My friend's great-grandmother died in NY at 98...But, survived a concentration camp in Gurs France - She arrived in the US with one suitcase and the clothes she stood up in. Why she was released and not killed, she has never been able to figure out. But when she told the story of her detention at the hands of the Reich, and conditions in the camps....many in NY at that time simply refused to believe her. They could not imagine that the proud nationalism of the German people, (certainly an admirable trait) - could ever have morphed in a few short years.
