- So I have been trying to decide if I get a travel set of pan gouache. Yes I've make palettes out of tube gouache including Nicker paint but I just find the size of the slots for paint too small for how I want to use them on the go. I looked into maybe getting the Caran d'Ache set for sketching. I love the work of Parul Arora @parularora (@justnoey on instagram) and I asked her about them as I know she has used both and Holbein seems to win. However, Holbein is not as available here as it is in Europe for some trade reasons. You can get the tube gouache many places but not these cake pan sets so I went to Ali Express. I don't really like getting art supplies through them but it was the easiest way and I'm very glad I did. Plus I also ordered some display cases and half-pans for my relaunch of my handmade watercolour. Check them out here:

And as always there's a free pdf of the swatches I do on my website:

Just click on the Holbein logo.
Happy painting!
So glad I’m watching this! A while ago I got a set of cake colours from Holbein and couldn’t figure what was the difference from yours (mine have square pans in a wooden box). Until I realized these are gouache! The ones I have are Gansai watercolour. Now I want to get these too!
Ha! Glad you figured it out. Both are wonderful. I always feel like gansai is between a watercolour and a gouache.
@@eileenreillyarts1229 I ended up getting the gouache also 🤭 the colours are different from the ga sai set to that’s the excuse I’m going with
@@coloredcarol8074 I like your way of thinking 😆
@@eileenreillyarts1229 😸🙌
Just a little now thanking you again for sharing these. I received mine this week and just swatched them, and I absolutely love it!!!! The colours are super rich and lovely, different from my gansai so very happy to get them
ありがとうございます!
とても参考になりました😊
It would have been good to see these swatches over a black line to gauge opaqueness and how do they layer?
they are very opaque as intended for a gouache. Of course they can be watered down or layered up. I plan on doing a demo video soon showing them and the gouache sticks I have and how they cover and can be used with other media. Stay tuned. And also check out my instagram feed where I use these and always put media in the comment section @eileenreillyarts
@@eileenreillyarts1229 thank you! Can’t wait for the demo!
@@hellotwinkie might be a while as I have other videos lined up in the queue!
This was my request too. I would have liked to have seen how opaque they are.
is it student grade gouache?
That I don't know for sure so I keep it as a sketchbook only. I can't find any information to say if it is or not.
@@eileenreillyarts1229 Right. I couldn't see any info about it as well. Also, is it chalky, like it stains your hand when you rub your painting? Thanks for replying 🙏
@@kimchidou I don't find them chalky at all. Very pigmented and they will not come off if you rub them. I'm actually using these more and more rather than tube Holbein gouache.
Including mixing white instead of titanium seems like an odd choice!
I thought it was a bit odd too but luckily I have other whites.
I’m thinking of replacing this for my himi gouache but i’m at dilemma whether i should choose the cakes or regular tube ones. Please give me advice if you see this comment. Is opaqueness the same as the tube gouache from holbein??
I would say that the opaqueness is similar. Obviously if you have a tube of paint you can apply it pretty thickly. But I have to admit I love the pans more than my tubes of paint. And I gave my himi gouache away altogether.
First! 😊
