They've been saying for a few years now that they love the level design of souls games but hate the combat. Which hey, me too! So they wanted to combine that level design with combat a bit closer to a character action game. They name drop Ninja Gaiden a lot and I'll say in terms of mechanics this obviously looks nothing like that, but, the speed is def faster than your typical souls game.
@@jeffwolfplays0513The announce trailer kinda has some story elements to it, which was released some time ago. You should check it out if u haven’t already.
The dev director wrote in one of his weibo posts that he was inspirated and encouraged to start phantom blade 0 by black myth wukong trailers. The success of bmw has attracted Lots of money and dev to work on AAA games in China. Watch out for more AAA games pouring out from China in the next few years.
The fight choreographer/action director is Kenji Tanigaki who is train with the Hong Kong stunt team and have works with Donnie Yen many times. Dude have a great resume under his belt so S-Game hire a top tier fight choreographer.
thought there was another Chinese guy? there was an award winning Chinese director or action director, there was a mini documentary like 5 months ago where he talks about it... the guy has like 90s hk chinese movies under his belt.... cant remember the name of the guy though
Choreography is base on Chinese kung fu and martial arts.... very common in Chinese kung fu films, wushu sports .... the flexing of swords in the last part is Chinese wushu swordplay, you see those in shaolin, Wudand, Emei swordplay. Sword play is only one type, there are many more types of weapons
Well ... Wukong feels like monkey (but got map design issues), and Wuchang, while looking less pretty, got all the basics of a slow soulslike. Wukong is also at moments look way brighter due to snowy or mountainy environments with few human structures, as well as well built temples and houses, even though some are used to represent the delusions of some villains. PBZ is way more fast paced and has very few souls elements, has difficulty choices and etc so it's going to play out differently. I'll admit the environments of PBZ and Wuchang might look similar because both have pretty dark themes and feature many destroyed or burnt down villages and temples in China.
Sifu, Hellblade 2, Virtua Fighter 5 and now this... I'm really liking how cinematic and seamless combat sequences in games are becoming. The entire boss fight seemed almost choreographed to the music. Really cool!

@ well! No, no Kenshiro nor the Japanese, cause this game is inspired by Chinese Wuxia fictional story world. Style wise, the 90s Hong Kong Wuxia/kungfu movies were also the inspiration as well. For American to understand it more clearly, I believe the 2000 film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon would be a great example.
Remember this is a remake of their first game called Rainblood town of Death so we only play as Soul. If this does well we may get a remake of the second game called Rainblood City of Flame which introduce 2 other characters to the main character cast.
I love all the discordant strings and the heavy guitar in the boss' theme, since they fight you with strings. I'm so ready for another action game soundtrack to approach MGR's glorious design.
Honestly Max saying he's gonna play revengeance in preparation has me even more excited than the trailer, it's long overdue having him play that again! Game does look really impressive though, I'm curious how much of what is shown is essentially one button press for some of the lengthy animations and how locked into them you are as that will have a big effect on the enjoyment.
I love the old school Kung Fu movie references in this game! The weird jerky movement of the enemies, their glowing blue eyes , and those sound effects reminds me of films like Zu Warriors and A Chinese Ghost Story. I am so excited for this game!!
Holy crap, that movement and interaction.... I haven't felt this grin since seeing MGR for the first time. That first battle was pure asmr visually and audibly.
I don't think I've seen a game with this level of "interactivity" in its combat, where there is a give and take, a performance of sorts, actual clashing and counterplay instead of hitting a punching bag or taking turns in combat.
Okay THIS is the character action game more akin to DMC that I've been waiting for. There's so much of this that's just "what if everything was just cool af?"
Something about the difficulty option, IIRC, according to Easy Allies - when they talked with the dev at TGA and played a new build, they said there is an extreme mode - not hard (hard is available at beginning while this one MIGHT be blocked behind NG+, dev is considering) is not just more health, more damage, etc. but also like the AI learned what you bad at so they will use it more, so no more "pattern", no more of you waiting for them to use something to counter. Like in this video, Max said something about you can either dodge or parry, and it will reward you based on how good you're at it. So I guess the AI will keep track of that and use it to see which skill of the enemy that you're bad at dodging or parrying (or not that good of - like you dodge a little early/late), so the enemy will use that more.
The action design of this game is done by martial arts director Takeshi Furukawa, who also directed the martial arts for Rurouni Kenshin. He learned from Donnie Yen (Jet Li) and can be considered an inheritor of the traditional style of Hong Kong martial arts.
Every time I see this game, the vibe, the speed of the swordplay and the visuals with the main characters hat always makes me think of Vampire Hunter D!
This is so Sekiro and Nioh coded holyyyyy. The animation focus is insane, i thought it would be a scam on release cause the anims looked way too good to be true, but once i saw it in gameplay, holy shit they did it 🥹
So the game is based on their original mobile game (raining blood} storyline, so the protagonist called "Soul" is a top-of-the-top killer from the Assassin group. He was betrayed by his best friend and wife. He almost died and healed himself with forbidden tech but was poisoned, he only had 66 days left, so he decided to fulfill some things he hadn't finished. and the story starts from here, the original game is a kind of sidescroller fighting game plus a bit detective vibe. If you ever read a Chinese Wuxia novel by Gulong, you will know the style, the main protagonist starts as a very powerful guy the story is about wuxia but more like a detective novel, and you will gradually figure out what is hidden behind. The Phantom Blade and their original Raining blood series were all heavily influenced by Gulong's Wuxia novel, so all have a similar vibe. so no worries on the story side guys.
