First of all, really like this switch up in the camera set-up!
Always appreciate your reviews. I have been intimidated by Tolstoy for so long, but this one actually sounds pretty appealing. I really like the sound of exploring the rural Russian countryside, and love the way you mentioned the female representation as well!

Thanks! Trying out something new. I may make this my permanent filming position. We’ll see.
I think you’d really like this one and I do think it’s a really good place to start with Tolstoy. You could easily read it in a day.

@bookswithzara I'd watch you no matter what filming position, but this looks nice!
And good to hear you think it's a great starting point, appreciate you guiding me through the daunting landscape of classics hahaha

I read Silence because of your Samurai review because I already had Silence on my shelf and I didn't have Samurai. What I found fascinating is that this book feels like the other side of Shogun, showing the Portuguese missionary perspective. And it's real life Toranaga's (iaesu) grandson that's now prosecuting the faithful so brutally.
Tolstoy is brilliant! love everything he's written ❤ War and Peace and Anna K are my favourites

Totally agree with you. Gives another side to it that is really fascinating. Now you need to read Musashi, and that gives you another angle.
I will get to War and Peace one day! Can’t wait.

@@bookswithzaraI'm already on it!! I'm in chapter 2 of Mushashi, taking it slow coz it's a big one 😅 I would love to see you do a vlog for War and Peace or a dedicated video once you finish it, no pressure! But I have a feeling you're going to enjoy it a lot given your taste❤

I think Silence is an incredibly fascinating story especially for someone like me who is not religious. I love being inside the heads of people with a different worldview, and it made me more emphatic towards people who have faith, even if it’s something I don’t wholly understand as someone who don’t grow up in a religious environment. I haven’t tried Russian literature, but I will soon though. There is something about Tolstoy that makes him intimidating ngl

Yeah it really is. Belief is such a powerful thing.
The Cossacks is a really great place to start with Tolstoy. It’s short and very contained. So if you’re wanting to try Tolstoy, start there or with The Death of Ivan Ilyich. The latter is quite dark though! I really wish I had started reading Russian authors sooner but I was also a bit intimidated. I think starting slow with some of the shorter stories really helped me adapt to the different writing styles.

Oh cool, I like the new setup.
You need to check out the Fencer trilogy. I just finished the second book and its one ofthe most demented endings of any book I've read to date.

Thanks! It’s fairly middle of the list as there’s so many books of his that I want to get to first. ‘Demented’ sounds about right though 😂😂😂 let me know how you get on with the third book.

    Adding these to the list.
Silence sounds interesting, especially as someone who was raised Catholic but was an atheist by the age of 12 (I was never much of a believer anyway), so I wonder what that would be like for a priest.

I've always considered Dostoevsky intellectual while Tolstoy is more soulful. You'll just suddenly be in a small vignette filled with such beauty, in either celebration or catharsis.

I'll read The Samurai. After I read Silence I watched the Scorsese movie which is very long. It's the same story, but it focus more on the torture. There's something about this type of Christian directors, they become flagellants when they talk about their religion. It's interesting but you have to be in the mood for a film like that.
I would recommend The Whale Road by Robert Low, it's viking historical fiction, part of a series. If you like the first book keep going.
