Mimi seems like an absolute blast to be around, regardless discussing the topic of flutes. She lights up after having played the first model and that was endearing.

    Love Yamaha products.
    These flutes sound amazing!
Of course, the flutist , some say flautist, has outstanding tone as well.
I would definitely consider either one of the instruments demonstrated in this video.

Starting in the 1980s, Yamaha redesigned their whole line of flutes, introduced some beautiful higher end instruments, and one standout model was an extreme bargain, a well-made extruded/drawn all-silver model that was one-fourth the price (in 1988) of a similarly constructed Powell, at the time I was shopping NYC for a new flute. I tried several used Powell flutes at one dealer in NYC, and asked him "Why do you have so many?" He said people were trading them in for the new Yamaha flute.
Yamaha and several other companies completely changed the flute market from what it was in the 1960s and 70s. No longer did Gemeinhardt and Armstrong have a stranglehold on the student flute market in the US, and no longer would Powell and Haynes dominate the handmade flute market. Even in the 1960s though, people "in the know" like William Kincaid, knew that the lowly Bundy flute, by Selmer, had by far the best head joint design in a student flute.
Mimi occupies her own place in flute history, as being one of the few former child prodigies on flute, the youngest wind player to be accepted to study at the Curtis Institute, at the age of 12.
I like that Yamaha has continued to make good quality student, intermediate and advanced level flutes, but I feel a little sad for children or parents about the prices, which seem a little high comparatively. I'm also disappointed that over the years, Yamaha didn't come up with some relatively inexpensive alloy or material for flutes, like stainless steel or brass (like on their alto and bass flutes), that would be inexpensive, durable, and sound great on a student instrument. I have the Yamaha Fife, which I got for $7. It is beautifully crafted, one of the nicest instruments made out of plastic you'll ever hold. However, I don't like the wings on the lip-plate and it is more difficult to play than a piccolo. Anyway, is silver-plated nickel really the best that the industry can come up with, when here we are in nearly 2020?

Hi. I have yamaha yfl-222 flute. Wonder if you have played it? Impressed with the seal. Just needs a light touch. The older yamaha yfl 212 had the split E mechanism, but they took it off of the 221 and 222. Have you tried to play high E on the 222? Wanted to ask an expert on why yamaha did not include the split E in their manufacturing process in a somewhat high end beginners student flute. Almost all flute teachers prefer the split E mechanism. Thanks for your time and video

would never get beyond intermediate at best for cost so to be truthful I would have to play college /orchestra with that and be happy forever so , in reality you have to be good with what you have

Just received the 462H today from a yfl 222. I'm into jazz and someone suggested that I leave the plugs in when playing jazz for some reason. Got a great deal from "Chuck Levins" music out the door for $1495,00.

David B wow nice deal! You mean Chuck levin's music center in Maryland? You got a brand new 462H for $1495.00 there? Or is it pre-ownd? I also wanna upgrade it from 222 and i live nearby

@@esthekenn3146 Its brand new, plus they told me that if I purchase it before the end of January their would be no sales tax. I only paid an additional $ 37.00 for shipping and handling.I'm donating my yamaha 222 to a high school music class. Flute center of New York would'nt match that price.

A pro can play just about any instrument that is in good shape. It's not the clubs, it's the golfer.

Sometimes that isn't true... I'm a grade 7 player and I tried my beginner flute the other day which is in perfect condition but it would make the sound I needed. Once you get to a certain grade, you need to upgrade the flute to give the sort of sound you need for the pieces your playing.

Why 372h sounds more beautifully? It is more than overtones. She cheaper and less silver.

Yamaha flutes are second-rate, and they compromise artists by paying them for endorsements.
