Our government did a real stinky move last year with regards to packaged alcohol (cans/bottles) and increased the duty by over 10%. Duty for alcohol is charged at point of production so it affected U.K produced alcohol. Hence why some companies have lowered their products abv (Foster, Spitfire etc) to offset package goods shrinkflation or a further price hike. They also added a new rule....any packaged alcohol that's under 3.5% abv had the duty to be paid more than halved. At 3.5% and above its £21.01 and below its £9.27. So we come to Carlsberg who now produce a canned lager at 3.4% abv thus halving the duty they pay AND stull put up their prices. Thankfully these duty rules do not include draught lagers which pays the least duty of all at £8.42 per litre of alcohol. Basically its a war on drinking cheap at home.
I've noticed Sainsburys and Tesco are stocking more continental lager, hopefully it's a continuing trend. Out of these cans I'd still like to try the Polly's one..
Why do you always seem to ignore the bottled beers in Sainsburys? For a few months now they've had two really good 3.4% session ales: their own '3.4 session ipa' and Purity's 'Bunny Hop'. Recently they've started bringing in winter ales
I can only speak for myself, but I have gone off drinking craft beers these days. So many of them are tropical and citrus fruit infused and I am not too keen on them. I actually prefer the Belgian fruit beers to these. Some craft beers these days are making my foot claw the ground whilst I am drinking them. I have moved back towards traditional ales and this summer I even started enjoying lager again. I don't buy any of that "brewed under licence in the UK" horrible stuff though.

Why do they pump these beers up with shitty additives and flavourings to get a "tropical" taste when you can get a citrusy tropical tasting beer using just hops alone. Exactly, my local Waitrose always have 4 for 3 deals on bottle beers ,I got 4 bottles of organic best bitter from from a Norfolk brewery, forgot the name, but superior to this so called craft beers which are full of adjunts
I'd be curious to know whether you agree or not, Simon, but do you not think that the reason for the supermarket craft beers declining in quality etc. is partly due to the fact that you can't endlessly create novel craft beers? There can't be that much variety in the main types, just outstanding, good, okay, bad. So I don't think it's realistic to endlessly create novelty from what is essentially just types of beers! There are other angles to look at though I guess.
Supermarket craft beer is now pish. I've recently started drinking beers from Mash Gang and imo they taste way better than supermarket beers even though only 0.5% abv.
You know theres fuck all wrong with a nice decent strength hazy IPA - they dont ALL have to taste like fruit or milkshake etc i just like a nice straightforward hazy IPA!
Im really concerned about the lack of craft beers and Oktoberfest beers this year which makes me worry has the Government started putting pressure on these Supermarkets 😬😬
Oktoberfest beers have never really been in supermarkets but if you try hard enough you will find them: Booths have the full range and more festbiers and Aldi have the Paulaner Oktoberfest.
@@TrancetasticWilza You are aware Starmers new plan is to start reducing pints to thirds yeah.. I assume your also aware hes trying to ban smoking outside pubs yeah.. 🧐
Good video, Simon; your analysis was very balanced & fair. If there's a choice between these weird beers and a quality German and/or Czech beer I know which one I would go for. Incidentally, this shows the benefits of private enterprise and a free market. Quality will always win out in this situation. Those that fail to produce what the customer wants & produce high quality will go bust, which is exactly as it should be. Now compare this to the NHS - a state monopoly, where the consumer (taxpayers) have zero choice. This is why the NHS can supply rubbish, and get away with it in the long-term.
I purposely avoid IPA beers. For the same price as 4 cans of that hipstery sour juice I can get 4 pints of quality beer such as erdinger or old perculiar

Instead of craft lager section in super markets. Surely a "beers of the world" section would do better? Have things like Lowenbrau, Spaten, Augusteiner Helles, Erdinger, Budvar, Modelo, Pilsner Urquel, Sapporo, Tsingtao etc. Beers brewed in their own country. None of the Macro british brewed crap. Misleading customers. Genuinely think it would do so much better than the 'Craft beer' drivel. Craft beer doesn't excite me nor has it ever. There can't be that much variety in the main types, just outstanding, good, okay, bad. So I don't think it's realistic to endlessly create novelty from what is essentially just types of beers! There are other angles to look at though I guess.
He didn't drink the beers 👀
Supermarket craft beer is now pish. I've recently started drinking beers from Mash Gang and imo they taste way better than supermarket beers even though only 0.5% abv.
Zero lack of diversity, Asda's last drop was fab 👍
Lad, Sainsburys will give you a nectar card at customer service. You don't need to register it, it'll work straight away
whats the nectar card for?
Pollys Floret is a really good beer - worth the 3.50
You know theres fuck all wrong with a nice decent strength hazy IPA - they dont ALL have to taste like fruit or milkshake etc i just like a nice straightforward hazy IPA!
Has anyone here tried the 'Disruption is Brewing' beers, Camberley based?
I'd not bother to taste them either. Beer is a serious subject and tradition is a necessary ingredient.
Asda are great!!!
Im really concerned about the lack of craft beers and Oktoberfest beers this year which makes me worry has the Government started putting pressure on these Supermarkets 😬😬
No, they haven't.
Aldi start there October fiest 26th of September..check there what's new letter for next week. As for Lidi I have heard nothing..
@@Rob-e4fthirds 😂😂😂
Good video, Simon; your analysis was very balanced & fair. If there's a choice between these weird beers and a quality German and/or Czech beer I know which one I would go for. Incidentally, this shows the benefits of private enterprise and a free market. Quality will always win out in this situation. Those that fail to produce what the customer wants & produce high quality will go bust, which is exactly as it should be. Now compare this to the NHS - a state monopoly, where the consumer (taxpayers) have zero choice. This is why the NHS can supply rubbish, and get away with it in the long-term.
definitely think this will be sainsburys like farage into the IPAs. two finger white head, good carbonation
That's Nectar card fraud 😮
I purposely avoid IPA beers. For the same price as 4 cans of that hipstery sour juice I can get 4 pints of quality beer such as erdinger or old perculiar
They haven't quit it. But looks like they're reducing it.
I used to pray to the god that was Tiny Rebel. Colourway King I am afraid to say is sink pour. Wait for Simon's review. Wingman is a disgrace to beer. The Salt Galaxy beer is fine.
Do these gimmicky fruit beers really appeal to real beer drinkers, I'm not sure. Are they after the younger market, maybe, are they buying it, doesn't look like it, most drink lager.
I don't understand how anyone can wonder why a beer review channel would buy beers for review purposes only.
He does tell us every other time he drinks a Brewdog, Norther Monk, Vocation etc that he has finished with that type of beer and won't be doing it again. I have been watching long enough to know Simon's rants every couple of months are hot air but others will wonder I am sure.
I always think to myself at the self serve checkout, the normal costumers must be looking and thinking what fecking shite is that boy drinking?
Craft beer or cartoon beer
Far too expensive… simple 😢
Brewdog have really lost their way. From what I gather.
Lets be honest most are a aqquired taste a novice spending 14 pound for for tinnies and half weird..once bitten twice shy
Splash down is a disgrace 🤮
It's all bright colours and west coast IPAs i.e. not proper beer. Where are the bitters and milds?
What’s wrong with west coast IPA? Do you mean east coast IPA which most of these are
Always makes me laugh, East/ West Coast IPA; so the East/ West coast of USA where exporting Pale Ale to India in the 17/18th century?
@@Andy_ATB it’s kind of funny I suppose that they just ‘borrowed’ the British terms and then used their own local ingredients
@@andrewsteer8860 Same difference - a hop bomb with a cartoon on the can aimed at children.
All much and such the same where’s the real beer coming from 😢
I think I've had all of them and they were all meh not worth buying at all and there not new
Have I gotten old? Is this what the young'uns drink when they're out, out? None of those look like something I'd pick up, let alone drink. I'm really glad you're taking one for the team, I'll be interested to see what you think. Good for the channel and we'll knows, you might find a gem. I get a feeling you won't though.
If I wanted to drink a mango and passionfruit drink I've got squash in the cupboard. 😂
Agreed totally, great idea. This instead of assumptions that young adults will not look up from their phones to check what they're buying.
Brew dog Wingman is way too astringent for me.. not good and one dimensional.
You really do talk some absolute waffle
hope so, craft beers are crap
Northern Monk should rename to Northern Satanists.
Beers for the woke generation.
