I found that eating a handful of seedless or seeded red/black grapes most days "cured" my asthma. I discovered this around 4 or 5 years ago and am inhaler free since then. I'm 56 and have had asthma since I was a boy. No one I have spoken to can explain this to me. Perhaps this may be linked although I never eat the seeds.
Hi Anthony, thanks for sharing and really interesting that it works. I did find a paper which said "The total extractable phenolics in grape are present at only about 10% or less in pulp, 60-70% in the seeds, and 28-35% in the skin." . So even if you don't eat the seeds you may be getting a 40% of the polyphenols.
I have been taking grape seed extract (180 mg throughout the day) and consume other supplements (pine bark extract) and foods (cacao, cinnamon, apples) that contain pcc1 for awhile. I can't say that I subjectively notice anything from pcc1 consumption.
@@ModernHealthspan I have tried the hit and run strategy with 2000 mg of fisetin in olive oil two or three times. I can't say I noticed anything subjectively from the fisetin strategy. My intuition led me not to continue with it though. I can't say I know why. I take curcumin daily which I recall is a mild senolytic in addition to the grape seed and pine bark. Some foods I consume daily contain things like quercitin and fisetin in very small amounts compared to supplement dosing, but consumption is daily and consistent. I understand that this is at odds with the mega dose hit and run strategy being utilized in the Mayo Clinic protocol. Given the immune system is our bodies own senolytic system, targeting substances and protocols that improve INKT cells and other immune cells may hold promise. Since benefit is hard to measure, and I am not even consistent with measuring my own basic biomarkers (a major mistake on my part), it's hard to know if any of these strategies are helpful or harmful.
I've heard that taking resveratrol with PCC1 mutes its effect, which is a problem for me in translating this to a personal supplement regime, since I take resveratrol. I know that the whole resveratrol/SIRT1 thing isn't believed anymore, but I take resveratrol for other positive effects it does have.
I believe you misspoke. When you discuss the mouse data at time marker 5:16 you say the mice were dosed twice weekly. However, review of the original paper said the mice were dosed once every two weeks (biweekly). I just wanted to make sure this was clear to anyone who is considering taking grape seed extract. Keep up the good work Richard!
Can't readily find what the concentration of PCC1 is in grape seed extract, so hesitant to act on this info, but it's very enticing. I'd love to swap out my handful of fisetin, quercetin, and apigenin pills for one grape seed extract pill... sigh.
Hi Ken, thanks for your comment. I also cannot find details on this. I did find some papers showing presence in grape seeds and wine but nothing on the details of grape seed extract. So at the moment I am going to keep an eye on this but I will still take quercetin and apigenin.
I found an analysis of lab quality OPC-grape seed extract that showed approximately 1/8 of the OPCs were PCC1. I cannot find that analysis now. I think most grape seed extracts you can buy are worthless.
This is good news. Have taken GSE for past two years. Was recommended by a Utuber. No idea if it works but it’s so inexpensive it’s a no brainer for me. No side effects. Good video
An interesting result. I wonder about the oral dosage of grape seed extract, given its relatively poor bioavailability when taken orally. I'd be reluctant to take an injectable product until further human research has been accomplished. Still, definitely a molecule to watch.
Hi Abraham, thanks for your comment. They seem to inject supplements in to mice in the trials (NMN is often injected) I guess it is removing one of the variable but I would agree, it would not be worth injecting. I think it is early days and needs more research but it is worth keeping an eye on.
PCC! update: One company I buy supplements from say's their GSE likely has about 6% by wt PCC1. If I converted prooperly from 20 mg per Kg ip used in mice in this tsudy it would mean about 110 -120 mg PCC1 for a ~70 kg human. So quite a lot of GSE needed assuming the 6% is a good number. Also, assuming 1 to 2 gms/day of GSE is not problematic.
One company I buy supplements from (Life Extension) replied to my question about PCC1 content of their GSE. Said that it is about 6% by wt. or about 6 mg per 100 mg. but did not provide a reference. If I did the conversion correctly to get from a dose of 20 mg per Kg ip used in the mice it would equate to about 110 mg PCC1 for a 70 Kg human. We don't have human data, and don't know the PCC1 content of the many GSE supplements. But if GSE has a good safety profile up to 2,000 mg I will likely try it 2 or 3 days every month when not taking fisetin or Q.
Hi Thanks for sharing. Yes, perhaps as the field matures and it becomes clearer what does and does not work and for who, a more consumer friendly approach would be good. Preferably with some form of advice.
This comes up if you google "how much pcc1 is in grape seed extract" between 5.5 to 12.2% According to research, the amount of PCC1 that is naturally occurring in grape seed extract is between 5.5 to 12.2%.
Hi RJA, thanks for your question. Normally where I start is somewhere like Healthline which has links to all the papers. Grape seed is here www.healthline.com/nutrition/grape-seed-extract-benefits
Hi Peter, thanks. I thought about that, and did find some papers referencing quantities of different polyphenols in grape seed (though not the extract) but did not have time to research further. If you figure it out please let us know!
This is why scientists will fail writing a paper in an English class at a junior College. The paper clearly states. "Possibly by promoting production of reactive oxygen species and mitochondrial dysfunction." In all scientific literature reactive oxygen species and mitochondrial dysfunction is not what we want. So how in the bloody hell is this beneficial by promoting such attributes? You mean to say grape seed extract hinders, stops or slows the production of mitochondrial dysfunction or removes concentrations of reactive oxygen species? Ive read 📚 so many books and articles on highly regarded scientific literature that is contradicting of the evidence or theories being supported its mind boggling. From basic anatomy physiology books to literature such as this.
Hi Richard. What brand and where do you get NMN in Hong Kong these days? I live in Hong Kong as well and there are many noises out there from the advertisements.
Hi irvin, just as a reference we order ours from the US, normally direct from the company website (we use Alive by Science) but you can also use Amazon or other sites.
Hi Matthew, thanks for the question. And, at least in terms of getting the right amount of PCC1, I don't know. I could not find how much PCC1 was in grape seed extract. For GSE itself the dose seems to be around 400mg.
Grapes has a lot of sugars and buy grapes only for the seeds it's seems to me a waste of money. I have found a supplement of grape seeds extract but I buy a lot of supplements: vit c, d3, k2 mk7, ALA nmn. At the moment I cannot buy anything else. Anyway, thank you for this information.
Hi Scott, thanks for your comment. PCC1 is not, that I am aware, available as a supplement at this point. It is interesting but this is one study. Grape seed extract is available, and may have benefits because of the high number of polyphenols, but I could not find a a clear statement on how much PCC1 it had. In the video I did calculate a potential human equivalent but there are caveats. Sometimes on the channel we talk about supplements that are available and try to be specific and sometimes we look at compounds which are earlier in the process and we do not have that information yet.
I don't understand why you won't fix your audio. I've addressed this more than once already. Your voice is very sonorous. That's not a criticism.
