    It’s a relief to see there’s some pastors in the reformed world who still preach this.

    Excellent. I've heard the passage in Romans 13 about submitting to the authorities discussed many times but it's the first time I have heard those examples from Scriptures. We all know them of course but they don't necessarily come to mind

    Romans 13:1-2Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God. Therefore whoever resists the authority resists the ordinance of God, and those who resist will bring judgment on themselves

    I love that you’re speaking to this. One question: Did David sin “against” Bathsheba or “with” her? He certainly sinned against Uriah.

    • @kinthecountry4301
      @kinthecountry4301 6 дней назад

      He sinned first against God. But consider the situation with Bathsheba. Did he ask her for a date? Or did he summon her as king? Did she know his intentions before she was face to face with the king? She probably should have rebuked him like Nathan, but let’s not kid ourselves here. She was likely seduced alone under a massive power differential and unless she was incredibly strong and brave (which is rare) she wouldn’t dare say no.

      @@kinthecountry4301 You make a lot of assumptions there and then use socialist class categories to further prove your point. The power disparity does not prove the point the way you think it does. I could as easily make certain assumptions about women that bathe on the rooftop within sight of the palace. As if she didn’t know the king would be able to see her, right? Except I wouldn’t make that assumption. Seems bad…but I can’t be sure. Also, under the law she would be required to cry out from a rape while in the city.

      Great question! I actually meant to say "with" not against here. Slip of the tongue on my part. I am sure he sinned against her too, but I did mean "with" in this context.

      Power differential is exactly what inflames the female libido. It's why powerful men have to get pretty old before they can no longer find younger women to date

    • @kinthecountry4301
      @kinthecountry4301 5 дней назад

      @@austinrothjr I didn’t make any assumptions. First of all, the power a king has over a subject isn’t a “socialist class category.” God gave kings power and authority over their people. Secondly, you need to reread the account of David and Bathsheba because you have the story wrong. David should have been out at battle with Joab (it was “the time when kings go forth to battle”) but he was at home. Bathsheba was bathing “at eveningtide” and it is not said that she was on a rooftop. When is eveningtide? Well, David was already in bed! He got up out of bed, and he went out on the rooftop, when he saw her. It appears she was bathing at a time when people would have been in bed, so she was not displaying herself, but found a reasonably private time. Verse 4 says that David sent messengers and “took her.” Clearly this was entirely David’s idea and he used his authority to cause her to come to him. Nathan’s story compares Bathsheba to a lamb - a helpless pawn, taken by force. David himself knows he deserves death for what he did, but Bathsheba is never rebuked in any way.

    Andrew Melville called James VI of Scotland 'God's silly vassal' when that king claimed to be the head of the Church of Scotland. All I will say is that the church better have a word of God reason to rebuke the state for something worthy of rebuke (Romans 13).

    Was David's sin primarily against Bathsheba? You have to read modern ideas about power dynamics and gender roles into the verse to draw that specific conclusion out of it, as many egalitarians and feminists do. Maybe you just misspoke.
    The verse doesn't give us enough information to know the level of willingness with which she played in the affair and its consequences. Bathsheba could have been on the roof naked hoping to catch King David's gaze (hypergamy). The text doesn't give us conclusive information in either direction. All we know is that David sinned WITH Bathsheba.
    David's sin was primarily against God (against you alone have I sinned (Psalm 51:4)), and additionally, against Uriah the Hittite, and against the people of his Kingdom, his family (who would bear significant consequences for his sin), and Bathsheba. He did sin against Bathsheba, that is without a doubt, but if she was a willing cobelligerent, then that changes the dynamic significantly.
    Edit: oops, looks like Pastor Everhard already addressed this farther down in the comments.

      I meant to say "against God with Bathsheba."

    • @kinthecountry4301
      @kinthecountry4301 4 дня назад

      I agree with much of what you said here. However, the comment about not knowing if Bathsheba was trying to get David’s attention is incorrect. Read the text again. It was nighttime and David was already in bed. Who would pick that time to get someone’s attention? People do things after dark that they don’t want other people to see.
      Also she wasn’t on the roof, David was.
