I do and I’m Canadian! I’ve been lucky enough to see him twice in Canada and man did those shows last long after the stage lights faded. Thanks for this video and thanks to Ry and all of the spectacular musicians that have played with you and made your songs even greater!
Mr. Ry Cooder has transcended the borders of the country that saw him born and develop ... because he has been able to reach thanks to his music to almost every corner of this beautiful planet ... I was a teenager when I discovered his album "Crossroads "and I was fascinated by the sound of his guitar ... From those times I have collected all his albums ... If I had or could choose a sponsor to be a musician ... I would not doubt ... that adoptive father would undoubtedly be Mr. Ry Cooder ... And about to finish this year 2018 ... I celebrate his new album with his son ... I wish I could see him and hear him live in these lands ... Thanks to Don Ry Cooder and his son for making life more bearable with his music ... Happy Holidays for everyone!
A New Series of U.S. Postage Stamps (1st Class): National Treasures - Ry Cooder, Bob Dylan, Lucinda Williams, Guy Clark, John Prine, Townes Van Zandt, Robert Hunter.
Mr. Ry Cooder is one of the great masters of American music. I'll go out on a limb: People will be listening to his work in 500 years and appreciating its beauty and power.
I'm taking Ry's advice from last night and not watching the news. Just going to watch Ry Cooder on RUclips today. This is a great place to start on my Ry Cooder journey through RUclips
The master, the man of great wisdom. Because of the very great and blessed Ry Cooder the world is better place to live, this man has the God-given gifts to cure allpeople ills and pains, I bet he could make the blind see and the crippled walk by people just listing to his music and talks about injustices and the great greed of some others which only causes great troubles to the less well off. What more in this great big world do we needed, only more of this master player, singer, and educator
One of the superb guitarists of all time in my opinion. Ry sheer musical experience and knowledge far surpases most musicians out there. Ketih Richards once offered Ry a job playing guitar, he turned them down but had done some studio work on albums like Beggars Banquet. It's great to see Ry is still recording and making great records.
Cool to hear these reworked old gospel tunes. Maybe the world needs to hear a better message. Ry looks like he still has the juice. Good to see. Keep em coming....
Saw Ry at the Great American Music Hall in SF around 2009, maybe 10. I had just listened to the sound track of Paris, Texas. My friend Wayne said 'we're going'. So I got to see the guy who did the slide on Sister Morphine. A new door opened that night. I've looked at music and playing it differently ever since. There is no one like him.
Yes Ry when those old gospel songs, sounds and tunes got into you as a young person back in our timeframe it does stick with you. Thank you for keeping that old but great stuff alive with your twist as only you can do. I've been a fan since back when you did the music for Southern Comfort. Ha ha, kind of dating myself. keep doing you thing Brother and God Bless you. I'll be listening.
Always loved his song choices - to say nothing of his playing. I remember how he just slayed the song "Billy the Kid" live in concert at UVM in the early 1970's. Just him and his mandolin - magnificent !!
On the eight day, God created Ry Cooder..... and it was beyond good. But I really gotta call out that Bass player. I don't know his name, but wow.... how perfect can you be.
Music for the people back long ago and even more relevant today. Your music has been an inspiration to me since 1976 and I will finally get the opportunity to witness it for the first time in Boston in June. Thank you for being the historian that you have always been and keeping the people's music alive. See you in Boston!
Into the Purple Valley and some of Cooder's 'early' releases are reprised, but with new recording techniques and a lifetime of vocalizations are in here...Prodigal Son has been long in coming! Fine work, but as always, way out of the mainstream and reserved for those whose appreciation of Ry's eclectic tastes are large. Thank you Ry! Gospelicious! So nice to hear Ry after a decade - very special sounds happening here!
ry singing is better than ever and the live versions are sounding better than the cd ,lets hope for more from the legendry cooder stable, ps for gods sake dont go to cuba again ( they will not let you back in)
Luckily for all of us that he went to cuba david! Whadda ya mean? Without him there'd be no 'Buena Vista Social Club' after all....whuzza matta U boy? FATE sent him for history's sake and ours too!
I loved those political records though. The one about the two brothers was just perfect. Brother is gone is the title amd it's just an emotional punch to the throat. Looking forward to this one!
Ry, I remember you when you were a young kid jamming with my old buddy Taj Mahal. You partied with me, Leslie West, Jimi, Velvert Turner, Arthur Lee and Cynthia "Plaster Caster" Albritton in my apartment above the Whiskey in 1968. Good daze back then.
If Ry was a Welsh man like like me he would be on a par with Tom Jones, Richard Burton, Lloyd George, and Dylan Thomas you should treasure this man thnx Ry
Why would someone go out of their way to dislike this video? Don’t people recognise and differentiate good quality music in today’s glutton of garbage being released out there? Maybe it just goes over their heads but you don’t need to actually DISLIKE it!
I started to play guitar in my ‘20s. Of course I came across Ry Cooder and was hooked. So I picked up drums instead! Thank goodness he has a prolific output that sons decades. Lucky us!
SURE(!) hope that the live studio version of Prodigal Son is on the record. Raw and pure. In the opening of this video, there's a clip of what I suspect (fear?) will be the album version. The little snippet just seems to lack the edge and energy... too polished. If it is the version, I do hope I'm wrong. Ry'll get it right.
@3:00 is this the famous green stereo splitter and if so, is there a schematic available? ...and I thimk it's so cool how you shot AND rec'd this album... ...in fact, it's bl***dy amazing (!)
Jefferson Martin: Vintage tube gear was designed for 115 volts, but most homes and venues are actually 120. The Variac allows the amp to perform better and can actually change the tone.
It's SOOooo much more than a Variac. Dig up a Fretboard Journal '2018 Electric Guitar Annual' and head to the article 'Everything is Weird'. Every fan should have a copy. There is an entire page devoted to "The Green Man". Look at about 2:57 and you'll see some 1/4" phono plugs going onto it which a normal Variac lacks. That's because this thing drives more than amp circuitry and was built for Ry by an electrical wizard named Danny McKinney. It's doing some buffering and allowing the actual guitar signal to be split to as many as 4 different amps.
What is that sitting on the wooden chair at the 3:00 min mark? It looks like a variac of some type but the guitar is plugged into it with two amp cables coming out. I know you can use one to lower in the voltage for a tube amp to get a sweeter sound but what's going on with this?

Been a big Ry fan for a long time. I think he's a true treasure! Just found this in my research about the 'variac' sitting on his chair. I would love to know how this thing is wired. www.rycooder.nl/pages/ry_cooder_Instruments_gear_amps_effects.htm
That's cool - Ry also has a Vox Octave Guitar modified to work in much the same way, with double courses on the top 3 strings and single courses on the bottom. Tunes it to some kind of Open A tuning.
This is awesome. Can anyone in Ry's team tell me what tuning he's using for prodigal son in the live version? It sounds like open D with capo 4... But sounds off when I try! 😅
A lot of electric guitars don't do so well with a squeeze-grip capo... It presses too hard, and makes everything off. They are designed more for an Acoustic. For an electric you often need to have something that you can adjust the tightness. That's what I've found anyway.
You took that totally wrong, his son said Dad they want to here you PLAY GUITAR.I love Ry and have all his albums. NO RUDE intent, just made me think of Frank Zappa's quote! Peace
Get the algorithm they use for scrambling info, change the if-then statements to SHOW each person THEIR relevant info..... I suspect this is done in the module used for people like Melania Trump and stuff..... Once again. You know. What you need to know!!!! Not what confuses you. Not what makes you nuts.
The thing about all the millions of authentic musicians in this world, like Ry Cooder, The Beatles,The Stones Neil Young the list is endless and we all know who they are, now listen up if they had never made a feckin penny they would still be playing and writing music in their mums bedrooms...I just hate the manufactured money-making suited bollox who disrespect and cheat our beautiful children...old fart here hahaha
I can listen to his music for hours and hours and never get tired of it.
Ry Cooder should be considered a national treasure...
I already do...and I'm A Kiwi, not even American..*laughs*
International treasure.
I do and I’m Canadian! I’ve been lucky enough to see him twice in Canada and man did those shows last long after the stage lights faded. Thanks for this video and thanks to Ry and all of the spectacular musicians that have played with you and made your songs even greater!
Love this man’s feel of the music. He gets it.
How looky we are to live in the same time of Ry Cooder's family world...He is the real and genuin Americana music.
Exactly why I love Ry Cooder's music
Mr. Ry Cooder has transcended the borders of the country that saw him born and develop ... because he has been able to reach thanks to his music to almost every corner of this beautiful planet ... "I will travel around in a crappy bus..." That's the voice of commitment to ones craft. Ry Cooder is a national treasure.

My favorite guitar player of all-time. When he plays... he and that guitar are one entity. It just flows.
Yes the heart, and soul needs to listen + food for the brain……☮️🎶🔛🌎

In our ever more fabricated world this guy is the perfect antidote ! A voice from the deeps !!
His playing is so smooth and clean; what a sound 🎸
❤. You just put a lifetime feeling in just a few seconds. That's what a Ry does.
Brilliant. Many thanks to Garth Hewitt for sending me this link. I love this human being and his music.

Rolling Stone ranked Him 8th best guitarist of the 20th Century. I thought that was 6 places too low...behind only Jimi Hendrix. *smiles*
You don’t often get to listen to Master like Ry explain how he creates his work. Great video
Cool to hear these reworked old gospel tunes. Maybe the world needs to hear a better message. Ry looks like he still has the juice. Good to see. Keep em coming....
Ry's music has spoken to me ever since I discovered him in the 1970's. Chicken Skin Music . . Gabby Pahinui . . and everything he's done since then.
Ry has never been in better voice. This album is my new favorite.
Saw Ry at the Great American Music Hall in SF around 2009, maybe 10. I had just listened to the sound track of Paris, Texas. My friend Wayne said 'we're going'. "Play guitar-that's what they want to hear" AMEN TO THAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Especially like this ;}
Yes!!! His politics have always driven me away from the music.
@@joshuamullicanmusic7482 And, they have always made me love him even more!
Ultra cool Ry Cooder - always so great!!
God, I have just flat out loved Ry Cooder since I was 14 - his music has always been just the best there is. Thank you Ry Cooder!
Love ya Ry

Straight Street is so good! Love how he does it.
Absolute legend
I wish I could get my own talented sons to work on a record with me. That's gotta be ...heaven.

Many thanks to all involved!!! Counting the days until your concert in Toronto at Massey Hall. Great promo video. Sharing! OXO
Better than ever that boy.....

Carre Amsterdam, can't wait!
That makes two of us! I'm sure it will be awesome!
Very cool, and educational too!
I love your music
Ry Cooder is and always has been a creative genius with a skill set rivaling that of daVinci.
hi is like one of those wines that age well ... planet treasure.
Brilliant rockers in this record
I started to play guitar in my ‘20s. Of course I came across Ry Cooder and was hooked. So I picked up drums instead!

What I have learned from being a guitarist myself, is that you have to have the ability to communicate with and thought your guitar.
Can't wait to hear your new album and get a full dose of "Bon ton roulet" at The Olympia in Paris in October
This a 5 star record.....
just bought it on 180gm thick vinyl today

You're absolutely right; the clip featured at 0:45 totally lacks the rawness of the live studio video. I'll stick with the latter.
@3:00 is this the famous green stereo splitter and if so, is there a schematic available?
...and I thimk it's so cool how you shot AND rec'd this album...

Does anyone know what the green can shaped amp switchbox thing is in his rig. You can see it clearly at 3.00
Love the period iinstruments but still havene't figured out what the variable AC power supply is used for.

I wish I knew! It looks to be Ry's pedalboard sitting on that chair and I don't recognize a single "pedal"!
Ok, so at 5:53, you can see an OBNE Black Fountain and a Crucial Audio Echo-Nugget (never seen one of these before!)...I will keep digging.

What’s that acoustic he’s playing, a 9 string? Great sound no matter what he has in his hands!
I believe this is the culprit.
reverb.com/item/1458730-lyon-healy-1201-9-string-acoustic-flat-top-guitar-c-1921
How cool is that! Think its the very guitar?
It's hard to say; either way, Ry Cooder's modified his with a pickup, and he's only got it strung with seven strings here, instead of nine.
to be honest he would get a tune out of a umbrella
That's cool - Ry also has a Vox Octave Guitar modified to work in much the same way, with double courses on the top 3 strings and single courses on the bottom. Tunes it to some kind of Open A tuning.
