It's a fantastic rehash, but it's not authentic. From the "VHS" filter switch in the beginning (why not do a proper VHS transfer), to the unnatural way that the vocals sit too far back in the mix (pop singers of the 90s were almost always pushed to the front of the mix, they were the commodity after all), it's all a good facsimile, but it's just that. There are too many nuances to any era that are impossible to authentically replicate.

The production on this is incredible. I was alive for 80s and 90s music on the radio and this hits all the perfect 90s vibes without feeling cheesy and manages to lay some 80s era vocals on top. It's like if you mashed Tears For Fears and a boy band with P. M. Dawn but it came out perfectly baked. Unbelievable work here.

I think the key is simply being an actual fan of the style of music. The reason a lot of throw back songs can feel inauthentic is because the artist just wants a quick copy. "Oooh i want to make a Nirvana sounding song" is gonna come out different than a huge fan of the grunge scene wanting to make grunge revival for example.
We used to listen to this in our Vauxhall Astra coming back from Exeter or Littlecote House or wherever it was that Fantazia had just torn the roof off. In the early morning light speeding down the well-built roads of the UK, everything felt like it was going to be okay. 30 years later, I'm a little older and no wiser, but I still hold onto that hope.
