@@LewisRenovation I’ve been welding gym equipment for about 10 months now. Been contemplating doing our own fence (we’re in the hill country) but have been overwhelmed by the task!
The reason it is called 2-3/8 or 2-7/8 is because it is upset tubing and not pipe and it certainly isn’t drill stem. Drill stem is much larger in diameter and heavier. It is what is used to attach the bit to and drill the wells. This stuff you are building your fence out of is upset tubing which is used to get the oil out of the well once it is drilled. It would twist up like a pretzel if they tried to use it as drill stem. I know lots of people call it drill stem but it ain’t.
Nice job… enjoyed watching all of the hard work. ..boilermaker/welder here from the 70’s…😵💫 A lot has happened since 2021… I was looking for buckets of water or a hose.. but didn’t see any. Farmers here in South Australia are always setting the countryside alight with grinders and welders..😊
That's one stout looking fence. I like that you used pipe for the intermediary connection rather than the more commonly used and cheaper sucker rods. We've build fences with sucker rods but they are so dang hard to get a good weld sometimes the welds break and leave portions of the fence dangling.
I've heard of sucker rods being hard to weld. My neighbor just had a fence built with sucker rods. Hopefully it works out for him Thanks for the nice comment!
Fantastic video, and great looking fence. Watched bc I have the intention of doing something similar, although there isnt drill stem pipe readily available within several hundred miles. I might use new or junkyard pipe, on a smaller scale than yours I think. New sub, hope to see more cool projects from your channel.
Nice fence but that shits really gone up in price? On the west coast it’s anywhere from 98 to 120 a joint and 4 years ago I bought it for 40 per joint.
@@LewisRenovation that price sounds ok, just quoted a job 900’ of two rail, 85 joint, holes, concrete and no climb fencing, I cut my labor and told them 19,000 it would have been my first job in oregon but they said no? Was hoping to get one done in this area, anyway thanks for the reply
Hello I was wondering if you still had them guys contact I’m trying to fence my 6 acres and was wondering if they still do that and see what they would charge me. Thank you.
Pipe around here right now is $90 per joint. If oil prices ever really drop, it will go down to $45. The further you are from active drilling the more it will cost. 6 hours west of here they are drilling Iike crazy so it's pretty cheap. Pipe saddles I got from a welding supply store but Amazon has the same ones.
@@LewisRenovation I weld one inch sucker, i like to punch a hole in the up right stick the sucker rod in the hole then weld around it. I built all my cattle pens using that method and the welds have held up over 25 years.
I wish I could get 10 dollars a post here! Also use a string line but the rock is so bad here in some places it takes an auger and concrete to set steel posts. Lucky for you the pipe you used is thick wall and unlikely to bend when being hit. Never saw pipe saddles cut with a plasma cutter before. I hate cleaning metal so if I was ever able to find pipe like that I would also have performed electrolysis first to make cleaning easier. I enjoy your videos, too bad you have to work alone!
I know what you mean by rocks. My parents place 20 miles west we had to rent an air powered jack hammer just to get t posts in. Thanks for commenting. Take care!
I am just curious, not being critical. Why are you cutting off the coupler for the top rail? I was concerned the threads wouldn't allow me to couple the pipes together, but with a little wire brushing and a bit of silicon spray on the threads, I have been able to thread them up pretty well
@@LewisRenovation I cannot fault you for that. I wish I had enough confidence in my welding to do as you did. But I feel the couplers will look alot smoother than my welds hanging out there in the open😁
Great video! Do you know the approximate weight of used 2 7/8 drill pipe per foot? I was looking to build a fence and some other stuff. I don’t want to overload my trailer..
We are building a house in north Texas (about 20 min. north of greenville) … about to have to build a pipe fence around my 3 acres here soon…. where did you get all the pipe? and roughly what was the cost per foot? …. your fence looks awesome!
I got the pipe off Facebook. Just search for drill stem. Material cost was about $6/ft. Prices have doubled since then. I'm guessing for my fence labor would cost at least $2k. Good luck and thanks for commenting!
Doesn’t your pipe still have threads and couplers? We have installed miles of pipe. We don’t cut and weld butt joints we just spin it together and continue on. Each to their own I guess.
I found the guy because he was working on a fence 2 miles up the road. Try searching on FB marketplace or Craigslist for fence or skid steer services. The attachment is generally called a hydraulic fence driver. Good luck!
6011 is easier to build pipe fence WITH ! 7018 makes strong welds but UNless you're building Cow pens the Xtra strength isn't necessary ! Nice fence by the way !
On your joints it's best to side a foot of 2 3/8ths inside do like there you put slices. Those saddles or copes would have been much easier with a chop saw. Set saw at 32 degrees. Your mind makes you think it has to be cut half circle but it's not it's a flat cut. A grinder would have been easier with a cut off wheel to cut on post that plasma cutter. When you cut at 32 degrees it already beveled for weld. Your post was a little short to just drive but should be fine. I just had to stand one back up that had drove 8 foot post and was trying to fall over in only 5 years. When I drive I make a t post and drive Evey 5th one. Just saddle a 2 foot peace of scrape and weld then drive tell t is a few inches under ground just dig out trench with shovel. I have fences I put in 30 years ago that are still perfect
@@LewisRenovation theres no way a cut wheel or chop saw compares to the way this man cope that pipe . i been a welder a long time i would run a man off my job if he cut drill stem that way
what i like about setting without concrete is that in 5 years you can come back and redo the whole fence again. gives me something to do. that’s the biggest scam of lazy ppl trying to get into fencing without doing things right.
