- Hey everyone!
I've got something different for you today! I need to move some of my old iron around but the trusty excavator is not around. So it off to the next best thing, the ol payloader. But before I can use it, I've got to get it going again, lets just say things do not always go as planned!
Check out our podcast!

I see that steam engine was made in Grove City Pa witch I live 30 mins from there lol awesome video!!
Yes, it was. It's actually a little bit later then steam and runs on natural gas! I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
The HOUGH with counter weight on the back pulls good.....Thanks my friend.....Your friend Old Navy Flying Shoe in my 80's🇺🇸
Thank you!
hi there neat old piece .great drive way plane . nice old engine , good show john
Thank you!
Hay thats an excellent road grader😂😂😂😂 no more lumps on your road
Got that right!
I have a Hough loader a Lote like yours. we put a C65 chevy rotter on the rear-end yoke welded a caliper to frame & brakes we had. rotter came from Freight Shaker dealer dumpster (does not have to be new) master cylinder 1950's single line any brand will work. it had a working Emergency band brake but would not stop it on a Missouri Hill. It has a 1985 chevy 250 six & 350 auto tranny someone welded= put Crome cylinder rod where kingpins used to be. I have a ton 4x4 dana 70 I might put under front end and then I could steer it loaded and make it front wheel drive with power steering and power front disk brakes. Oh, my loader has been converter to forks not bucket. will pick-up full-size car from the 70's without motor and stack car on car, just hard to get traction even tire chained up. great video very Inspiring.
Thank you! Sounds like you have used yours quite a bit!
This looks like a fun project for sure! Love to see more of the Hough loader too, they are pretty wild machines.
I need to do a tune up on it and move a large pile of dirt. Maybe that can be another video?
Sounds like a plan to me :D
@@Cast_Iron_Curiosities Who was the manufacturer of your tractor?
@@Cast_Iron_Curiosities Never too many videos!
That took some serious Houghin' and puffin' to get up there :) Nice machines, both the loader and the engine!
Thank you!
Nothing like having to fix something in order to fix something.
Dam I love old machines, and tools, but some of the time, it's like banging your head on a wall until it stops hurting.
Then other's, everything works as if it was all brand new fresh from the factory.
Then you wake up from your nap, realize you just finished your late cold supper.
It's 3 AM, you've still got grease covering more of you than what you were working, you've gotta be at work in couple hours, and it's hour half drive away just to get there.
That's usually how things work for me, are did before I decided that I had tore up enough of my body, and just stay home tending cows taking it easy before it's time to go.
Try a solar panel to keep your batteries hot when they sit dormant for extended periods of time, and the low amps won't cook the acid/water outta them.
I found that sometimes, starting them in gear will pop the pressure plates loose too. Of course you need a clear path when you do that, are as you say, might have to go put new door there where there wasn't one before.
You described how things go for me very well lol. I'm not a fan of starting stuff in gear. I usually run something important over lol 😆.
I love old machines
29:42 I got one hell of a bunch of seals making one hell of a racket and flapping their flippers!
This old machine looks like the inspiration for the modern Bobcat cheers from OZ
That's a cool piece of machinery! Sounds like an old Sherman tank.
Yes it does!. Check back in a few months, and you may see a sherman tank here on my channel!
You got a real Gem with the old loader, runs like a top , she’s a little small to lift the heavy engine but did a good job giving her a push, you did a good job getting her into place looks good sitting out front of the shop like that 👍love all your videos keep them coming mate ! Thanks from Down Under 🦘🦘
Thank you!
Very interesting. 🇬🇧👍
Thank you!
Watch that mouse run when he finally gets it started 14:36
Good job bro 👍🏻
Thank you!
What a beast!!
For sure!
Beauty full old machine 👍👍👍
Sure is!
what a weird cool little tractor. i enjoy the variety of stuff on your channel ! you and me would get along good. i’ve got to much variety on my channel, the algorithm doesn’t know what to do with me😂 good job.
I'll have to check your channel out!
Make yourself a backup generator with her, hahaha.
I'm an engine lover and new viewer of your channel. keep doing what you're doing... although I must admit that I would like to see a more finished (restored) product in addition to getting these old machines running again.
I'm down in the back today, so thanks for giving me a project to watch when I can't work on my own. I always enjoy your videos
Thank you!
Good way to grade the driveway 😂
It's definitely good for that! 😆
Heck of a machine. I'd need a ladder to get in and out though. 😂
It's not the easiest thing to get in!
Gotta love old iron! It doesn't die.
Got that right!
Goodlooking old hough
Thank you!
WAuv good sound 👍
Had a friend who had a smaller version of the Hough was from a steel mill ! nice iron!
Had an old Herc in a very old boat. It was a slugger with lots of torque but not a great top end. A good memory though.
They definitely don't have much of a RPM range!
Great stuff, looking forward to seeing the big old engine Getty Ng some live
Hopefully this summer!
Dead plug or plug lead as it seems to have that 5 cylinder noise. Maybe a stuck valve. Great machine.
I would suspect it has some ignition issues still. I'm going to do a tune up on the ol girl.
That went WAY better then I thought it would
That makes 2 of us lol
That shifted the mouse! 😂😂
14:39 a mouse ran out from the bucket to under the tree, Top left of screen
Can’t wait to see that big engine running again!!!!
That makes 2 of us!
That’s one heavy piece of iron 👍👍👍🇺🇸🇺🇸
Definitely has some gravity in it!
Great job 👍
Thank you!
Bet that clutch is shiny now!
Definitely didn't do it any favors lol
Its sounds amazing
Thank you!
Nice work! But that payloader looks like a death trap.
That is a understatement!
Love these old 1950's loading shovels and the evolution of them....Over here in UK companies like Bray and JCB were taking 'tractor' skid units and converting them until eventually they started making their own 'chassis' that were more in line with the ideas they were trying to project. I see your has a Hercules engine, early loaders in UK mostly 99% would have had Perkins diesels.
I'll never understand why the diesel for industrial equipment took so long to catch on here in the USA. You brits had the right idea to begin with!
@@Cast_Iron_Curiosities I think we were forced to use diesel by circumstance and our diesels evolution was different...We had companies like Perkins, Gardner and Meadows that made great diesels (ran cool and huge economy for the time), but for road vehicles they didn't need 'fast' diesels and all the diesel were big heavy and slow revving. Road speeds for trucks were something like 30 Mph top speed.....a truck that could do 35 Mph was considered a sports car....Plus there was the cost, even way back then our fuels cost a hell of a lot more than yours, not just pennies more, a hell of a lot......So the economy and reliability of Diesel just made more sense for us. It was the same for Farm Tractors, by the early 60's if you wanted a gasoline powered Tractor, you would have to order it specially and pay extra for it. Light vans over 1 ton payload all went diesel, indeed Perkins were enlightened even then and offered diesel conversions for older trucks/ farm tractors, vans and cars.
@Stephen Cooper thanks for your reply. It's amazing how local geography can affect how things progress!

Man would I love you to be my neighbor cause you could clear my lot so easy in a few hours with that machine
Maybe after a tune up 😆
pretty neat Kevin
Thank you!
Anyone else see the mouse run out of under that thing lol!
Sure did. Lmao
Get ahold of Jonathan W, he knows it all about them engines. Nice loader btw
I believe Jonathan W is more into steam engines. This one is a gas engine. Little bit newer than what he works on! Im sure he wouldn't have a problem getting it going however!
When you go to park at again you should block that clutch pedal down so that you have no tension on a pressure plate on the desk and then it won't stick
Good idea!
The gravel pit that I worked at we had four different ones them Huff four-wheel drive in loaders they were a lot of fun to drive and I think international bought out the Hough payloader
I believe IH did buy them.
This is actually a beautiful machine. To put power steering on her should be easy. As easy as fixing that dead miss in one cylinder. If that miss was fixed she would have a whole bunch more low end torque. She can just about move herself now.
Ive ran several different Hough and Michigan 6 cyl gas loaders loading trucks and filling jaw at stone quarrys. Sounds like that one needs a new plug or wire, seems to be hitting on 5 cylinders, I know from experience that other cylinder hitting makes a hell of a difference in power
I agree. She is running, but not at 100%. I'm going to make another video on giving her a tune-up, and I've got some other jobs for her yet still!
Had an old hough like that. Mine had a TD9 international diesel in it. Plenty of power, but was useless with a bucket full of dirt. The bucket stuck out so far, it took the weight off the rear wheels and you couldn't go anywhere!
Sounds like one cylinder ain't as happy as the rest. Those are good engines, well worth fixing 👍
I'm going to definitely be giving it some more TLC soon!
@@Cast_Iron_Curiosities lol good for you! Our world is ruining out of his equipment like that. It's a shame. Good for you tho! That's a good old loader.
Well, the old girl did great. She was a little bit "Houghy" but she did ok for having been asleep for four years.
Old gal still has some guts left in her.
She does!
cool
22:30 Look Ma, what's that fellow on that yellow digger machine doing? He's grading his driveway. Awful strange thing that he's doing it with, don't ya think?
I had plenty of stares from people driving by 😆
Looks like something designed to load a top dressing air craft
Has to be late 50's. I have one the first hough loaders. It's only 4500 lbs. and has hydraulic bucket. I think its a 53 and 52 was the first year.
I did a little research on the company and was not able to find a whole lot.
Sometime later Hough turned it around, ran a driveshaft to the front end and put the drive wheels up front where they could have traction when the bucket was loaded, like a forklift. Odd that they didn't think of that from the beginning. Eventually they went to 4 wheel drive.
That big cart looks good, what engine is going on it?
It does make you wonder how they did not account for the poor steering when loaded before they actually started producing them.
I have a Hercules model T Thermoil that it going to grace that cart!
@@Cast_Iron_Curiosities A Thermoil! Looking forward to that video(s).
Like butta!
Make up sled style runners under that engine if not a trailer frame. Hydraulic jacked up / down wheels would be a trailer of sorts.
I hope to not have to move it again lol
A fine machine that should be saved , can’t be many like it left running or rusting .
A candidate for at least a mechanical restoration.
These were generally meant for stock pile work on hard ground ?
Thank you, I would assume so. It was originally bought and use by a coal mine to load trucks.
I'm in an everything you can do to bust those clutches loose. I've done it on many trucks and old tractors speak in a year before you crank it And you stick it in One of the low gears or reverse while holding the clutch pedal and you crank it should break it loose about you grinding the gears.
Was wondering if might lift it after got outa dirt.anyhow that worked slick.looks good.i have a 1961 75A .payloader.plate says tractor shovel. Runs and works as should.
I feel you may be correct. There was easily a ton of dirt stuck to the bottom.
gud work ,But giv the trator more love .
And some day i see the motor runing
I'm planning on doing another video of giving some TLC to the loader!
Just out of curiosity....why is that when someone doan old start videos they never have a good battery with them? They always spend most the video fiddling with trying get enough volts to crank the engine.
Is this for cinematic reasons? 😂
Anyone else ever noticed this?
I think most of us that do these videos are too cheap to buy a battery from the start. So we try to get the one in it going. Usually doesn't work out lol
Your RUclips channel and now your podcast has inspired me to pull out some of the engines that I've had stored out back for a very long time. One of them could be a twin to the Bessemer that you just moved. The other is a side shaft Superior. Pretty cool engine. I'm anxious for you to work on the Bessemer so I can see what I need to do to get mine going. What is a good source of parts for either of these engines?
I drove one of them when I work for the township loading gravel all the weight was on the front wheels and it was a b**** to steer in the back end would raise off the ground and you had no traction
That's been my experience too!
👍🇺🇲
That Hough is one of the most "built backwards" machines ever made ! I have run several and all loose traction when lifting ...good in the day..POS now !
Yeah, it's an oddly designed machine!
What is it a pump?
Large engine that drilled and pumped oil wells in the 20s
Definitely keep marvel mystery oil in fuel and oil that Hercules engine will run better delo 30 for engine
Great advice, thank you!
test light? multimeter?
Was just working with I had with me.
I thik the Jeep would out pull it! lol
Why intake pipe off probably big ol mouse house inside don't understand why people take shit apart then leave it then wonder why things go for 💩😂🤣😅other wise cool old loader and even better that it runs that thing just looks so awkward to run 👍👍
It was on, I took it off to get into the carb. That didn't make the final edit of the video lol
You don't need brakes.Just drop the bucket.
If u can't find'em grind'em( poor transmission )
She's had a long hard life I'm pretty sure!
That pay loader is an odd looking machine
That is for sure!
I know how to hotwire a tractor. lol.
Boy, that loader sure is ugly, but it does the job
Old girl still has some life in her!
It's a German make
I could be mistaken, but I believe they are a USA product.
@@Cast_Iron_Curiosities there's one on Marty t channel and he ordered parts from Germany
Its very dangerous to start any machine while you're not in the seat. There should be a safety interlock to keep it from starting in gear but a lot of guys got run over by their own tractors doing what you did
I do not disagree with you. That's how easily we become complacent, and accidents happen. Thank you for bringing that to my attention.
Im not saying i never stood on the step of a tractor and stuck my hand in to start it. Ive never got caught but i know guys that did
@Daneen Murf Sometimes, it takes a second set of eyes to bring up the obvious. I genuinely appreciate you looking out for me!
Beside all that, thats a strange and interesting loader you have there. I never before heard of Hough or saw anything quite like it. That manual steering though !!!
That loader is terrible in every way 🥴 sorry
It's a death trap for sure.
😂
"The tire's definitely flat" , and you drive the machine anyway? Dumb!...You're driving around and cutting up the tube in the tire, or tearing the stem off of the tube, when it is easy (and cheap) to PUT AIR IN THE TIRE! (and expensive to buy a tube)... By the way, the machine would be easier to steer with air in the steering axle tires... Just sayin'...
