MICH - Most of us are compassionate individuals who, also, feel for these fellow humans.(I've been an anti-poverty volunteer for 30+ years) The "dreamers" are not being "punished." Deportation of individuals, who entered or are staying illegally, is not to "punish" them; it's to honor the objective of immigration laws. A major one is to prevent over-population which is why we can NOT keep trying to take millions or tens of millions of new residents. Serious question: HOW MANY newcomers (ALL are honest; none are "terrorists" or criminals) should this single nation accept? There is limited land & water, so seriously. HOW MANY? Thank you.

Where to begin? I've no doubt Ms. Lakshmi, sincerely, cares about others. Further, I'm sure she, truly, believes that the US has "plenty to share" so we should let in EVERYONE who just wants "a better life."
Do you know, Ms. Lakshmi, that the US birthrate stabilized in the 1970's meaning that 95% of population growth now is due to mass immigration? I'm a 30+ year anti-hunger volunteer. Did you know that the US farmland, on which numerous people around the world depend, is disappearing under the development required to support all the recent immigrants at a rate that will cause US to have to cease ALL food exports in 20 years?
While your concern for children brought in illegally is laudable, are you aware the the population on whom America has "turned its back" are our veterans and victims of child abuse/domestic violence. Where do they get to go, apply for asylum and receive re-settlement benefits? 14,000 domestic violence victims are turned back into the street EVERY NIGHT because the few shelters are full. Why are their lives NOT worth saving? Why is their suffering of LESS consequence than that of a foreign born individual?
For the record, Ms. Lakshmi, when the first ancestors of most Americans arrived, they were NOT "immigrants" because there were NO national borders or immigration laws. Further, "Native Americans" ALL are descended from persons who migrated from another part of the world. However, history of what occurred 400 years ago, or longer, is not relevant to policy decisions for TODAY.
The US CAN help numerous others CREATE "a better life" in their own homelands which is the only logical way to end poverty, unless you'd like to go on record as saying this one nation can provide for a couple of BILLION new residents. Just some food for thought. Best Wishes.
