  • Today, we're taking a look at the film that, quite possibly, saved the life of the feature animation department at the Disney Studios. It's time to look at the battle between the World's Greatest Criminal Mind and the Sherlock Holmes of the Mouse World, The Great Mouse Detective!

I am surprised you didn't mention how Vincent Price went on the record that Ratigan was one of his favorite roles. You can tell he had so much fun playing that role. He's charm, love of being evil, and intelligence is why he's my fav Disney villain and this movie is one of my fav Disney Movies too.

    Jerry here,
This movie makes me smile. I don't think I'm fully able to explain why, but it puts a smile on my face. It's not the most important film that Disney ever made but I come back to it as comfort food. It's kind of wonderful.

Personally I’ve always considered Basil to be the start of (and one of) the Disney Renascence movies! It’s exquisitely animated, it’s mix of 2D and CGI animation is phenomenal, it’s casting, perfect, music, glorious and story easy to follow for children, yet deep enough for older audiences! It’s a crime this is a ‘forgotten’ film more often than not when as you’ve stated in your fine video, should be held on a pedestal alongside Snow White, Beauty and the Beast and Wreck It Ralph as one of Disney’s finest works!!!

See, I told you things would be better. I consider it one of my favorite films and an underrated gem. Basil and Ratigan are definitely the highlight. To me, I think the TRUE Renaissance era really started here and ended with “The Lion King”, as I consider the whole line of films from those points as favorites. Speaking of which, I’m definitely looking forward to the next film because, maybe I’m speaking a little biased, that one’s #5 on my list of favorite films.

The Great Mouse Detective is my favourite Disney movie; no matter how many times I watch it, it keeps it's charm and continues to entertain me. And it's not even about nostalgic value: though the commersial of the movie always interested me as a kid, I was maybe eighteen when I finally managed to actually watch this for the first time.

Honestly in my opinion. This is where the Disney Renaissance really started. The Great Mouse Detective really was kind of "A New Hope" for the Disney legacy, proving that it could still be successful. It's absolutely CRIMINAL, that this film or its characters do not get more support and love from modern Disney. Basil isn't forgotten by any means. But sadly like many films from our youth. He along with them are brushed aside for the new stuff. If ever there was a Disney character that could actually have Sequels and be deserving. it's Basil of Baker Street. He's already got a handful of books they could pull plot ideas from, not to mention the official Disney Comic books which im a little surprised you didn't mention here. Still, Great video my dude. I'm glad you have an appreciation for this movie like i do. Maybe not as much as i do haha but all the same, any good support for our famous mouse detective is good to see.
Now if only we can get Nomura to put The Great Mouse Detective in KINGDOM HEARTS... COME ON SQUARE!!!

The Great Mouse Detective is #9 on my list of favorite animated Disney movies. I watched this movie multiple times in my childhood, and today, there are still multiple parts of the movie that get into my head from time to time. I guess one reason why I like this movie is because of how Basil goes from a selfish mouse to a compassionate mouse. Sure I am troubled by how he treats Olivia in the beginning, but by the end he shows so much compassion for Olivia that I end up loving him. However, Olivia is still my favorite character for this whole movie. She stays likable for the entire story, which makes it easier to sympathize when she loses her father. Now, my very favorite sequence for this movie is the dock bar sequence, which feels so much like a western cowboy movie. But I cannot deny that I like the use of British talk as well. And because I love this movie so much, I will gladly acknowledge it as the movie that gave the new Disney animators their start in fame. (Even if I would still prefer An American Tail over The Great Mouse Detective).

  • @92JazzQueen
    @92JazzQueen 6 лет назад +7

In my opinion it's both underrated as a Sherlock Holmes and Disney movie, which is a shame because it's really a gem that I loved as a kid and can appreciate as an adult. One thing I know that it was made in the 80's how much they could get away with edgy material. I mean smoking in Disney movies is now banned and this movie has a lot of it. Not to mention all the alcohol, violence, and even sexuality they got in that bar scene.
One thing I like about Ratigan is that he's like the Penguin he puts on a mask of civility, but its to hide his brutal nature. Originally in the books, Ratigan was an oversized mouse who could be mistaken for a rat, but the movie changed that along with the fact he was lean. Overall, Ratigan is a character you just love to hate and it's delicious.

Funny, I am American born and raised, and I always knew this movie as "Basil of Baker Street" as a kid, and not "The Great Mouse Detective." And nobody even had to tell me.
I think this was because the characters just refer to Basil by such aforementioned title throughout the film. So the movie knew what it was, even if the title was changed.

I like how you've superposed the film's music with the ongoing vagaries the working teams went through. (Far from being an isolated case, but still!) The leading theme in particular is so rousing, each time.
Also, critics most often laud Vincent Price in first, for his (exquisite!) impersonation of Ratigan, but if I were to choose, I've been even more enjoying Ingham's lending of his voice to Basil. Would you happen to know in what consisted the part of his casting performance, which you've referred to, that simply made it to the movie? (And I'm asking while not having browsed though the entirety of the comments below.) Even if not, I'm glad to have learned that little anecdote with your video. Doesn't surprise me one bit!

I think pride is why Ratigan uses intellect to fight Basil. It’s clear that he can best Basil in a physical fight, so it’s clear that he could just throw him off a cliff, but that’s not what he wants. He wants to be a civilized mouse and fight like one, using word and wit as his only weapons.
If he resorts to brute force, he’s admitting to Basil and Mousedom that they’re right, he’s nothing but a common sewer rat.

I literally had every movie up to Fantasia 2000, except Saludos Amigos, on VHS, and I swear I watched most of the package films way more than this one. But I'm thinking it's about time I revisit our friend Basil of Baker Street, as I've seen the movie's gained sort of a cult following in recent years. Anyways, loved the review as always! So much could go wrong but to actually see Studio interferance that helped a movie and not cripple the company is rare, atleast what we get to hear about. This movie is great, It is sad to hear people who have not seen it but among my friends and family this is among thier favorites. I love the music, the style. Looking at it and thinking about the time it was made, you could say this went back looking as similar to Lady and the Tramp as possible giving it that high quallity look. A perfect movie to watch during a rainy or dark day. I remember thinking Olivia was a boy becuse the Scotish get up made me think she was wearing a kilt XD And I who dislike how they color her clothes pink on the covers just to try make it clear to people. I do like the Black Cauldron after watching it a few times in the past, but it is no where near as good as the two books it is based on, mainly for charecters and story and I feel like even though it was a good effort by the Disney Studio, they kind missed the mark a little bit and I think it is also too dark for a Disney movie. I do wish we could see it in its original uncut form cause it probbaly would be better that way.

As a Madonna fan...i am glad they decided against getting her to do a song number for the film, or else she'd be begging for a voice credit in the film given her reputation to train wreck herself into a film.
She hasn't got a lot of acting chops that gurl 😂😅

As an animator, I had a big problem with this film when it came out (I was about 15). The animation isn't BAD, it's just... simple? a little shoddy? a little cheaply drawn? Not terrible, but far below the draftsmanship and animation quality one would expect from Disney. I really couldn't stomach watching it on the big screen. It holds up better today since Disney has made far worse films since then.
