Technically, by the way that the U.S. Billboard rules work, they’re technically a one-hit wonder. The reason why is because _1985_ was their only Billboard hit to reach the Top 40, which constitutes it for being a successful hit; the song reached #23.
In _The Billboard Book of One-Hit Wonders,_ music journalist Wayne Jancik defines a one-hit wonder as "an act that has won a position on [the] national, pop, Top 40 record chart just once." _Billboard_ magazine defines a U.S. one-hit wonder as an "artist that cracks the top 40 on the Billboard Hot 100 and never makes it back to that position.
Now obviously, Bowling for Soup is not technically considered a one-hit wonder, as they have had other hits become famous in other countries and other Billboard charts. For example, a one-hit wonder’s “formal definition can include acts with greater success outside their lone pop hit and who are not typically considered one-hit wonders.” However, some of their other hit songs were not popular on the Billboard charts; for example _Girl All the Bad Guys Want,_ probably known as their signature song, only reached a measly #64 in the Billboard pop charts. Another hit, _Almost_ almost reached the Top 40, in which it reached #46.
Thus, that’s the reason Bowling for Soup is _VERY_ debatable. By Billboard rules, they technically are a OHW. However, because they have had other hits become famous in other countries, other Billboard genre charts, and have a catalog of music that any music listener can discover, they’re not really considered a OHW.

Also, 1985 was written Mitch Allan for his band SR-71 on their 3rd album that was released initially only in Japan, and was recorded and slightly changed a bit for Bowling for Soup in 2004.
