Got any idea on how to get this working for live photo's taken on an iPhone? Unfortunately, photos appear to be split into a separate jpeg and mov file.
Google will not intentionally remove the loophole; at the time they sold the device, they advertised the feature as lifetime, so if they do remove it, it will open them up to being sued. Considering the legal precedent that was set through the Sony PS3 OtherOS case, they don't want that. I want to whether it changing those metadata or not. Because people like me are more curious about those kinds of data when reviewing past uploaded data in the future.
But then what if you want to keep the originals on your daily? Sync thing would always try to sync everything from the camera folder since the pixel would be wiping itself clean once the photos are on google photos.

Hi @wonk, What do you do if your pixel 1 has not enough storage? I tried to delete the video on the phone but its also being deleted on the photos.google
You can use the 'Free up space on device' option in Google Photos or just delete the photos/videos using any file manager app. /Edit, I also don't use the syncing app I just plug in a SD Card or hard drive and back up the photos
This is the best. You're great! Quick question: Resilio Sync is great at syncing immediately...but, I basically have to open Google Photos on the pixel to force the sync. Any thoughts?
Yeah android puts apps to sleep by default if youre not using them. Depending on your phone, you can set a specific app to 'dont sleep' that way you wont have to manually open photos in the pixel phone everytime.
I love you, thanks! I tried a different app before and it didn't work properly. I was so annoyed after using my pixel 3a with unlimited storage life was so easy. I recently got a 6a and just in a couple of weeks I didn't even have enough memory on my Gmail inbox! I had to delete old emails
Can I sync ONLY the DCIM/Camera folder? I dont want a bunch of folders syncing. Also, does the syncing mantain the timestamps of the media? (Lasta modified date in particular)
How do you access all your photos on your phone once you delete them? Do you just view them in Google Photos only, and are they fully accessible, but they won't be in DCIM on the phone itself?
The one thing I needed from this video is how do you create a one way sync. The pixel doesn't have that much storage and 4k videos can fill up quickly with resilio sync. How do you make it automatic such that after x period of time, the files will get deleted from your phone where you are uploading from as well as free up the space in pixel XL
Thanks for the video, also can you tell if the videos are synced to? I have pixel and iphone 12 pro max, and the videos,4k or 1080p 60 fps, from iphone wont get synced to pixel, only pictures are getting synced
After uploading to Pixel1, if I open Google photo on another phone (same regular account) to view the photos, will it still show unlimited original quality? Or is it 15G space?
Yep I’m still using it but I only use it to back up the photos from my Sony camera. Actually, the battery is basically dead, I have to keep it plugged in for it to stay on 😂 the flash memory seems okay, for now.

Did you switch to something else?
I only back up to my main account, I don’t think there’s anything to worry about. I’m not sure about adding a second account, I haven’t tried that. I’ve stopped using resilio sync, I only use this method to back up photos from my Sony camera.
can I also tranfer photos via NFC from pixel 6 to pixel 1 to take advantage of the unlimited Google photos of Pixel 1? or will transferring via nfc decrease the quality of the photos?
Google Photos itself doesn't have a folder structure so it would just show all the photos together. You would have to manually add the photos to albums etc once they're in Google Photos.
Yeah I've use this lifetime original-quality uploading feature for years, even when I upgraded phones several times. It seems Google found out this loophole now. Not sure why but even new pictures taken from my Iphone X don't count towards my 15 gb quota even a week after June 1st. These are new pictures and videos we are talking about, but everything is the same as before. I have an update for Google Photos in App Store, it may contain the new ULA for it and updating might be the agreement Google needs so I'm not updating :)) Maybe someone can try it, or do people experience the same?
What's a ULA? Sorry I have no idea. After reading your comment I am thinking about not updating a couple of iPhones. Eventually the old version of photos will force you to update though before it stops working.
The pics from my phone weren't being counted till like a few days ago. I'd say I had unlimited uploads till about 14th or 15th. Now I see them being counted even though I didn't update my app.
@@beekarinsaan yeah, it was the same for me too, only it was earlier than that and I eventually updated everything since it was already showing up against my quota 😄

This would be a set and forget kinda thing. If you only occasionally need to upload from the Pixel 1 then using 'nearby share' would be fine. Assuming the Pixel 1 supports it.
@@wonked Has anyone else come across this issue recently ? I've been using an OG pixel with resilio sync to to upload all photos and videos in original quality to google photos but have recently noticed that videos are no longer working, they never stop processing, has anyone else come up against this issue any help would be appreciated.
Hi dude, it takes me 12 hours to upload a #8 minute 4k video 📹 to Google photos 2.85Gb. I use a pixel 1 OG Is this normal or is my internet just slow? Thanks G 😎
When my pixel space is full, I can use Google photos' free up space feature to clear out the photos I've already uploaded to the pixel. But then I took a lot of photos on my main phone and I just want to sync the new photos to the pixel, but my previous photos are already cleared, so resilo sync will re-upload all the photos to the pixel, which is slow and unnecessary. How to solve it?
I only played with resilio a little bit but you can make the synced folder in your day to day phone to be "read-only". From my understanding (and from my tests) it seems like this way any device that this folder is shared with won't be able to push its changes to the main device. So if you delete the pic in your pixel 1, the change should only stay within the pixel 1. I just tested this between my phone and desktop and seems to work.
Thats the meaning of SYNC. It makes both folders the 'same'. What you can do is only copy the NEW pictures to the Sync Folder. Dont sync directly to your Camera Folder. That way you can control what pictures will be synced to Pixel.
Hey, I had an URGENT question that I could really use your help with! I currently use a RealMe X2 Pro (12/256 Variant) but as is expected, with all those HD Photos and videos, storage is coming to an abrupt crunch. I was giving a sincere thought to buying this Phone, and I'm getting it at a good price (At Around 6,000 IN₹ / 80 US$ for a used one) as the Photo Upload Phone. It's probably gonna live in the drawer in my desk, with regular charging and stable, high speed WiFi. ( That's why we are all here, watching this video, right? ) Well, now that I've explained my situation, back to the question! I was wondering if I signed into the Pixel with my Main Google Account (the one I use in my daily driver device) and let's say the photos from my current device were synced to Pixel with Resilio Sync App, and Pixel Backed those up to the Cloud with unlimited storage, can I erase those photos from my main device (to free up storage, of course), would I be able to see the (now erased from main devices storage, and uploaded to cloud from Pixel Photos) in my current device? If you can confirm this, please do so stat! I'll be very grateful. Besides, that Pixel deal isn't going to last too much longer I'm afraid. 😅
Once the photos are backed up to Google Photos you can use the 'Free Up Space' option (Google Photos app > tap profile picture > Free up space) to remove the local files on the device (doesn't matter which phone you do it from it won't affect the backed up photos). The photos will remain in the cloud and viewable from any device. But I wouldn't rely on the Pixel 1 as a reliable solution going forward, this could stop working any moment. It might be a better idea to spend the money used to buy a Pixel 1 to pay for storage instead.
@@wonked Thank You for the Prompt Reply, I really appreciate it! And also, for your view on what I was planning. I'll keep it in mind. Well, even if things go otherwise, I can give the phone to my parents! I know I should probably buy them a new Flagship or something, but they're... Well, old, not familiar with tech at all, and most probably will be using the phone as a RUclips Viewer. And perhaps it's (surprisingly decent for a product it's age) camera might encourage them to start clicking photos as well. Hey, just need some assistance with setting up the auto-sync between an iPhone and the Pixel 1. I've got the image sync working just fine between the two devices, but the synced images do not appear on the Pixel 1's Google Photos app. It's likely because the synced images are stored in Download > Sync > [Backup folder name] > 100APPLE. The 100APPLE directory is actually hidden, but besides this fact, it seems that Google photos can't auto detect images that are nested this deeply. Any comments here?
Edit: got it working. For those interested, you'll first need to go into Settings > Advanced > disable "Simple mode" toggle on the Pixel 1, then you'll need to add the folder via a link (as shown in tutorial above). Now that you've disabled simple mode, you should be able to set the location of the synced folder to any other location you desire. I set my location to be the Downloads folder, so now Google Photos syncs the issues with no issues. And for those wondering, this method DOES work on emulated Pixel 1 devices.
Instead of sync you can use partner sharing feature in google photos , for that you have to use two google accounts , first account in the pixel and other one in the phone that you are using , link these two google accounts and you are good to go
I'm not sure if that'll achieve unlimited backups. My understanding is that the other phone would have to upload the photo to Google Photos first before it shows up on the partner account which defeats the purpose of unlimited storage.

Hi, same problem here, everything is fine with pictures while videos are uploaded but not "playable". Actually I ended up watching this video while looking for a solution... In my case, I was trying to backup from Pixel6 through Pixel3a...
Maybe I found out what the issue could be (and it's not good news...): it may depend on the codec the original video was taken with. Using the same camera/backup devices as before, I've just changed the codec of the video (i.e. H.264/AVC instead of the newer H.265/HEVC) and the whole process actually worked. The problem is that my old videos were all taken in H.265, I have no idea whether (i) Photos may just need a bit more time to be able to elaborate the new codec or (ii) the new codec actually improves in quality/storage space...

That removes the date, time, location information of the photos you transfer to a computer and then put on your Pixel 1. This is called exif info.

You can open Google Photos on the iPhone, tap your profile picture > Clear space.

Hi @wonk, What do you do if your pixel 1 has not enough storage?

Yes and yes

Great video. Are you still using the Pixel XL for backing up photos? I'd imagine the constant read/write changes would impact its life.
Yep I’m still using it but I only use it to back up the photos from my Sony camera. Actually, the battery is basically dead, I have to keep it plugged in for it to stay on 😂 the flash memory seems okay, for now.
@@wonked I'm thinking about buying a Pixel XL refurbed to use for the unlimited photo backup. Would you still recommend it? Being an 8 year old phone, I'm worried something would go wrong (battery, flash memory dies, etc).
Honestly there will always be the chance the phone will fail. For me the unlimited backup is worth the risk 😂
@@wonked Thanks! A few last questions. Can I back up the photos to multiple google accounts or is it locked to the account you use to set up the phone? Would you recommend creating a new account to backup with the Pixel XL (just in case....and your main account is unaffected)? Resilio Sync seems to have gotten some subpar reviews in recent months. Did you switch to something else?
I only back up to my main account, I don’t think there’s anything to worry about. I’m not sure about adding a second account, I haven’t tried that. I’ve stopped using resilio sync, I only use this method to back up photos from my Sony camera.

can I also tranfer photos via NFC from pixel 6 to pixel 1 to take advantage of the unlimited Google photos of Pixel 1? or will transferring via nfc decrease the quality of the photos?
how do you upload pics in folders and keeping the structure in tact...
Google Photos itself doesn't have a folder structure so it would just show all the photos together. You would have to manually add the photos to albums etc once they're in Google Photos.
Does it keep the Video resolution and size as it is?
I guess yes.. but you let me know. Thanks
It does
Yeah I've use this lifetime original-quality uploading feature for years, even when I upgraded phones several times. It seems Google found out this loophole now. I am looking at the the footnote of pixel 5a page, it says "Pixel and Pixel XL: Unlimited original quality storage of photos/videos taken with your Pixel, high quality for all other photos/videos. Requires Google Account. Data rates may apply."
So the unlimited backups not working anymore?
@@yecherchong however, I may need to verify this on my pixel one. There is no high quality option, so I don't know how the photos/videos taken by other devices will be uploaded in high quality.

If I upload photo using pixel, however i would like to view only on iPhone using the same account will it be possible ? Will the auto upload setting applied on my iPhone as well?(I just wan to view, I don’t wan my iPhone photo to be uploaded)
Yep it'll work, you just need to turn off the backup on the iPhone Google Photos app.
Not sure why but even new pictures taken from my Iphone X don't count towards my 15 gb quota even a week after June 1st. These are new pictures and videos we are talking about, but everything is the same as before. I have an update for Google Photos in App Store, it may contain the new ULA for it and updating might be the agreement Google needs so I'm not updating :))
Maybe someone can try it, or do people experience the same?
What's a ULA? Sorry I have no idea. After reading your comment I am thinking about not updating a couple of iPhones. Eventually the old version of photos will force you to update though before it stops working.

I just tested this between my phone and desktop and seems to work.
did find the solution for it? I am too facing same issue.
( That's why we are all here, watching this video, right? )
Well, now that I've explained my situation, back to the question!
(I mean my dad still uses an iPhone 4, like 13 Years after its release and his purchase. His ideology? Hey son, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Or change it.)
@@wonked I don't think that Google will ditch this method. One reason for it is: What do you think about the active Pixel 1 devices? I don't think that there is a large amount still active. There’s an option in the Google Photos app that can delete backed up photos off the device.

Okay, I have this doubt.
I've been using the Pixel 3XL for past 3 years and backing up, but for some reason i've to give away this Pixel. Currently it uploads unlimited in storage-saver quality. I plan to buy myself a new Pixel 2 or 3, so that i can continue this unlimited storage-saver quality. Will it still work on this new Pixel phone i buy.... or is the unlimited upload restricted to the Pixel 3XL i got 3 yrs back.
The unlimited storage saver quality works on any pixel from 2 to 5 i think. But only the pixel 1 can do unlimited storage with the original quality, which, in my opinion, is way better
Can i only view the uploaded photos on pixel 1? I wouldn't be able to view them on google photo on my laptop? Is thay correct? Can i use my current google accoint to set up? Or do i need a separate new account? Also if the phone dies, i lose all the pics and vids? Never able to recover those again?

I started taking some pics on my Galaxy S24, they are taking up storage on Google Photos. Whenever I snap a pic with my Pixel, it doesn't. On picture property, it says this will not count against the storage. Google Photo knows which device I used to take pictures. Am I doing something wrong? Would I need to wait until I reach my 100 GB limit to see that my pics and vids taken with my Galaxy will not take up space? Do I need to delete the pics and vids on my Google photos? @@cozyandyummy Ah I see what Eugene means now.

How are you guys handling the photos on the non-OG pixel phone where the photos are coming from? I guess you would turn off google photos back up on that phone?
There is a hidden .sync folder inside any directory to which you want to back up. That .sync folder Google Photos now detects and prohibits acknowledging it within Google Photos, so there is no more auto-backing up. I'm on a Google Pixel 4a5G with a Samsung Galaxy Note 8 (and even my laptop). No dice. Not anymore, at least. :( When I deleted the .sync "hidden" folder (had to do it from a laptop), then Google Photos immediately recognized the directory and backed it up. But as soon as I put back the hidden .sync folder, it silences Google Photos.
so is the fix to remove the hidden .sync folder or did you still have issues? oh shoot I see what you mean... it appears resilio needs that .sync file to recognize the folder it's uploading too
edit2: wait or not? i was testing and somehow my folder called Wallpapers upload. and when I place anything into that folder regardless of picture or video, it uploads just fine with the sync folder... this is giving me a headache
edit3: so apparently if you make a folder natively from the Pixel and then move the files from the folders Google photos doesn't detect, then it uploads no problem. but that kind of removes the seamlessness with that extra step
