    When living in Florida, you can't have tin buildings with tin roof and expect them to be standing after a storm. My sister has a home in Naples and her house is solid brick with a foot and half wide walls with a roof made from 6 inch steel beams and slate roof bonded to the roof. Her neighbors were talking about her and husband over built it. When the hurricane hit at 112 miles an hours and when it was all over the only house not damage was theirs, all others had to leave and no water in the house too. They also had a 10,000 kw propane generator with a 500 gallon propane tank placed underground.

    Hi Andrew. I live here in Fort Myers. We experience 9 hours of hurricane winds. I got tress down everywhere. My son lives in Naples, he said in his apartment the water was all way up to his stomach. The cars are under water. I hope everybody out there is doing well during this hurricane. Thank you for your prayers. It's going to take weeks to clean up this mess.

      I live in Maryland and I know that Fort Myers is 3 feet above sea level, didn't you know that, Jim!
      So what's up with Florida people. Many expect that prayers and faith or the lack of faith will block an 8 foot storm surge while they dwell at 3 feet above the sea. And yet, our Lord tells us that his people perished because of the lack of knowledge!

    I live in Venice, and maps show our house was about 8 miles from the eye wall. Hadn’t been a major hurricane in this area in years, and all the forecasts were for IAn to go way north. It would be accurate to say we live in an “always prepared” mode. Always a couple cases of water and TP on hand. Lots of non perishable food. House has solar power with Powerwall backup. Hurricane shutters take a couple hours to put up. We had about $1000 damage, and never lost power, even though the neighborhood lost power from Wed to Sunday. Because we were ready, we were able to help neighbors get shutters up, (and down following). We had hurricane winds from 3 pm until about 11 pm.

    Hope ya'll fare well in that shelter.
    I personally would not even think of getting in that thing.
    After seeing what an EF5 with 318 mph winds can do at Moore, Okla in 99', I saw first hand what a bad tornado will do.
    I saw 2 engines, blown from tracks 50 yards, and they are heavy.
    Pavement ripped off the ground, some of the foundations with corners, meaning up to 4 feet were ripped out.
    My shelter is all concrete, above ground, weighs 12,000 lbs, with 12'' slab, with 6-18'' pier holes, 6 feet deep, and I still don't trust it.
    I'm putting in a below ground cellar in next year for sure, with heavy modifications to the door.

    I'd keep a small box of bags in the shelter just for that. I'd also suggest small ammo cans that seal up for any snacks, like crackers or granola bars.... Otherwise, that shelter is a beast!!!

    Very nice build buddy. Iv built one myself and iv bought 2 F5 storm shelters. One thing I have learned in the last 25 years and 3 shelters later, mine have always been built away from my home, which always made it more difficult to run and get in it in very severe conditions(or medium). You say one has 20/30 minutes during a tornado and I say no you don’t(more less to never). Very easy to prepare for a hurricane hangout, but not so pleasant if it’s tornadoes. I say all this bc you say you’re building a new home. Why in the world wouldn’t you have built that in your home as a big walk-in master closet? I have learned just how much Iv used mine with it being placed in the back yard versus people I know that have put them into their new build. They that have them inside use them everyday rather they need them or not bc they are everyday pantries or walk-in closets and waaaay more convenient to get to at the drop of the hat tornado 🌪️ action. You have done an awesome job and spared no expense, but if just one person reads this and implements into their new home plans, they won’t beat themselves up for not doing it. You’ll get way more use out of it and the convenience and peace of mind is out of this world. Doing it inside gives one a storm shelter, a vault, and a safe room all in one and as easy to get to as the bathroom with no inconvenience. It’s like saying, hey Mr. tornado or Mr. robber, would you give me a 5 minute head start to run to my safe box outside in the backyard???

    • @TKCL
      @TKCL  3 месяца назад

      This was built well before the home because we were living in a camper, we needed something ASAP. As for the 30 minute warning, that reference was for our typical tornado season in Florida. We can see the cold front line coming through well ahead of time and usually go to the shelter if it's tornado warned. Of course there's always last minute pop up tornados that give you little to no warning.

    Living in Florida most of my life I've come to hate dealing with portable generators and i swear they make them cheaper and less reliable these days. had an old 5500watt one for irma in 2017, but bought a newer 6250watt fuel injected just before the storm because when i tested the 5500 watt generator it was struggling and shutting off under full load. Lost power for 9 days from the hurricane. First 3 days we ran off the brand new fuel injected generator and it only wanted oil changed every 100hours, 71 hours into it and it locked up and died. I even had changed the oil after running it for an hour after purchase to replace the break in oil.. Then for 4 more days, on day 7 the 5500 watt generator stopped making power, but still was running.. the windings in it burned up. After the hurricane i returned the new generator for my money back and when i went to order a new generator head for the 5500 watt unit they wanted over $1500 for it, more than it was worth. So did research on home generator kits and seeing how expensive they are, i started looking into DIY and found out their is a company out that makes a dual alternator kit for my diesel pickup truck, so i installed it and installed 2 x 320amp upgraded alternators on my truck and been using it for portable power whenever we need it combined with a 5000watt pure sinewave 12v inverter. I have 2 inverters just in case 1 dies, but I've been so happy going this route over portable generator. I no longer have to deal with refilling a generator multiple times a day, no longer have to deal with something just sitting around rotting away, constant maintenance on it when i do want to use it and best of all my trucks diesel tank can power the house for an entire week almost on a full tank. I use it often when we go camping or UTV riding with friends for the weekend. I just idle my truck powering the a/c unit in my toyhauler.

    I like the video just one question because I have lived through a far share of Hurricans. Why put so much time and money into the small shelter and not put more hurricane proof on the house, example hurricane sutters or netting a propane generator on the house than the smaller generators would just be back-ups just in case.

    Dood, brilliant. Love the build, VERY smart. If i may ask. Can you shoot that piece of left over? I seen a 2x4 go through a cored concrete wall after a small tornado. So I have seen the damege. So wondering how well it would hold up against a high powered rifle round. Only thing I would recommend or consider is, a secondary exit. If debris was to blow agasint door it may prevent you from escaping. May want to consider a toilet with a external vent lol. My plans are to bury a shipping container. Mainly for hidden storage and fun. My parents are in Branford. Please pray for them.
