  • Is criticizing Israel anti-Jewish? Not necessarily. Israel-like all countries-is, and should be, subject to political criticism over its conduct. However, in many places where it is unacceptable to openly hate Jews, it is respectable to criticize the Jewish state, and so some bigots will say their problem is with Israel, when their real problem is with Jews. Here's how to tell the difference between the good faith critics and the bad faith bigots.

      Before the state was created there was a Zionist community set on returning to Palestine despite the fact that 90% of the people occupying the land were Not Jewish... there was also a strong but almost forgotten history of working class socialist Jews ( my grandparents and great grandparents were part of this). Many were part of the General Jewish Bund ( a socialist labor organization) in Eastern Europe. In my family, it was a subject that broke apart friends, neighbors, and siblings who stopped speaking o each other - and to this day 75 years later are still estranged.
      So, Is my side of the family antisemitic? No, they just weren't willing to go occupy ( and Fight) for this land at the cost of displacing and killing people to do it. Was (is) there an easy solution to the fact that the Jewish people had not had a homeland for 2000 yrs? For a people that had been persecuted and displaced time and time again for millenia?
      No.
      But the displacement and taking of homeland from over 700,000 people that had their lives and history there as well is inexcusable; the internment of a people for decades is also inexcusable; the treatment of these people as 2nd class citizens ( or less) is inexcusable. All of these things have happened to the Jewish People since ancient times, and now the state of Israel Justifies this same sort of behavior????
      Never Forget... but along with never forgetting our plight and how we have been mistreated, should come the ability to recognize SO MUCH more clearly the mistreatment of Others.
      NO ONE should dismiss the horrific acts of violence committed by Hamas. It was not in any way justified.... but given the context of the last 75 year, it was inevitable

      Problem belies in the fact that thinking for yourself could prove to be the same as fitting in, as humans in most social environments only have the basis of thinking for themselves “within the environment.” Following someone for the sake of betterment of self in one’s own description isn’t bad- but I agree. Best to be introspective before you use your own ethics and moral judgement to place a value on your truths.

      It'd be more believable that it wasn't if jewish people around the world actually denounced the terrorism conducted by Israel on Palestine. I know Palestine commits acts of terrorism against Israel too, but it's mostly retaliatory. I mean seriously you can't forcefully occupy another country's city and use their citizens as target practice and not expect there to be any retaliation.
      The problem lays whenever someone tries to speak about what's happening over there, they're instantly labelled antisemtic.
      And I find it extremely odd that neither America nor it's allies do anything to stop Israel. That's like there favourite excuse when they overthrow other governments, the war on terror. What happened to jewish people during the holocaust and other previous persecutions doesn't warrant Israel a get out of jail free card. So there's clearly something else going on why America won't touch them.

      If you read Jewish holy texts like the Torah, you'll see that its overriding concern is with the connection between the children of Israel and the land of Israel. Almost the entire plot can be summed up in one sentence: "God promised the land of Israel to Abraham, had Moses lead the people there, and helped them take it over, build the temple, and rule over it until it was invaded."

It's an obsolete term that derived from when the Romans crushed the Jewish rebellion and they renamed the region from Judea to "Syria Palestina" , a term that referenced the Philistines, the traditional enemies of the Israelites.
      During the Mandate, it was only Jews who referred to themselves as "Palestinian". The Arabs living in the Mandate completely rejected the term. They saw themselves as Arabs first and foremost. Many of them identified with Syria.

    The first core issue I have with this video is the assumption that "Genocide" mandates evidence of a decline in population due to violence.
    This couldn't be further from the truth. The perpetual growth of palestinian population is simply due to their tradition of glorifying multiple births, one of the core reasons being - seeing it as a form of resistnce.
    Please read the terms of what constitutes genocide under the Genocide Convention listed by the U.N:
    In the present Convention, genocide means any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such:
    Killing members of the group;
    Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group;
    Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part;
    Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group;
    Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group.
    The second core issue is that narrative continues as if the audience agrees that there are indeed worser nations then Israel (china/russia/etc)
    So you open with a box of facts with a momentum implying that you'd dive in deeper, but then leave the box and feature narratives that apparently holds a global consensus ...Like how the U.N is this bad organization that is signaling out Israel instead of there being a reason why it actually does that (assuming that is the case)
    The video changed from being an analysis to a subtle emotional pitch.

      @esterelina 2 года назад +4

      I understand your point about genocide here but I also disagree a little. I agree that in this video they shouldn’t have brought up the population growth argument, because genocide does not only mean killing of a group.
      At the same time, I think that supporters of Palestine should stop using the word ”genocide” alone and start talking about ”cultural genocide”. When people hear about genocide the obvious assumption is that we’re talking about a systematic murder of an ethnic group, whereas cultural genocide means specifically the systematic suppression of a group’s culture and ideas and oppressing them. I think that’s a much more accurate term to use and it would lessen confusion to use that in the Palestinian context. It would also be harder to debunk.

    Great video! I just have an important point to make.
    I would have also mentioned in the video that labelling Israel as an "apartheid state" and claiming that they are "ethnically cleansing" the Palestinians is antisemitic.
    If Israel was an apartheid state, there wouldn't be any Arabs in government or working in hospitals alongside Jews. Also, apartheid is an experience that is unique to black people in South Africa and I personally find that labelling Israel an apartheid takes away from the experience and suffering of black people in South Africa. I'm not saying that there's no discrimination in Israel whatsoever, but labelling it apartheid (aka one of the most extreme forms of discrimination) is unreasonable, untrue, and antisemitic.
    Israel is not ethnically cleansing the Palestinians. It seems that oftentimes ethnic cleansing is used interchangeably with genocide (which, as you pointed out, is completely false). Like in Sheikh Jarrah, everyone was quick to pounce on Israel and claim it was "ethnically cleansing" the area even though it's just a property dispute.
    TL,DR The I/P situation is complicated and using extreme labels like genocide, apartheid, and ethnic cleansing take all of the nuance out of the situation, and frankly they're just not true.
    I really enjoyed the video and I love this series. Keep it up!

    criticism of Israeli policies is not anti-Jewish. There are certainly things Israel can be criticized for. But DISPROPORTIONATE criticism and continued toxic vilification of Israel, such as calling for boycotts SPECIFICALLY of Israel, while there are many countries in the world who objectively deserve substantially harsher criticism than Israel - that is certainly anti-Jewish. There can be "good-faith critics" if they levy their criticism on each country in proportion to how much the country deserves the criticism. Unfairly skewed and disproportionate criticism is not in "good faith".
    Also, using terms that entirely exaggerate the situation, such as "apartheid" or "ethnic cleansing" is unfair, unreasonable and also anti-Jewish - while other countries are not being accused by the same terms, while in fact deserving of them.

Ben&Jerry's gain a big credit with their liberal and anti-Zionist customers, while they calculated he backlash from conservative and pro-Zionist customers would be much less significant. If they did the same thing in Russia or China, they would lose a huge market, and score fewer points with their customer base - since Israel is the Left's favorite scapegoat, not so much China or Russia. When have they used anti-Semitism to silence Israel's critics, pointing out that many Palestinians and many middle Eastern Muslims are anti-Semitic. They view the Middle East as Dar-Islam and persecute Christians and Jewish for not being Muslim. That's why Palestinians attacked Jewish people living in British Mandatory Palestine in the 1920s even though Jewish people did not bother them and were creating their own settlements on uninhabited land.
