  • This trip will certainly go down as one of my most memorable experiences in nature. Join me as I float the Fort King Paddling Trail in search of the rumored Rhesus Macaque Monkeys known to have inhabited Ocala, Florida as a result of the original Tarzan movie that was filmed in that town back in the 1930. Yes. As the story goes, some monkeys escaped captivity on the set of the film and later began to colonize. How cool is that?

If you ever do the trip again you should do the full River run it's only about 5 miles with the current. There's a great place to enjoy your picnic lunch about 2 mi down with a dock, picnic tables and a porta potty. It usually takes me about five or six hours depending on how many times I stop to swim, which is allowed once you get further down the river. It ends at Ray's wayside park where they will shuttle you back to your starting point. Always one of my favorite things to do.

I'm a brand new subscriber, and I have to say you definitely know how to put together a great mini documentary..
It does take a certain bravery to kayak a small river full of alligators..
Even if they aren't known to go after small boats, it all comes down to the mood of the gator at that particular moment..
A kayak will do very little to nothing to protect you against an aggressive large alligator..
I'll finish watching this one, and look forward to other parks you've ventured.
    Thanks man

Monkeys are not from the set of Tarzan.... They were brought there by a guy named Col. Tooy. A tourist boat owner. He released the monkeys on an island and they swam off almost instantly. I live near Silver springs and hear this Tarzan story all the time..... Just do some research and you'll see I'm correct. Not trying to be Mr Know it all ... Just trying to help! Otherwise.... Great video!

hunter6719 thanks. I don't though. this particular stint in Florida was funded by my friend I hadn't seen in 3 years. I drove there from Texas for 3 weeks. now I'm back in Austin and have started working again. so it will be quite a while before my next large scale adventure. thank you for watching.

oh, how far out did you have to go to see the monkeys?

    • @StateParkers
      @StateParkers  2 года назад

It's been a while but I would say I was floating along there for maybe an hour or an hour and a half before I looked to my right and the whole monkey family was right there in the trees. Of course I was taking my time so you could probably get to him in about 20 minutes if you tried

Actually, I believe the original Tarzan was filmed in Morgan City La. in 1917, a silent film. Just an interesting tidbit for Tarzan fans!

      Silver Springs
It was the location for filming of Tarzan the Ape Man, featuring Johnny Weissmuller. During the 1930s and early 1940s, five more of these original Tarzan movies were filmed at Silver Springs. In 1954 Creature from the Black Lagoon was filmed there.

Yes, Aquarena still has the glass bottom boats. It was inspired by the ones in Florida. Come visit & check out Spring Lake preserve for great hiking next to it too

That sure is a different world from Austin. Um, dude, I think you are going to need a bigger knife! I'd be scared to death of those gators. Cool Tarzan trivia. And yes, I do believe those monkeys were talking crap about you! Thanks for taking me along on this adventure.

Great Video. I remember as a kid going to silver springs. So sad they closed it down. There is actual ancient statues in the water there. I live about 45 minutes from the silver river and joke that I'm going to steal me a baby monkey but I have actually heard that some of them have tested positive for herpes b virus which is deadly to humans. It's really sad if that's true because these monks are so cute an such a miracle they are even here. They adapted to this area and have thrived for many years.

I don't know of a aquarena springs but there is actual footage of silver springs and glass bottom boat rides. There was a jungle adventure ride in jeeps too. There was also a water part next to it called Wild Waters that our family enjoyed for many years. My children loved it. Both of these parks are closed now. Thank you for giving a shout out to our great state of Florida. I love it here and could never see myself living anywhere else.
