said criminal act.
Julie Smith Don't ask me, it's the law here. Civilians just aren't allowed to have full auto or burst mode. I you modify your rifle to be fully functional again you risk a jail sentence if you get caught. It's not that simple to do either, you need some gunsmithing skills and tools to do it. But yeah I get your point.
ive been serving as a squad leader in the swiss infantry for 3 years now and we still didnt get this rifle... we still have to go into cqb with a rifle that is 3.3 feet long....
Yeah they're awesome, I'm looking into getting one but they're damn expensive. It's hard to justify spending that much money on a rifle when I could get something that takes STANAG magazines and get 2-3x the capacity, and has a much wider aftermarket. For $4200 (their current price) you could even get a dressed-up Modern Varmint rifle from Alberta Tactical. Do you have the non-restricted or restricted version?
How you thought about doing an overview of the Steyr Scout rifle? I feel that it would provide you with an opportunity to discuss and dissect Jeff Cooper's scout rifle concept and to give your thoughts on how relevant it actually is in modern times and its potential uses in the military/SF community.
+Eyan Stevenson shoot one mag one the g36c and you won't hit one shot;)(joke mode off). Isn't the barrel of the g36c longer? So a comparison to the 550 would be better
Just to explain what the fun switch "White dot" block is for. It is not designed to limit the gun to semi-auto permanently (obviously). In Switzerland you are only allowed to enter civilian shooting ranges with "White dot" activated as you are only allowed semi-auto shooting. Thanks for the vid!
Hey LAV! So I've been looking for a particular video and I can't seem to find one that's been made and the TacTV guys are perfect for the job! Everyone post videos on shooting and providing heavy suppression, but what about a video about taking heavy suppression??? You could show what it's like to be shot at with different guns, suppressed and in suppressed at different ranges and different rates of fire.
If I could get my hands on one of these devils I'd be set for life. One of my most favorite 5.56 platforms, and in my own personal opinion, one of the most dependable.
As the former special weapons coordinator for SIG SAUER and a specialist is the 55X series rifle to call a upgraded design a fatal flaw is an incorrect statement. Once they went to a polymer guide rod the problem was solved. The 553 was a cost motivated design change for the 552.
Well I think the semi-only blocking plate is used for semi switch under stress. That plate prevents you from over-switched to 3r-burst or even worst, full-auto. It s not like ARs which give users 90-degree selecting switch but this one it's only about 35 degrees between the modes.
its for when you get your gun after youve been in the army (yeah you get to keep them in switzerland) they weld that thing in there or something so you only have access to semi
Just as a quick note. The plate that blocks the gun to semi only is because of a rule that at the 300m ranges, in Switzerland, we cannot have the gun on 3-shot burst nor full auto. The white dot that signifies that it is blocked to semi-only is just something that "needs to be visible" when we enter the 300m ranges. IDK, it's a stupid rule, but if you ever serve in the Swiss army, you'll realize that there are a LOT of supid rules lol.
Vickers tactical. Mate this gun made so many FPS gun games fun. I’d love to visit USA and give it a go for real in a rifle range. In MW19 it has low recoil and the 1st choice of go to guns for pretty much everyone.
The rear tritium night sights are for close range targets which you'd shoot without really aiming, e.g. in CQB. You make sure that the front dot and the rear dots are approximately in line and do a double tap. At least that's what we trained in the Armed Forces before we had rifles with reflex optics. If you want to shoot longer ranges with the night sight, you rotate to the "4" rear diopter sight and you're good to go.
isn't the semi-only switch primarily used for locking the gun in semi mode after one has completed his service in the swiss army? I know my dad has got the predecessor of the SG550 and they weld a piece of metal in there so you're not able to switch to auto
The switch between semi-automatic and full-auto is for the civilian use in switzerland. every swiss man needs to serve in the armed forces and get's they're gun to home, so they could fight they're way to the next pick up point. but the "veterans" or reservist, or however you want to call them, need to practice shooting every year in a civilian shooting range, and as a civilian in switzerland your not allowed to have a fulll-auto gun. the switch is built like that, so that the soldiers get in a war scenario, even if switzerland is invaded, to they're meeting point where they are going to receive the rest of they're equipment. Also important to know: only special forces operators get the SIG 552 or SIG 553 from the armed forces, common soldiers get the SIG 550. The sof of the miliairy police of the swiss armed forces have a bigger arsenal and are also using guns like the mp 5 and so, but they need to leave them at the barracks, just like the maching guns and the Sniper rifles. Great video and greetings from switzerland (please excuse my bad english, i am not speaking it alot)

Thanks for the Great Video MSG Vickers. I am a sig 556 fan having two and a sig 716.
One of my favorite guns! In Canada, we can get the semi-auto versions of these and the full size ones. That's the semi-auto version in my pic
Would love to see the 553 video to hear your take on it.
The advise for the rear sights is super! Like!
How you thought about doing an overview of the Steyr Scout rifle?
I feel that it would provide you with an opportunity to discuss and dissect Jeff Cooper's scout rifle concept and to give your thoughts on how relevant it actually is in modern times and its potential uses in the military/SF community.
I'd love to see the SIG 552/3 vs HK G36C
+Eyan Stevenson shoot one mag one the g36c and you won't hit one shot;)(joke mode off). Isn't the barrel of the g36c longer? So a comparison to the 550 would be better
This weapon sounds wicked cool!
getting to see the action in slow mo was awesome. i reload and i have always wanted to see where this is denting the brass.
1000 thank yous
Just to explain what the fun switch "White dot" block is for. It is not designed to limit the gun to semi-auto permanently (obviously). In Switzerland you are only allowed to enter civilian shooting ranges with "White dot" activated as you are only allowed semi-auto shooting. Thanks for the vid!
another good video. LV is looking great! I really like the video "why I'm fat" and all the hard work you do.
These are available at any walmart, right?
Yeah, select fire weapons are available there for around $99.99 :)
That's the "Grau" from Call of Duty Modern Warfare :) awesome gun
Larry, you need to walk us through the XM8 next.
Selector switch was like this so when service members went home with their rifles they had to be in semi mode to be legal. Check it out.
the slowmotion Effect was really cool
Unsuppressed*
Why is my RUclips recommended teasing me with my (almost) dream gun - I want a 553 - five years after the video comes out
6:00 - you gotta get own it - Brooklyn accent
If I could get my hands on one of these devils I'd be set for life. One of my most favorite 5.56 platforms, and in my own personal opinion, one of the most dependable.
More! Great stuff!
One of the sleekest and sexiest rifles ever built.
Larry good find thanks for the video..
nicw Video greetings from switzerland
Have you seen or heard about ZMTs new UKM-2000P? Totally different class but would still love to see you evaluate that thing.
As the former special weapons coordinator for SIG SAUER and a specialist is the 55X series rifle to call a upgraded design a fatal flaw is an incorrect statement. Once they went to a polymer guide rod the problem was solved. The 553 was a cost motivated design change for the 552.
Add the arch angel barrel for longer range
You get hit by a tire iron when you were a kid?
It's cute. Like those MPX and MP7.
That gun makes me remind of games like Counter Strike and 007 Nightfire and Everything Or Nothing
could you cover the 556 next please, and maybe even do a comparison between the 556, the 416 and the m16a3?
Well I think the semi-only blocking plate is used for semi switch under stress. That plate prevents you from over-switched to 3r-burst or even worst, full-auto. It s not like ARs which give users 90-degree selecting switch but this one it's only about 35 degrees between the modes.
its for when you get your gun after youve been in the army (yeah you get to keep them in switzerland) they weld that thing in there or something so you only have access to semi
Well done,great rewiev
Great video! Love the sg 55x rifles!!!
Damn sweet little thing cheers
The SG550 and it's derivatives are just such cool rifles. I can't understand why more countries don't use them. Namely the SG550.
I think swiss dont wana sell them to others?
isn't the semi-only switch primarily used for locking the gun in semi mode after one has completed his service in the swiss army? I know my dad has got the predecessor of the SG550 and they weld a piece of metal in there so you're not able to switch to auto
cool, the sound of the gun is nice too
The switch between semi-automatic and full-auto is for the civilian use in switzerland. every swiss man needs to serve in the armed forces and get's they're gun to home, so they could fight they're way to the next pick up point. but the "veterans" or reservist, or however you want to call them, need to practice shooting every year in a civilian shooting range, and as a civilian in switzerland your not allowed to have a fulll-auto gun. the switch is built like that, so that the soldiers get in a war scenario, even if switzerland is invaded, to they're meeting point where they are going to receive the rest of they're equipment.
Perfect weapon for close quarters
Best views while a gun is firing, amazing
Perfect weapon
Great video from Vickers Tactics as usual :), I really hope to see the SIG 556 variant, it's one of my favorite rifles.
Unfortunately I can't have access to Vickers Tactics Facebook page :'( , this appears on FB when I click on the link in the description "The link you followed may have expired, or the Facebook Page may only be visible to an audience you're not in"
I thought he was going to say that the fatal flaw was the SIG magazine, and was going to flip.
IQ main?
Well rifle.. I use this back in service.. Very reliable especially for underwater warfare..
SIG 552. I'm lovin' it!👍
love the videos thanks for them
